In Situ Monitoring of Mechanofluorescence in Polymeric Nanofibers.

Macromol Rapid Commun

December 2024

Department of Chemistry "Giacomo Ciamician", University of Bologna, Via Selmi 2, Bologna, 40126, Italy.

Mechanofluorescent polymers represent a promising class of materials exhibiting fluorescence changes in response to mechanical stimuli. One approach to fabricating these polymers involves incorporating aggregachromic dyes, whose emission properties are governed by the intermolecular distance, which can, in turn, be readily altered by microstructural changes in the surrounding polymer matrix during mechanical deformation. In this study, a mechanofluorescent additive featuring excimer-forming oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) dyes (tOPV) is incorporated into electrospun polyurethane fibers, producing mats of fibers with diameters ranging from 300 to 700 nm.

The ER-resident proteins VMP1 and TMEM41B share a conserved DedA domain, which confers lipid scramblase activity. Loss of either gene results in embryonic lethality in mice and defects in autophagy and lipid droplet metabolism. To investigate their role in pluripotency and lineage specification, we generated Vmp1 and Tmem41b mutations in mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs).

Background: The concept of calcar-guided short-stem THA (ssTHA) has largely emerged over the last decade, especially in Europe, and today modern calcar-guided short stems are among the most successful primary femoral implants in terms of complications and revision rates as indicated by multiple registry data. The philosophy originally comprised an individualised reconstruction of the hip anatomy by following the calcar of the femoral neck providing bone- and soft-tissue-sparing characteristics. However, as the stem design allows either metaphyseal fixation alone or additional diaphyseal anchoring, depending on the stem alignment and indication, distinct knowledge is required regarding the implantation technique, the broad variation of positioning and fixation and its potential clinical consequences.

Antithrombin and tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) provide different anticoagulant mechanisms. Having established a potent anticoagulant role of cultured human umbilical vein endothelial cells in vessel-on-a-chip microfluidic models, we now investigated how these cells modulated thrombin generation under stasis through antithrombin and TFPI pathways. We observed that endothelial monolayers in 96 well-plates strongly delayed and suppressed the thrombin generation process induced by tissue factor, regardless of the presence of whole blood, platelet-rich plasma or platelet-free plasma.

Non-Markovian dynamics arising from the strong coupling of a system to a structured environment is essential in many applications of quantum mechanics and emerging technologies. Deriving an accurate description of general quantum dynamics including memory effects is, however, a demanding task, prohibitive to standard analytical or direct numerical approaches. We present a major release of our open source software package, OQuPy (Open Quantum System in Python), which provides several recently developed numerical methods that address this challenging task.
