Increasing evidence suggested that protein disulfide isomerase supported the survival and progression of several cancers. Nelumbinis Plumula is a Chinese traditional herb which showed antitumor activity. To find if the Nelumbinis Plumula affect protein disulfide isomerase activity, we studied its chemical constituents, and 12 monomeric compounds were isolated by means of solvent extraction, silica gel column chromatography, preparative HPLC and recrystallization.

Contagious porcine pleuropneumonia (CPP), caused by Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP), is a highly transmissible and fatal respiratory illness that causes tremendous economic losses for the pig breeding industry worldwide. Propionibacterium acnes (PA) has a strong cross-reaction with anti-APP1 and anti-APP5 serum and can efficiently prevent APP infection, which was fortuitously found in researching the differential gene between the different APP serotypes. There seems to be some natural cross-protection between PA and APP.

CD44 and EpCAM play crucial roles in intraperitoneal ovarian cancer development. In this study, we developed an RNA-based bispecific CD44-EpCAM aptamer that is capable of blocking CD44 and EpCAM simultaneously by fusing single CD44 and EpCAM aptamers with a double stranded RNA adaptor. With the aid of a panel of ovarian cancer cell lines, we found that bispecific CD44-EpCAM aptamer was much more effective than either single CD44 or EpCAM aptamer in the ability to inhibit cell growth and to induce apoptosis.

Theoretical analysis of electrochromism under redox of bis(3-thienyl)/(2-thienyl)hexafluorocyclopentene: effects of charged and substituted systems.

State Key Laboratory of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Institute of Theoretical Chemistry, Jinlin University, Changchun 130023, People's Republic of China.

Electrochromism with the ring-closing or ring-opening isomerization of substituted and unsubstituted bis(3-thienyl)/(2-thienyl)hexafluorocyclopentene is discussed using the DFT method. In the neutral ground state, bond making and breaking between two reactive C atoms on thienyls are thermodynamically forbidden. Under redox conditions, the gain or loss of electrons can have a significant effect on the frontier molecular orbital distribution of both open- and closed-ring isomers, particularly in reactive sites.

BACKGROUND Because of the shortage of grafts, many attempts have been made to treat calculi in donor kidneys and have achieved successful management. This case report is the first to present removal of stones from bilateral kidneys from a single donor through flexible ureteroscopy before transplantation. CASE REPORT The present case report shows the clinical management of bilateral donor kidneys with calculi, which were taken from a 33-year-old man through donation after cardiac death (DCD).

Sprouty (Spry) proteins have been implicated in cancer progression, but their role in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a subtype of lethal and aggressive breast cancer, is unknown. Here, we reported that Spry1 is significantly expressed in TNBC specimen and MDA-MB-231 cells. To understand Spry1 regulation of signaling events controlling breast cancer phenotype, we used lentiviral delivery of human Spry1 shRNAs to suppress Spry1 expression in MDA-MB-231, an established TNBC cell line.

As a novel oral drug delivery system, proliposome was applied to improve the solubility of active components of Ginkgo biloba extract (GbE). There are currently few reports focusing on the pharmacokinetic characteristics of proliposome of GbE (GbP). A rapid and sensitive ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method for the simultaneous quantification of active components of GbP and a commercial tablet product (Ginaton) in rat plasma was developed and successfully validated.

Spermatogenesis is an essential reproductive process that is regulated by many Y chromosome specific genes. Most of these genes are located in a specific region known as the azoospermia factor region (AZF) in the long arm of the human Y chromosome. AZF microdeletions are recognized as the most frequent structural chromosomal abnormalities and are the major cause of male infertility.

The reconstruction of large bone defects has been the focus in bone tissue engineering research. By acting as synthetic frameworks for cell growth and tissue formation, biomaterials can play a critical role in bone tissue engineering. Among various biomaterials, calcium phosphate based materials include hydroxyapatite (HA), α-tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP), and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) are widely used as scaffold materials in bone tissue engineering.

Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics, Jilin University, Changchun 130012, China; Jilin Provincial Key Laboratory of Applied Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy, Jinlin University, Changchun 130012, China. Electronic address:

Ab initio calculations on potential energy curves (PECs), spectroscopic constants, transition dipole moments, radiative transition probabilities and lifetimes for the ground state (X(2)Σ(+)) and the first excited state (A(2)Π) of MgX (X=F, Cl, Br, I) molecules are determined by high-level internally contracted multi-reference configuration interaction (ic-MRCI) method. In order to improve the calculation, the Davidson modification (+Q) and scalar relativistic correction are included. The present results show that most of spectroscopic constants are in accordance with the measurements, the equilibrium internuclear distance Re increases while the other spectroscopic constants reduce along with the increasing of the atomic number of the halogen from F to I.

Inheritable colorectal cancers (CRC) accounted for about 20% of the CRC cases, such as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), Gardner syndrome and familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). A four-generation Han Chinese family was found affected with polyposis in colons. Inferred from the pedigree structure, the disease in this family showed an autosomal dominant inheritance model.

March 2014

Animal Nutrition Department, College of Animal Science, South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China

The genetic resources and the mechanism of miniaturization in the Tibet Mini-pig have not been comprehensively studied. Polymorphisms in genes related to the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) axis have been investigated for years, but few on the polymorphism of IGF-binding protein-5 (IGFBP-5) in the Tibetan pig. In this study, allele-specific polymerase chain reaction (AS-PCR) was used to analyze polymorphisms in exon 1 of the IGFBP-5 gene in two pig breeds, Tibet Mini-pigs and Junmu No.
