Nowadays, due to the structural advantages gained by combining three different materials' properties, columns made of carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)-confined concrete with inner steel tube have received researchers' interest. This article presents the nonlinear finite element analysis and multiple machine learning (ML) model-based study on the behavior of round corner rectangular CFRP-confined concrete short columns reinforced by the inner high-strength elliptical steel tube under the axial load. The reliability of the proposed nonlinear finite element model was verified against the existing experimental investigations.

Pyrolysis of Khat waste vs. Coal: Experimental and Aspen plus analysis.

Heliyon

October 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, College of Engineering and Technology, Dambi Dollo University, Dambi Dollo, Ethiopia.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study analyzes the physical properties and pyrolytic behavior of Khat waste as a biofuel, demonstrating its potential to reduce waste and CO2 emissions, particularly in rural developing areas like Ethiopia.
  • - Key findings reveal that Khat waste has a density of 0.9688 g/cm³ and distinctive thermal behavior, with specific temperature points for moisture loss and decomposition of hemicellulose and cellulose identified through TGA and DTGA.
  • - Simulation with Aspen Plus shows that adjusting heating rates during pyrolysis influences the composition of the resulting biofuel, suggesting that optimized conditions can enhance Khat waste's efficiency as a renewable energy source.

Wastewater from human activities, particularly from brewery industries, is a significant source of pollution. Large volumes of biodegradable and non-biodegradable substances found in brewery effluent make them suitable for natural coagulant-assisted electrocoagulation. The treatment options available today are highly harmful and not economical.

Seasonal dynamics, resting behaviour and insecticide susceptibility of mosquitoes across two differentially malaria-endemic regions in Ethiopia.

Curr Res Parasitol Vector Borne Dis

October 2024

School of Medical Laboratory Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, Jimma University, Jimma, Ethiopia.

Information on bionomics of species composition, seasonal dynamics and insecticide susceptibility status is important to understand malaria transmission in any particular eco-epidemiological setting and for the design of effective vector control strategies. Here, adult mosquitoes were collected using CDC light traps (CDC LTs) and human landing catches (HLC) for 17 months between June 2018 and September 2020 from Lare District of Ethiopia. Larvae and pupae of anopheline mosquitoes were collected from breeding sites of Lare District and Jimma and reared to adulthood.

December 2024

USDA ARS, Aflatoxin Control Laboratory, 416 West Congress Street, Tucson, Arizona, United States, 85701;

Fusarium ear rot (FER) and Gibberella ear rot (GER) caused by Fusarium species are major diseases affecting maize production in Ethiopia. In addition to reducing quality and yield, these fungi can produce mycotoxins that contaminate maize kernels and, thereby, pose health hazards to humans and livestock. A survey was conducted in 10 administrative zones of Ethiopia within the major maize-growing regions of the country to identify the species of Fusarium associated with ear rot.

  • Birth weight is crucial for neonatal survival, and poor nutrition during pregnancy often leads to low birth weight, with the study exploring the impact of fresh moringa leaf consumption in southern Ethiopia.*
  • A study involving 460 pregnant women (230 consuming fresh moringa leaves and 230 not) found that those who ate moringa had significantly higher birth weights (mean birth weight 3334.42g vs. 3196.73g). *
  • The results suggest that fresh moringa leaf consumption during pregnancy is beneficial for increasing birth weight, prompting a call for further research to determine the optimal intake amount and duration needed for the best outcomes.*

The use of brewery waste for the removal of pollutants such as chromium has rarely been studied. In the present work, the removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous solutions was evaluated by brewer's spent grain (BSG), brewing sewage sludge (BSS), and their mixture (MIX), which were obtained from the Bedele Brewery Share Company, Ethiopia. BSG with acid and heat treatment at 600 °C was selected during the preliminary screening experiments and further characterized via FTIR, XRD, and SEM.
