Comprehensive characterization of platelets requires various functional assays and analysis techniques, including omics-disciplines, each requiring an individual aliquot of a given sample. Consequently, the sample material per assay is often highly limited rendering downscaling a prerequisite for effective sample exploitation. Blood vessel formation relies on biochemical and mechanical signals, particularly during sprouting angiogenesis when endothelial tip cells (TCs) guide sprouting through filopodia formation. The contribution of BMP receptors in defining tip-cell characteristics is poorly understood. PlomBOX: a low cost bioassay for the sensitive detection of lead in drinking water.

This paper reports the design of a biosensor for sensitive, low-cost measurement of lead in drinking water. The biosensor uses a genetically-modified strain of Escherichia coli, which serves as both signal amplifier and reporter of lead in water, measured via colour change. We developed the PlomBOX measurement platform to image this colour change and we demonstrate its capability to detect concentrations as low as the World Health Organisation upper limit for drinking water of 10 ppb.

The computation of magnetizability tensors using gauge-including atomic orbitals is discussed in the context of Cholesky decomposition (CD) for the two-electron repulsion integrals with a focus on the involved doubly differentiated integrals. Three schemes for their handling are suggested: the first exploits the density fitting (DF) aspect of Cholesky decomposition, the second uses expressions obtained by differentiating the CD expression for the unperturbed two-electron integrals, while the third addresses the issue that the first two schemes are not able to represent the doubly differentiated integrals with arbitrary accuracy. This scheme uses a separate Cholesky decomposition for the cross terms in the doubly differentiated two-electron integrals.

Methods: Using electronic records from Catalonia, we identified adults receiving mental health care from 2017-2019 with diagnoses of non-affective psychosis (NAP), bipolar disorder (BD), depressive disorder (DEP), stress-related disorders, neurotic/somatoform disorders (NSD), and substance misuse (SUB) (exposed). The outcomes assessed were SARS-CoV-2 infection, COVID-19 hospitalization, and COVID-19-related death, compared to matched individuals without these mental disorders (unexposed).

Initial clinical trials with drugs targeting epigenetic modulators - such as bromodomain and extraterminal protein (BET) inhibitors - demonstrate modest results in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). A major reason for this involves an increased transcriptional plasticity within AML, which allows cells to escape the therapeutic pressure. In this study, we investigated immediate epigenetic and transcriptional responses following BET inhibition and could demonstrate that BET inhibitor-mediated release of BRD4 from chromatin is accompanied by an acute compensatory feedback that attenuates down-regulation, or even increases expression, of specific transcriptional modules.

We investigate the electronic transport at the internal interface within a selection of metallic bilayer nanostructures using the contact-free, all-optical method of THz time-domain spectroscopy. The Ru/Co, Ru/Pt, and Ru/Al bilayer nanostructures and their individual constituent metals are studied, with Ru representing an archetypal -band metal, Co an archetypal ferromagnet, and Pt and Al archetypal heavy and light metals, respectively. The THz conductivity data were analyzed in terms of Drude and Bloch-Grüneisen models, and the interface current coefficient of the internal nanointerface was determined.
