The recent discovery of the large piezoelectric response of Pb(MgNb)O-PbTiO (PMN-PT) ceramics induced by samarium doping has provided a substantially improved functionality to the group of lead-based relaxor-ferroelectric materials. Different mechanisms have been so far proposed for the large piezoelectricity; however, the explanations are contradictory and focused on a unified description. Here, we use nonlinear harmonic piezoelectric measurements combined with multiscale structural analysis to clarify the origins of the ultrahigh piezoelectric response of samarium-doped PMN-PT.

Surface Modification of Copper-Based Flakes for Conductive Polymer Composites.

Polymers (Basel)

June 2024

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Aškerčeva Ulica 6, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The physical properties as well as thermal and electrical stability of copper particles can be improved by surface protection, which mainly depends on the coating material. Our study was, therefore, focused on the rheological, thermal, mechanical and electrical characterization of polymer composites by comparing uncoated (Cu), silver-coated (Cu@Ag) and silica-coated (Cu@Si) copper flakes in low-density polyethylene at various volume concentrations (up to 40%). Interactions among particles were investigated by rheological properties, as these indicate network formation (geometrical entanglement), which is important for mechanical reinforcement as well as establishing an electric pathway (electrical percolation).

Carbon deposits consisting of vertically oriented multilayer graphene sheets on metallic foils represent an interesting alternative to activated carbon in electrical and electrochemical devices such as super-capacitors because of the superior electrical conductivity of graphene and huge surface-mass ratio. The graphene sheets were deposited on cobalt foils by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition using propane as the carbon precursor. Plasma was sustained by an inductively coupled radiofrequency discharge in the H mode at a power of 500 W and a propane pressure of 17 Pa.

Article Synopsis
  • Air pollution is linked to higher risks of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, which affect memory and cognitive functions.
  • Traditional models of sporadic Alzheimer's fail to capture all disease features, highlighting the need for new models driven by environmental factors.
  • Research using live-cell imaging in SH-SY5Y cells shows that exposure to certain pollutants, like iron oxide and diesel particles, leads to neurodegenerative symptoms, while engineered cerium oxide nanoparticles do not have the same damaging effects.

Radiocarbon (ΔC) was measured for four years (2019-2022) in Zagreb (Croatia) and in Cvetković village near Jastrebarsko (Zagreb County, Croatia) to see whether there are differences between the city site and the rural one because of the fossil fuel combustion. The δC was measured as grab samples once in a month in period December 2020-November 2022. The bomb-produced C has been globally distributed across the planet, but the combustion of fossil fuels that do not contain C causes a local effect of lowering ΔC.

Integrable systems offer rare examples of solvable many-body problems in the quantum world. Because of the fine-tuned structure, their realization in nature and experiment is never completely accurate, and therefore effects of integrability are observed only transiently. One way to overcome this limitation is to weakly couple nearly integrable systems to baths and driving: this will stabilize integrable effects up to arbitrary time and encode them in the stationary state approximated by a generalized Gibbs ensemble.

A combination of searches for a new resonance decaying into a Higgs boson pair is presented, using up to 139  fb^{-1} of pp collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The combination includes searches performed in three decay channels: bb[over ¯]bb[over ¯], bb[over ¯]τ^{+}τ^{-}, and bb[over ¯]γγ. No excess above the expected Standard Model background is observed and upper limits are set at the 95% confidence level on the production cross section of Higgs boson pairs originating from the decay of a narrow scalar resonance with mass in the range 251 GeV-5 TeV.

Unlabelled: Rutile inclusions in almandine-spessartine garnet from a peraluminous pegmatoid from the Moldanubian zone (Bohemian Massif, AT) show distinct changes in aspect ratio, shape preferred orientations (SPO) and crystallographic orientation relationships (COR) along the transition between microstructurally different growth zones in the garnet core and rim. For identification of the COR characteristics we pool specific CORs based on their common axial relationship into three COR groups: Group 103/111, Group 001/111 and Group 001/100. The rutile inclusions in the garnet core domains are elongated along the four Grt 111 directions and are dominated by COR Group 103/111.

The recycling of NdFeB magnets is necessary to ensure a reliable and ethical supply of rare earth elements as critical raw materials. This has been recognized internationally, prompting the implementation of large-scale legislative measured aimed at its resolution; for example, an ambitious recycling quote has been established in the Critical Raw Materials Act Successful recycling in sufficient quantities is challenged by product designs that do not allow the extraction and recycling of these high-performance permanent magnets without excessive effort and cost. This is particularly true for smaller motors using NdFeB magnets.

Exploring potential energy surfaces to reach saddle points above convex regions.

J Chem Phys

June 2024

LAAS-CNRS, Université de Toulouse, CNRS, 7 Avenue Du Colonel Roche, 31000 Toulouse, France.

Saddle points on high-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PES) play a determining role in the activated dynamics of molecules and materials. Building on approaches dating back more than 50 years, many open-ended transition-state search methods have been developed to follow the direction of negative curvature from a local minimum to an adjacent first-order saddle point. Despite the mathematical justification, these methods can display a high failure rate: using small deformation steps, up to 80% of the explorations can end up in a convex region of the PES, where all directions of negative curvature vanish, while if the deformation is aggressive, a similar fraction of attempts lead to saddle points that are not directly connected to the initial minimum.

Higgsinos with masses near the electroweak scale can solve the hierarchy problem and provide a dark matter candidate, while detecting them at the LHC remains challenging if their mass splitting is O(1  GeV). This Letter presents a novel search for nearly mass-degenerate Higgsinos in events with an energetic jet, missing transverse momentum, and a low-momentum track with a significant transverse impact parameter using 140  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment. For the first time since LEP, a range of mass splittings between the lightest charged and neutral Higgsinos from 0.
