Chemiosmosis and substrate-level phosphorylation are the 2 mechanisms employed to form the biological energy currency adenosine triphosphate (ATP). During chemiosmosis, a transmembrane electrochemical ion gradient is harnessed by a rotary ATP synthase to phosphorylate adenosine diphosphate to ATP. In microorganisms, this ion gradient is usually composed of [Formula: see text], but it can also be composed of Na Here, we show that the strictly anaerobic rumen bacterium possesses 2 ATP synthases and 2 distinct respiratory enzymes, the ferredoxin:[Formula: see text] oxidoreductase (Rnf complex) and the energy-converting hydrogenase (Ech complex).

Current metabolomics approaches utilize cellular metabolite extracts, are destructive, and require high cell numbers. We introduce here an approach that enables the monitoring of cellular metabolism at lower cell numbers by observing the consumption/production of different metabolites over several kinetic data points of up to 48 hours. Our approach does not influence cellular viability, as we optimized the cellular matrix in comparison to other materials used in a variety of in-cell NMR spectroscopy experiments.

Acetogenic bacteria are a group of strictly anaerobic bacteria that may have been first life forms on Earth since they employ an ancient pathway for CO fixation into acetyl-CoA that is coupled to the synthesis of ATP, the Wood-Ljungdahl pathway. Electrons for CO reduction are derived from oxidation of H or CO and thus, these bacteria can grow lithotrophically on gases present on early Earth. Among the organic molecules present on early Earth is acetaldehyde, a highly volatile C2 compound.

Introduction: Severe hand infection might cause severe morbidity including stiffness, contracture and possibly amputation. The purpose of this study was to analyse the current epidemiology of adult acute hand infections in a European Hand Surgery Centre and to identify risk factors for secondary surgery.
Materials And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed a cohort of 369 consecutive patients with primary infection of the hand that were admitted to our department and required operative treatment.

Aims: The examination of histological sections is still the gold standard in diagnostic pathology. Important histopathological diagnostic criteria are nuclear shapes and chromatin distribution as well as nucleus-cytoplasm relation and immunohistochemical properties of surface and intracellular proteins. The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of three-dimensional imaging of CD30+ cells in classical Hodgkin Lymphoma (cHL) in comparison to CD30+ lymphoid cells in reactive lymphoid tissues.

Background: Untreated symptomatic high-grade aortic stenosis remains a lethal disease requiring individually adapted valve replacement. High-risk surgical patients benefit from transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), but there is no uniform standard for patient selection and valve sizing and it is still unclear whether transthoracic (TTE) or transesophageal (TEE) echocardiography is superior in preprocedural aortic annulus sizing. As preprocedural sizing of the native aortic annulus diameter is crucial to outcome and survival, we report the results of a direct comparison between preprocedural sizing with TTE and TEE including subsequent outcomes in a high-risk TAVR population.

The reversible interconversion of molecular hydrogen and protons is one of the most ancient microbial metabolic reactions and catalyzed by hydrogenases. A widespread yet largely enigmatic group comprises multisubunit [NiFe] hydrogenases, that directly couple H metabolism to the electrochemical ion gradient across the membranes of bacteria and of archaea. These complexes are collectively referred to as energy-converting hydrogenases (Ech), as they reversibly transform redox energy into physicochemical energy.

Aim: To assess the prevalence and severity of periodontitis in patients with moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) and comparing the results with the self-reported periodontitis awareness of the study subjects.
Material And Methods: The periodontal status of 270 patients with moderate CKD randomly selected from a cohort of 5,217 subjects participating in the prospective observational German Chronic Kidney Disease (GCKD) project was analysed by recording bleeding on probing (BOP), probing pocket depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL). Furthermore, the awareness of the study subjects of their periodontal conditions was evaluated by a self-reported questionnaire.

Serious mandibular diseases such as tumor or osteonecrosis often require segmental or marginal mandibulectomy, the latter with improved outcome thanks to preserved mandibular continuity. Nevertheless, gradual osteolytic and/or osteosclerotic skeletal changes frequently indicate repetitive resections. Based on the fundamental adaptivity of bone to mechanical loads, the question arose whether resection-related anatomical alterations trigger relevant pathological skeletal adaptations.

Background: Evaluation of clinical long-term results 20 years after connective tissue grafting (CTG) or guided tissue regeneration (GTR) using bioabsorbable barriers for root coverage therapy.
Methods: Initially, 15 patients with 38 Miller Class I and II recession defects underwent CTG or GTR according to random assignment. At baseline, 3, 120 ± 12, and 240 ± 12 months after surgery, data on probing depth, clinical attachment level, recession depth and width, amount of keratinized tissue, and bleeding on probing were obtained.

Mitral valve surgery is being performed routinely using minimally invasive operative techniques. We aimed comparing perioperative and long-term outcomes of minimally invasive mitral valve surgery using 2 different surgical approaches, partial upper sternotomy (PUS) vs right anterolateral minithoracotomy (RAT). From January 1998 through December 2015, 1006 patients underwent mitral valve surgery using a minimally invasive access in our institution.

Damage to the critical anatomic structures during dental implant placement can lead to serious complications, including intra- or postoperative bleeding, hematoma formation, or varying degrees of neurosensory alteration. These complications usually occur when the anatomic features of the major blood vessels and their anastomoses, neurovascular bundles, and alveolar ridge contour are not properly investigated prior to the surgery. Therefore, having proper knowledge of specific anatomic factors is key to avoiding intra- and postsurgical complications.

Histopathological methods based on 2 μm thin sections are routinely used in pathological anatomical diagnosis. Many medical disciplines already rely on a 3D representation, regarding visualization and imaging techniques. Pathology in particular uses different tissue visualizations to make the final diagnosis.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is recognized as a factor of morbidity and mortality in trauma patients suffering from severe blunt traumatic brain injury (TBI). The administration of pharmacological prophylaxis is broadly accepted as an effective therapy to prevent VTE events in trauma patients. Regardless of its ascertained efficacy, the risk of hematoma progression complicates the therapy in patients suffering from TBI: therefore, the optimal time to start prophylactic anticoagulation in these patients remains controversial.

Rising global temperatures force many species to shift their distribution ranges. However, whether or not (and how fast) such range shifts occur depends on species' dispersal capacities. In most ecological studies, dispersal-related traits (such as the wing size or wing loading in insects) are treated as fixed, species-specific characteristics, ignoring the important role of phenotypic plasticity during insect development.

The limited sodium availability of freshwater and terrestrial environments was a major physiological challenge during vertebrate evolution. The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is present in the apical membrane of sodium-absorbing vertebrate epithelia and evolved as part of a machinery for efficient sodium conservation. ENaC belongs to the degenerin/ENaC protein family and is the only member that opens without an external stimulus.
