January 2022

The Department of Medical Oncology, Hainan West Central Hospital, Danzhou, 571700, Hainan, China.

Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of primary liver cancer and one of the major causes of cancer-related death. Thymidylate synthase (TYMS) catalyzes the methylation of deoxy guanosine to deoxy thymidylate, which is a crucial gene for DNA repair and replication. Thus, TYMS was reported to be closely associated with developing a variety of tumors, but it has been poorly studied in HCC.

January 2022

Department of Hematology, Jingzhou Central Hospital, The Second Clinical Medical College, Yangtze University, No.60, Jingzhong Road, Jingzhou, 434020, Hubei Province, China.

Background: B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA) chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy has obtained promising results in relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma (R/R MM), while some patients do not response, or relapse in short term after treatment. Combining with anti-CD38 might solve the problem of targeting BCMA alone. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of BCMA and CD38 (BCMA-CD38) bispecific CAR-T cells in R/R MM patients.

Downregulation of Smad4 expression confers chemoresistance against imatinib mesylate to chronic myeloid leukemia K562 cells.

Hematology

December 2022

Department of Hematology, Jingzhou Central Hospital, Institute of Hematology, Yangtze University, Jingzhou, People's Republic of China.

Imatinib mesylate (IM), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, exhibits clinically prominent effects against chronic myeloid leukemia (CML); however, a few patients have shown resistance to IM treatment, resulting in disease progression. Smad4 is a tumor inhibitor that transduces TGF-β signaling and modulates genomic stability. Previous studies have indicated that decreased Smad4 expression played a bidirectional role in chemosensitivity in many types of cancers.

N-methyladenosine (mA), as the most pervasive internal modification of eukaryotic mRNA, plays a crucial role in various cancers, but its role in multiple myeloma (MM) pathogenesis has not yet been investigated. In this study, we revealed significantly decreased mA methylation in plasma cells (PCs) from MM patients and showed that the abnormal mA level resulted mainly from upregulation of the demethylase fat mass and obesity-associated protein (FTO). Gain- and loss-of-function studies demonstrated that FTO plays a tumor-promoting and pro-metastatic role in MM.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the effects of surgery on breast cancer (BC) patients who only had bone metastases using data from the SEER database.
  • It found that patients who underwent surgery had longer median survival times compared to those who didn't, with breast-conserving surgery showing the most significant improvement in survival.
  • The conclusion suggests that primary surgery, especially when tumor burden is low, can enhance the survival of BC patients with bone metastasis, making breast-conserving surgery a preferable option.
