School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health, UNSW Sydney, NSW, Australia; Department of Medical Oncology, The Prince of Wales and Royal Hospital for Women, Randwick, NSW, Australia. Electronic address:

Objective: Due to limited data on homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) in older patients (≥ 70 years) with advanced stage high grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSC), we aimed to determine the rates of HRD at diagnosis in this age group.

Methods: From the Phase 3 trial VELIA the frequency of HRD and BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (PVs) was compared between younger (< 70 years) and older participants. HRD and somatic(s) BRCA1/2 pathogenic variants (PVs) were determined at diagnosis using Myriad myChoice® CDx and germline(g) BRCA1/2 PVs using Myriad BRACAnalysis CDx®.

CRISP: An Inpatient Pediatric Curriculum for Family Medicine Residents Using Clinical Reasoning and Illness Scripts.

MedEdPORTAL

March 2024

Professor, Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, and Program Director, Pediatrics Residency and Pediatrics-Anesthesiology Residency, Stanford University School of Medicine.

Article Synopsis
  • Clinical reasoning is crucial for safe patient care but often difficult to teach; the CRISP curriculum addresses this gap by incorporating illness scripts to improve learning in family medicine residents.
  • CRISP consists of four 1-hour sessions focused on common pediatric complaints, and an evaluation showed it was more preferred than traditional lectures among learners and instructors.
  • The curriculum significantly enhanced knowledge on specific pediatric issues, with pre-/posttest scores indicating marked improvements in understanding among residents (e.g., respiratory distress scores increased from 72% to 92%).

Identifying effective combination regimens is a high priority in multiple myeloma (MM), as most patients eventually become refractory to their current treatments. In this study, we investigated whether the proteasome inhibitor (PI) ixazomib could delay disease progression among patients who failed regimens containing another PI, bortezomib or carfilzomib. This phase 1/2, multicenter, open-label, nonrandomized study enrolled patients who were refractory to a previous regimen containing bortezomib or carfilzomib.

Fat Embolism Syndrome.

Nurs Clin North Am

September 2018

Neurosciences and Trauma Intensive Care Unit, John Muir Medical Center, 1601 Ygnacio Valley Road, Walnut Creek, CA 94598, USA.

Fat embolisms are fat globules that enter the circulatory system, typically through trauma, that may or may not lead to the development of fat embolism syndrome (FES), a rare and ill-defined diagnosis that can cause multiorgan failure and death. The exact mechanism of FES remains unknown, although several theories support the involvement of inflammatory response activation that contributes to characteristic clinical findings. There is no gold standard for diagnosis of FES, and treatment at this time remains primarily supportive.
