Conventional treatments for autoimmune uveitis, such as corticosteroids and systemic immunosuppressants, often result in adverse side effects, prompting the need for therapies targeting specific molecular pathways. This study investigates the effects of Arctiin, known for its diverse biological properties, on experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) through its action on Th17 cells and the JAK/STAT signaling pathway. Our findings reveal that Arctiin significantly alleviates EAU by reducing clinical scores, inflammatory cell infiltration, and levels of inflammatory cytokines like IL-17 and TNF-α in the eye.

Rationale: Thrombus is the most common occupying lesion in the cardiac chambers, it is often distinguished from cardiac neoplastic occupations. Among them, the most common is cardiac myxoma, whose imaging manifestations are often confused with thrombus. However, the 2 types of lesions have different therapeutic strategies and are both potentially high-risk sources of embolism, so early differentiation between intracardiac thrombus and cardiac tumor is essential.

Front Biosci (Landmark Ed)

December 2024

Department of Gynecology, Jincheng Hospital Affiliated to Changzhi Medical College, Jincheng People's Hospital, 048026 Jincheng, Shanxi, China.

Background: Endometriosis is a complicated and enigmatic disease that significantly diminishes the quality of life for women affected by this condition. Increased levels of human telomerase reverse transcriptase () mRNA and telomerase activity have been found in the endometrium of these patients. However, the precise function of TERT in endometriosis and the associated biological mechanisms remain poorly understood.

Ribosome-associated quality control (RQC), a ubiquitous process essential for maintaining protein homeostasis in eukaryotes, acts as a critical surveillance system for protein translation. By identifying and eliminating stalled ribosomes, RQC prevents aberrant translation and the production of potentially toxic misfolded proteins. The review focuses on the role of RQC in mammals, where its complete functionality remains to be elucidated.

Does two-level hybrid surgery promote early fusion compared with two-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion?

Spine J

December 2024

Department of Orthopedics, Orthopedic Research Institute, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, China. Electronic address:

Background Context: Hybrid surgery (HS), which involves both anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) and cervical disc replacement (ACDR), is increasingly used to treat multilevel cervical disc degenerative disease, yielding satisfactory clinical outcomes. Early fusion is critical after anterior cervical fusion surgeries, but there are no studies comparing the rate of early fusion of HS with that of ACDF.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the rate of early fusion (3-6 months postoperatively) of two-level HS with that of two-level ACDF surgery.

Introduction: Infantile vaginal yolk sac tumor (YST) is a rare and aggressive form of pediatric cancer that often presents with bloody discharge. Despite advances in chemotherapy, managing post-chemotherapy AFP level rebounds remains a challenge. This case report describes a 7-month-old girl with vaginal YST whose AFP levels rose following 3 cycles of PEB chemotherapy.

Background: Vitamin D, an essential fat-soluble micronutrient, exerts diverse physiological effects including the regulation of calcium ion homeostasis, modulation of immune response, and enhancement of resistance against infectious pathogens. Empirical investigations have elucidated an association between inadequate levels of vitamin D and adverse clinical outcomes in critically ill cohorts, with a noteworthy prevalence of vitamin D deficiency observed among patients afflicted with acute kidney injury (AKI). In the context of this retrospective inquiry, our aim was to assess the potential correlation between vitamin D supplementation administered during admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) and the improvement of outcomes specifically in cases of severe AKI.

To explore the association between 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25-(OH)-D], interleukin-4 (IL-4), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) infection-related asthma. Logistic analysis was conducted to compare general data in MP asthma and MP non-asthma groups. The level of 25-(OH)-D, IL-4, and IFN-γ were detected and compared between groups.

Background: This study aimed to assess the prognostic significance of serum ferritin levels in sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) and their correlation with short-term mortality. Despite the established predictive value of serum ferritin in various serious diseases, its specific prognostic relevance in SA-AKI remains unexplored. Therefore, this study seeks to fill this research gap by investigating the association between serum ferritin levels and short-term mortality in patients with SA-AKI.

  • Combining HDAC inhibitors with PPARγ agonists shows promise in fighting cancer, particularly melanoma.
  • A new compound, CS4, has been developed and found to effectively inhibit HDAC enzymes and reduce the growth of melanoma cells.
  • CS4 not only enhances specific protein acetylation to inhibit cell growth but also induces cell cycle arrest and has minimal toxicity in vivo, suggesting its potential as a melanoma treatment.

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACis) show beneficial effects on different hematological malignancy subtypes. However, their impacts on treating solid tumors are still limited due to diverse resistance mechanisms. Recent studies have found that the feedback activation of BRD4-LIFR-JAK1-STAT3 pathway after HDACi incubation is a vital mechanism inducing resistance of specific solid tumor cells to HDACis.

J Gastrointest Oncol

April 2024

Department of Gastroenterology, Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University, National Clinical Research Center for Digestive Disease, Beijing Digestive Diseases Center, Beijing Key Laboratory for Precancerous Lesion of Digestive Disease, Beijing, China.

Background: Early gastric cancer (EGC) is defined as cancer cells confined to the mucosal or submucosal layer, irrespective of size or presence of lymph node metastasis. The recent EGC endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) guidelines (2021 Japan Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society (JGES) guidelines, 2nd edition) revised the concept from "endoscopic curative/non-curative resection" (NCR) to "endoscopic curability (eCura)". Under this, eCuraA and eCuraB signify curative resections (CRs), while eCuraC (including eCuraC-1 and eCura-C2) indicate NCRs.

The NAPRT-induced increase in NAD levels was proposed as a mechanism contributing to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) resistance to NAMPT inhibitors. Thus, concurrently targeting NAMPT and NAPRT could be considered to overcome drug resistance. A BRD4 inhibitor downregulates the expression of NAPRT in HCC, and the combination of NAMPT inhibitors with BRD4 inhibitors simultaneously blocks NAD generation via salvage and the PH synthesis pathway.

Climate change is a serious environmental issue appearing in China. As a public service institution operating around the clock, the negative impact of hospitals on the environment is evident, promoting their workers' pro-environmental behavior (PEB) through increasing climate change health risk perception (CHRP) is an effective method to protect the environment and achieve sustainable development. This study investigates how CHRP shapes pro-environmental attitude (PEA), pro-environmental intention (PEI), and pro-environmental behavior (PEB) among hospital workers.
