Dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs) are aberrant protein species found in C9orf72-linked amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), two neurodegenerative diseases characterized by the cytoplasmic mislocalization and aggregation of RNA-binding proteins (RBPs). In particular, arginine (R)-rich DPRs (poly-GR and poly-PR) have been suggested to promiscuously interact with multiple cellular proteins and thereby exert high cytotoxicity. Components of the protein arginine methylation machinery have been identified as modulators of DPR toxicity and/or potential cellular interactors of R-rich DPRs; however, the molecular details and consequences of such an interaction are currently not well understood.

The southwestern tropical Pacific is a key center for the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO), which regulates global climate. This study introduces a groundbreaking 627-year coral Sr/Ca sea surface temperature reconstruction from Fiji, representing the IPO's southwestern pole. Merging this record with other Fiji and central tropical Pacific records, we reconstruct the SST gradient between the southwestern and central Pacific (SWCP), providing a reliable proxy for IPO variability from 1370 to 1997.

Objective The aim of the study was to examine real differences in the use of psychotherapy in the New Federal States during the GDR era and today. In addition, differences according to the willingness seeking psychotherapy as well as barriers in opinions and contact to the mentally ill between people from the New Federal States, the Old Federal States and people who moved from the New Federal States to the Old Federal States (internal migrants) should be recorded, taking into account generational effects (experience of the Cold War - birth before / after January 1, 1980). Methods To investigate these questions, the data from a representative survey in the New Federal States of N=2729 people as well as the data from a second online based survey of people from the New and Old Federal States as well as internal migrants with a total of N=4789 participants were evaluated.

We present a wide-reaching revamp of the generalized many-body expanded full configuration interaction (MBE-FCI) method. First, we outline how to automatize the selection of reference active spaces, whereby the inherent bias introduced through a manual identification is reduced, also within the context of traditional complete active space methods. Second, we allow for the use of compact orbital clusters as expansion objects, which works to circumvent the unfavorable scaling with the number of orbitals included in the space complementary to the reference orbitals.

Hybrid quantum systems integrate laser-cooled trapped ions and ultracold quantum gases within a single experimental configuration, offering vast potential for applications in quantum chemistry, polaron physics, quantum information processing, and quantum simulations. In this study, we introduce the development and experimental validation of an ion trap chip that incorporates a flat atomic chip trap directly beneath it. This innovative design addresses specific challenges associated with hybrid atom-ion traps by providing precisely aligned and stable components, facilitating independent adjustments of the depth of the atomic trapping potential, and positioning trapped ions.

Dihydrouridine (D), a prevalent and evolutionarily conserved base in the transcriptome, primarily resides in tRNAs and, to a lesser extent, in mRNAs. Notably, this modification is found at position 2449 in the 23S rRNA, strategically positioned near the ribosome's peptidyl transferase site. Despite the prior identification, in genome, of three dihydrouridine synthases (DUS), a set of NADPH and FMN-dependent enzymes known for introducing D in tRNAs and mRNAs, characterization of the enzyme responsible for D2449 deposition has remained elusive.

α-Aminoacetophenones are identified as promising building blocks for the synthesis of highly substituted dioxolanes. The presented strategy is founded on the build and release of molecular strain and achieves a formal transposition of a methyl group. During light irradiation, 3-phenylazetidinols are forged as reaction intermediates, which readily undergo ring opening upon the addition of electron-deficient ketones or boronic acids.

We demonstrate a new temperature record for image-current mediated sympathetic cooling of a single proton in a cryogenic Penning trap by laser-cooled ^{9}Be^{+}. An axial mode temperature of 170 mK is reached, which is a 15-fold improvement compared to the previous best value. Our cooling technique is applicable to any charged particle, so that the measurements presented here constitute a milestone toward the next generation of high-precision Penning-trap measurements with exotic particles.

Objective: We explore the idea that inhibitory self-control and prohedonic emotion regulation may be incompatible concerns.
Background: Specifically, we propose that because some forms of self-control involve denying oneself hedonic pleasures, it may lead to negative affect. Because people may then prioritize emotion regulation over self-control, negative affect may in turn lead to emotion regulation efforts, specifically the use of emotion regulation strategies, and an increased likelihood of self-control failure.

Listeners with normal audiometric thresholds show substantial variability in their ability to understand speech in noise (SiN). These individual differences have been reported to be associated with a range of auditory and cognitive abilities. The present study addresses the association between SiN processing and the individual susceptibility of short-term memory to auditory distraction (i.

The unique optical properties of graphene, with broadband absorption and ultrafast response, make it a critical component of optoelectronic and spintronic devices. Using time-resolved momentum microscopy with high data rate and high dynamic range, we report momentum-space measurements of electrons promoted to the graphene conduction band with visible light and their subsequent relaxation. We observe a pronounced nonthermal distribution of nascent photoexcited electrons with lattice pseudospin polarization in remarkable agreement with results of simple tight-binding theory.

Efficient integral screening techniques are essential for the investigation of extended molecular structures. This work presents a critical assessment of well-established approximate screening techniques and extends them for integrals over London atomic orbitals, which are required in the presence of strong, external magnetic fields. Through the examination of helium clusters in such extreme environments, we demonstrate that seemingly straightforward extensions of field-free screening techniques as proposed in the recent literature can lead to significant errors.

In this work we report the synthesis, structural characterization and magnetic properties of a family of butterfly complexes {CrLn} with Ln = Tb (4), Ho (5), Er (6), Tm (7) and Yb (8), extending the family of previously reported isostructural compounds with Gd (1), Dy (2) and Y (3). As in 1 and 2, an anti-ferromagnetic Cr(III)-Ln(III) exchange interaction is found. For oblate ions 4 and 5, SMM behavior with a purely Orbach relaxation mechanism is observed with thermal barriers of 38 cm (4) and 32 cm (5).

Flower colour is an important mediator of plant-pollinator interactions. While the reflectance of light from the flower surface and background are governed by physical properties, the perceptual interpretation of such information is generated by complex multilayered visual processing. Should quantitative modelling of flower signals strive for repeatable consistency enabled by parameter simplification, or should modelling reflect the dynamic way in which bees are known to process signals? We discuss why colour is an interpretation of spectral information by the brain of an animal.

It is often argued that anisogamy causes alternative reproductive tactics (ARTs) to be more common in males than females. We challenge this view by pointing out logical flaws in the argument. We then review recent work on the diversity of female ARTs, listing several understudied types such as solitary versus communal breeding and facultative parthenogenesis.
