Article Synopsis
  • TMPRSS2 is an accessory protease that increases the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into cells expressing ACE2, impacting how the virus interacts with host cells during infection.
  • Experiments showed that TMPRSS2 enhances the internalization of the virus, improves early replication rates, and modifies immune responses, depending on the virus variant.
  • The study reveals that TMPRSS2 not only affects viral uptake and replication but also leads to increased cell death and drives the evolution of viral mutations, linking these processes to the effectiveness of the host's immune response.

Cellular senescence, a major driver of aging, can be stimulated by DNA damage, and is counteracted by the DNA repair machinery. Here we show that in p16INK4a-deficient cells, senescence induction by the environmental genotoxin B[a]P or ionizing radiation (IR) completely depends on p21CIP1. Immunoprecipitation-based mass spectrometry interactomics data revealed that during senescence induction and maintenance, p21CIP1 specifically inhibits CDK4 and thereby activates the DREAM complex.

Mean-field models are a class of models used in computational neuroscience to study the behavior of large populations of neurons. These models are based on the idea of representing the activity of a large number of neurons as the average behavior of mean-field variables. This abstraction allows the study of large-scale neural dynamics in a computationally efficient and mathematically tractable manner.

Scalable Approach to Molecular Motor-Polymer Conjugates for Light-Driven Artificial Muscles.

Adv Mater

July 2024

Life-Like Materials and Systems, Department of Chemistry, University of Mainz, Duesbergweg 10-14, 55128, Mainz, Germany.

The integration of molecular machines and motors into materials represents a promising avenue for creating dynamic and functional molecular systems, with potential applications in soft robotics or reconfigurable biomaterials. However, the development of truly scalable and controllable approaches for incorporating molecular motors into polymeric matrices has remained a challenge. Here, it is shown that light-driven molecular motors with sensitive photo-isomerizable double bonds can be converted into initiators for Cu-mediated controlled/living radical polymerization enabling the synthesis of star-shaped motor-polymer conjugates.
