Scrambling Transition in a Radiative Random Unitary Circuit.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2023

Department of Physics, University of California, Berkeley, California 94720, USA.

We study quantum information scrambling in a random unitary circuit that exchanges qubits with an environment at a rate p. As a result, initially localized quantum information not only spreads within the system, but also spills into the environment. Using the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) to characterize scrambling, we find a nonequilibrium phase transition in the directed percolation universality class at a critical swap rate p_{c}: for pp_{c} the OTOC fails to percolate within the system and vanishes uniformly within a finite timescale, indicating that all local operators are rapidly swapped into the environment.

Tricuspid valve disease and cardiac implantable electronic devices.

Eur Heart J

February 2024

Department of Cardiology, University of Rennes, CHU Rennes, lTSI-UMR1099, Rennes F-35000, France.

The role of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED)-related tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is increasingly recognized as an independent clinical entity. Hence, interventional TR treatment options continuously evolve, surgical risk assessment and peri-operative care improve the management of CIED-related TR, and the role of lead extraction is of high interest. Furthermore, novel surgical and interventional tricuspid valve treatment options are increasingly applied to patients suffering from TR associated with or related to CIEDs.

Pediatric Normal Tissue Effects in the Clinic (PENTEC) is an international multidisciplinary effort that aims to summarize normal-tissue toxicity risks based on published dose-volume data from studies of children and adolescents treated with radiation therapy (RT) for cancer. With recognition that children are uniquely vulnerable to treatment-related toxic effects, our mission and challenge was to assemble our group of physicians (radiation and pediatric oncologists, subspecialists), physicists with clinical and modeling expertise, epidemiologists, and other scientists to develop evidence-based radiation dosimetric guidelines, as affected by developmental status and other factors (eg, other cancer therapies and host factors). These quantitative toxicity risk estimates could serve to inform RT planning and thereby improve outcomes.

Determination of Spin-Parity Quantum Numbers for the Narrow Structure near the pΛ[over ¯] Threshold in e^{+}e^{-}→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯]+c.c.

Phys Rev Lett

October 2023

State Key Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics, Beijing 100049, Hefei 230026, People's Republic of China.

A narrow structure in the pΛ[over ¯] system near the mass threshold, named as X(2085), is observed in the process e^{+}e^{-}→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯] with a statistical significance greater than 20σ. Its spin and parity are determined for the first time to be J^{P}=1^{+} in an amplitude analysis, with a statistical significance greater than 5σ over other quantum numbers (0^{-},1^{-} and 2^{+}). The pole positions of X(2085) are measured to be M_{pole}=(2084_{-2}^{+4}±9)  MeV and Γ_{pole}=(58_{-3}^{+4}±25)  MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic.

Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) originating from the central nervous system (CNS) can enter the blood stream and carry molecules characteristic of disease states. Therefore, circulating CNS-derived EVs have the potential to serve as liquid-biopsy markers for early diagnosis and follow-up of neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors. Monitoring and profiling of CNS-derived EVs using multiparametric analysis would be a major advance for biomarker as well as basic research.

Somatic Symptom Disorder and Health Anxiety: Assessment and Management.

Neurol Clin

November 2023

Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy, Philipps-University Marburg, Gutenbergstraße 18, 35032 Marburg, Germany.

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) Somatic Symptom Disorder (SSD) and Illness Anxiety Disorder (IAD) replaced the diagnostic entities of the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) somatoform disorders and hypochondriasis. SSD turns away from specifying the presence or absence of a medical condition for presented symptoms and instead focuses on excessive symptom-related affects, cognitions, and behaviors. People with pathological health anxiety can be diagnosed with SSD or IAD, depending on the intensity of accompanying somatic symptoms.

Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from benign steatosis to cirrhosis. A key event in the pathophysiology of MAFLD is the development of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can potentially lead to fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, but the triggers of MAFLD-associated inflammation are not well understood. We have observed that lipid accumulation in hepatocytes induces expression of ligands specific to the activating immune receptor NKG2D.

One Step Closer to the Understanding of the Relationship IDR-LCR-Structure.

Genes (Basel)

August 2023

Institute of Organismic and Molecular Evolution, Faculty of Biology, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, 55128 Mainz, Germany.

Intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) in protein sequences are emerging as functionally important elements for interaction and regulation. While being generally flexible, we previously showed, by observation of experimentally obtained structures, that they contain regions of reduced sequence complexity that have an increased propensity to form structure. Here we expand the universe of cases taking advantage of structural predictions by AlphaFold.

Article Synopsis
  • The research focuses on synthesizing a new oxyfluoride compound, LaBaInOF, through a low-temperature reaction involving a known oxide and a fluorinating agent, leading to the substitution of oxide ions with fluoride ions.
  • Characterization techniques revealed that the fluorination process changes the material's symmetry and structure, resulting in disorder among anions, which significantly impacts its optical properties.
  • Both the original oxide and the newly formed oxyfluoride are shown to be effective for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, demonstrating that altering anion composition can modify the material's photocatalytic performance.
