BACKGROUNDDespite an overall poor prognosis, about 15% of patients with advanced-stage tubo-ovarian high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) survive 10 or more years after standard treatment.METHODSWe evaluated the tumor microenvironment of this exceptional, understudied group using a large international cohort enriched for long-term survivors (LTS; 10+ years; n = 374) compared with mid-term (MTS; 5-7.99 years; n = 433) and short-term survivors (STS; 2-4.

Background And Aim: Hepatic steatosis (HS) is common worldwide, but there is little data on the prevalence of HS in Pacific Islanders (PIs) and Asians within the United States. Our aim was to compare prevalence of HS in obese 18-50-year-olds of Asian and PI ethnicity who underwent computerized tomography (CT).
Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of all members of an integrated healthcare system who self-identified as Asian or PI, were between the ages of 18 and 50 years, had a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30, and underwent a CT scan that included the liver during 2021, resulting in 748 subjects.

Castleman disease (CD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder with multiple subtypes. Thrombocytopenia, anasarca, fever, reticulin fibrosis or renal insufficiency, and organomegaly (TAFRO) syndrome can occur in the context of CD. The study evaluated worldwide public awareness of CD and TAFRO syndrome using Google Trends data between 2015 and 2021.

The vulnerability of older adults to bacterial infections has been associated with age-related changes in neutrophils. We analyzed the consequences of aging on calcium (Ca) mobilization and TRPM2 and CRAC channels expression in human neutrophils. The percentages of granulocytes, mature neutrophils, and neutrophil precursors were equivalent between young and older adults.

Introduction: As planned home births increase, emerging evidence on the perinatal outcomes of newborns who were planned hospital births versus planned home births has been inconsistent, and a growing number of states have attempted to legislate community births. We sought to determine whether an association exists between neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), a complication of ischemic birth injury, and planned location of birth.
Methods: A case-control study design was used to compare data from neonates with HIE obtained from electronic health records at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children in Honolulu, Hawaii, with data from neonates without HIE obtained from Hawaii state birth certificate data.

There are numerous barriers to achieving effective intraocular drug administration, including the mucus layer protecting the ocular surface. For this reason, antibiotic eye drops must be used multiple times per day to prevent and treat ocular infections. Frequent eye drop use is inconvenient for patients, and lack of adherence to prescribed dosing regimens limits treatment efficacy and contributes to antibiotic resistance.

Professional killer cells include Natural Killer (NK) cells and CD8+ Cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs), which represent some of the most effective immune defense mechanisms against cancer cells. Recent evidence supports the role of EVs released by NK cells and CTLs in killing cancer cells, paving the road to a possible therapeutic role for such EVs.

Peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase 2 (PTRH2; Bit-1; Bit1) is an underappreciated regulator of adhesion signals and Bcl2 expression. Its key roles in muscle differentiation and integrin-mediated signaling are central to the pathology of a recently identified patient syndrome caused by a cluster of Ptrh2 gene mutations. These loss-of-function mutations were identified in patients presenting with severe deleterious phenotypes of the skeletal muscle, endocrine, and nervous systems resulting in a syndrome called Infantile-onset Multisystem Nervous, Endocrine, and Pancreatic Disease (IMNEPD).

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide. AFLD is a broad term for both non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL), which describes simple fatty liver without inflammation, and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the more severe phenotype with hepatocellular inflammation. The population of Hawai'i is particularly vulnerable to the NAFLD and obesity epidemics due to its large proportions of high-risk ethnic minorities exposed to varying degrees of westernization.

The aim of this study was using a temporary collagen punctal plug as a pre-test before decision of permanent punctal closure or long-term plug use for patients with dry eye disease (DED) and primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). This case-control study was conducted at a single office in Honolulu, Hawaii from January 2017 to August 2018. In the case group, a temporary collagen plug was used in 33 eyes of 33 patients with DED and POAG who were receiving glaucoma medications with good control.

Objectives: To investigate the utilization trends and predictors of PC referral in STEMI-CS.
Methods: Nationwide inpatient sample from 2005-2014 was queried to identify patients with STEMI-CS of age ≥18.
Background Previously, Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program researchers reported that occupational exposure to pesticides was significantly associated with total mortality. The current study examines occupational exposure to pesticides in relation to incident cardiovascular disease, defined as coronary heart disease or cerebrovascular accident. Methods and Results With the Occupational Safety Health Administration exposure scale used as an estimate of exposure, statistical analyses were performed on a cohort of 7557 Japanese-American men from the Kuakini Honolulu Heart Program.

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate frequency, type, and cost of gastrostomy tube (GT) versus gastrojejunostomy tube (GJT) complications in children presenting to the emergency department (ED).
Methods: Patients were selected by electronic health record search for International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, and procedure codes for GTs and GJTs/jejunostomy tubes. All children aged less than 18 years with GTs or GJTs placed during a 5-year period (2007-2012) at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital were identified for retrospective review.

The Kidd blood group system was discovered in 1951 and is composed of 2 antithetical antigens, Jk and Jk, along with a third high-incidence antigen, Jk3. The Jk3 antigen is expressed in all individuals except those with the rare Kidd-null phenotype. Four Kidd phenotypes are therefore possible: Jk(a+b-), Jk(a-b+), Jk(a+b+), and Jk(a-b-).
