Introduction: Based on the schema theory advanced by Rumelhart and Norman, we shed light on the individual variability in brain dynamics induced by hybridization of learning methodologies, particularly alternating unsupervised learning and supervised learning in language acquisition. The concept of "schema" implies a latent knowledge structure that a learner holds and updates as intrinsic to his or her cognitive space for guiding the processing of newly arriving information.
Methods: We replicated the cognitive experiment of Onnis and Thiessen on implicit statistical learning ability in language acquisition but included additional factors of prosodic variables and explicit supervised learning.

Aim: Our aim was to examine whether serum levels of placental growth factor (PlGF) and soluble endoglin (sEng) at 19-25 and 26-31 weeks of gestation were associated with the occurrence of the 9-block categorization of placenta weight (PW) and fetal/placenta ratio (F/P ratio).
Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study in 1391 women with singleton pregnancy. Serum levels of PlGF and sEng were measured by enzyme immunosorbent assay.

Objectives In Japan, medical questionnaires on diet and lifestyle are administered during health checkups for children. Since the rate of health checkup participation is high, the information obtained from these questionnaires can be used for regional diagnoses. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between sweet snack eating habits (SSEHs) and lifestyle habits in toddlers using data from the questionnaires.

Cobalt chloride can create hypoxia-like state in vitro (referred to as chemical hypoxia). Several studies have suggested that chemical hypoxia may cause deleterious effects on myogenesis. The intrinsic underlying mechanisms of myoblast differentiation, however, are not fully understood.

Some rice bran pickles contain histamine (Him) and tyramine (Tym), which are nonvolatile amines, presumably produced by microorganisms during the fermentation process. When attempting to identify the histamine- and tyramine-producing bacteria from commercially available cucumber rice bran pickles containing Him and Tym, it was identified histamine-producing bacteria were found to be Raoultella ornithinolytica, and tyramine-producing bacteria were Lactobacillus curvatus. When those bacteria were cultured in media containing rice bran (the raw material for rice bran pickles), Him and Tym were produced.

Background: School-age children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have difficulties in interpersonal relationships, in addition to impaired facial expression perception and recognition. For successful social interactions, the ability to discriminate between familiar and unfamiliar faces is critical. However, there are no published reports on the recognition of familiar and unfamiliar faces by children with ADHD.

In this study, we examined Japanese older adults' health habits (healthy diet, exercise, and nonsmoking) using 4 models: sensitive period, pathway, social mobility, and cumulative effects. A representative cross-sectional survey of people 65 years and older, living in Tokyo, produced 739 effective respondents. Health habits in social networks over the life course, at junior high school, age 20, and age 40, were measured through retrospective recall questions.

This study aimed to investigate for the first time, the profile of Physarum microplasmodial phosphatase (PPH) activity toward the phosphorylated light chain of Physarum myosin II (PLCM) at pH 7.6, the velocity of cytoplasmic streaming, and PPH expression in spherule formation during dark starvation (DS). In this study, we cloned the full-length cDNA of PPH using polymerase chain reaction, based on the N-terminal amino acid sequence of the purified enzyme.

Aim: The difference of placental weight (PW) and fetal/placental weight ratio (F/P) Z scores by mode of delivery is unclear. To investigate such differences and the actual conditions underlying the imbalance between fetal and placental growth.
Methods: The data from Japanese database 2013 were assessed.

To demonstrate the differences in intrauterine fetal deaths and neonatal deaths between small for date (SFD) and Non-SFD neonates by applying a novel classification from both Z scores of placental weight (PW) and fetal/placental weight ratio (F/P) to small for gestational age (SGA) neonates. From 93,034 placentas/infants of mothers who vaginally delivered a singleton infant (Japan Perinatal Registry Network database 2013), SGA (n=7,780) was chosen according to the reference to Japanese neonatal growth chart. They were divided into two subgroups: SFD (body weight and height less than the 10 percentile, n=3,379) and Non-SFD (only body weight less than the 10 percentile, n=4,401).

Understanding anatomical structures and biological functions based on gene expression is critical in a systemic approach to address the complexity of the mammalian brain, where >25 000 genes are expressed in a precise manner. Co-expressed genes are thought to regulate cell type- or region-specific brain functions. Thus, well-designed data acquisition and visualization systems for profiling combinatorial gene expression in relation to anatomical structures are crucial.

Background: Health personnel must provide continuous support in response to problematic results from health checks of infants and toddlers (hereinafter "infant[s]"). Among this support, it is important for health personnel to provide nutritional guidance to families as a collaborative effort between the staff from multiple disciplines and community organizations. This study aimed to clarify the factors affecting collaboration with community organizations in providing nutritional guidance to families following health checks for infants in Japan.

Recently, various studies have clarified that humans can immediately make social evaluations from facial appearance and that such judgment have an important role in several social contexts. However, the origins and early development of this skill have not been well investigated. To clarify the mechanisms for the acquisition of this skill, we examined whether 6- to 8-month-old infants show a preference for a more trustworthy-looking person.

The content of nonvolatile amines (putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, tyramine, and spermidine) in commercial pickles and their raw materials was determined in order to investigate the origin of these amines and to evaluate possible health risks. The nonvolatile amine content varied depending on the type of pickle; histamine and tyramine contents were relatively high, namely, 6.0-264 and 2.

We have shown that pharmacological inhibition of HSP90 ATPase activity induces apoptosis of myoblasts during their differentiation. However, the signaling pathways remain not fully characterized. We report that pharmacological targeting of HSP90 with 17-AAG activates the intrinsic pathway including caspase-dependent and caspase-independent pathways.

Introduction: Effects of disparities in socioeconomic status (SES) on late-life disabilities have been reported around the world. However, there are only a few studies that have examined age, period, and cohort dependent influences of SES disparities on late-life disabilities. We investigated associations between SES disparities and late-life disability based on the Age-Period-Cohort.

An analytical method for the determination of nonvolatile amines (putrescine, cadaverine, histamine, tyramine, and spermidine) in foods was developed, using an improved dansyl derivatization technique. The five amines were extracted from food with 1% trichloroacetic acid. Three milliliter of extract was applied to a polymer-based strong cation exchange resin mini-column, which was washed with 5 mL of water, and eluted with 5 mL of 1 mol/L potassium carbonate solution.

Antioxidant activities of four kinds of Japanese traditional fermented tea, Gishi-cha, Ishizuchi-kurocha, Awa-bancha, and Batabatacha, were compared. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by three parameters: copper ion reduction ability, radical trapping ability, and oxygen consumption rate. Processes of fermentation of these fermented teas are different.

Data were obtained from a survey of residents of 30 municipalities in the Tokyo metropolitan area ( N = 1,592). The results indicated that family members living together may share ambivalent social ties, anchored in positive sentiments and serving as sources of support but where criticism and excessive demands may occur.
