Background: Treatment of stimulant offenders in Japan is an urgent issue. One of the more recent support approaches for stimulant offenders in Japan is to understand and support them based on a self-medication hypothesis; however, the effect of trust on substance abuse severity among incarcerated stimulant offenders has not been examined. Additionally, while accounting for gender differences is essential when providing support for them, these differences have not also been examined.

Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia to treat major depressive disorder with comorbid insomnia: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Objective: Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) has demonstrated efficacy for both insomnia and depression. With a tenfold increase in expected participant numbers, we aimed to update the systematic review and meta-analysis of CBT-I for major depressive disorders (MDD).

Methods: Multiple databases were searched up to March 27th 2024 to include all randomized controlled trials examining CBT-I among adults with MDD.

This study focused on explicit instruction and evaluated the differences in task performance between participants who were instructed to employ the change and those who were not. Fatiguing unilateral handgrip influences force during force-matching task with lower limb.

This study aimed to test the hypotheses that fatiguing unilateral handgrip contraction exhibits different changes in corticomotor excitability, which is evaluated by motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), in the lower limbs ipsilateral and contralateral to the fatigued hand, and that the changes in corticomotor excitability estimated by MEPs in the non-fatigued lower limbs affect the force exerted based on the sense of effort. Ten healthy males completed fatiguing unilateral handgrip contraction and force-matching tasks by static dorsiflexion before, immediately after, and 10 min after handgrip contraction. MEPs in the tibialis anterior (TA) were also measured before, immediately after, and 10 min after handgrip contraction.

Attention function is thought to be important in chronic pain, with the pathology of chronic pain closely associated with cognitive-emotional components. However, there have been few neuroimaging studies of the relationship between attention function and chronic pain. We used the method of functional connectivity analysis for resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) data and the Attention Network Test-Revision (ANT-R) to clarify the attention-related pathology of chronic pain.

We reported that external dead space ventilation (EDSV) enhanced self-sustained muscle activity (SSMA) of the human soleus muscle, which is an indirect observation of plateau potentials. However, the main factor for EDSV to enhance SSMA remains unclear. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of EDSV-induced hypercapnia, hypoxia, and hyperventilation on SSMA.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between methamphetamine (MA) use and high-risk sexual behavior among newly incarcerated prisoners in Japan. We conducted a secondary analysis using cross-sectional survey data, which constituted a nationwide prison sample surveyed between July and November 2017. In total, 699 participants (462 male and 237 female prisoners), who completed the self-administered questionnaire during imprisonment were recruited for the study.

Roles of culture and COMT Val58Met gene on neural basis of executive function: A comparison between Japanese and American children.

The development of executive functions (EF) is shaped by both genetic and environmental factors, including cultural background. Genetically, variation in the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene polymorphism has been linked to EF performance and differential regulation of prefrontal cortex activity. Based on the gene-culture interaction framework, we tested whether culture would moderate the association between the COMT gene and young children's behavioral responses and neural activities during a cognitive-shifting EF task.

Gender Differences in Triggers of Stimulant Use Based on the National Survey of Prisoners in Japan.

There are a few studies on gender differences in terms of reasons and motives for methamphetamine use. To examine gender differences in triggers of methamphetamine use We provided a questionnaire survey to 699 inmates who were incarcerated because of violation of the Stimulants Control Act. The results of DAST-20 (the severity of drug dependence) moderately correlated with the applicable numbers of the 37 situational triggers and 34 emotional triggers for stimulant use, respectively.

Do shorter inter-stimulus intervals in the go/no-go task enable better assessment of response inhibition?

Young, Sutherland, and McCoy indicated that a Go/No-Go Task (GNG) becomes more difficult as the inter-stimulus intervals (ISIs) becomes shorter. However, is the number of commission errors under extremely short ISIs a useful metric for assessing response inhibition? This study challenges the assumption that a shorter ISI in the GNG enables better assessment of response inhibition. University students (N = 213) completed the GNG, the Conners Continuous Performance Test 3rd Edition (CCPT), and the Modified Stroop Task.

Are there sex differences in the development of prefrontal function during early childhood?

Research has demonstrated the possibility of minor sex differences in executive function (EF) development of young children; however, this may be limited to the measurements used in previous studies (questionnaires and cognitive tasks), which tend to be less sensitive to the detection of sex differences. The present study uses brain measures to examine the effect of sex on EF development. In this study, preschool children were given an EF task, and patterns of activation in the lateral prefrontal regions were measured by a functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

The present study investigated the effects of a sustained handgrip contraction with the right hand on motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) in task-unrelated knee extensor muscles and determined whether the effects are influenced by intensity of the handgrip contraction.

Methods: Subjects performed a 120-s sustained handgrip contraction at 10% or 50% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) using the right hand.
