Background: Pegmolesatide, a synthetic peptide-based erythropoietin (EPO) receptor agonist, is being evaluated as an alternative to epoetin alfa for treating anemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Chinese dialysis patients. There is a critical need for a long-acting, cost-effective erythropoiesis-stimulating agent that does not produce EPO antibodies.

Methods: A randomized, open-label, active-comparator, non-inferiority phase three trial was conducted at 43 dialysis centers in China between May 17th, 2019, and March 28th, 2022.

Single-cell sequencing (SCS) technology is changing our understanding of cellular components, functions, and interactions across organisms, because of its inherent advantage of avoiding noise resulting from genotypic and phenotypic heterogeneity across numerous samples. By directly and individually measuring multiple molecular characteristics of thousands to millions of single cells, SCS technology can characterize multiple cell types and uncover the mechanisms of gene regulatory networks, the dynamics of transcription, and the functional state of proteomic profiling. In this context, we conducted systematic research on SCS techniques, including the fundamental concepts, procedural steps, and applications of scDNA, scRNA, scATAC, scCITE, and scSNARE methods, focusing on the unique clinical advantages of SCS, particularly in cancer therapy.

The brain-computer interface (BCI)-mediated rehabilitation is emerging as a solution to restore motor skills in paretic patients after stroke. In the human brain, cortical motor neurons not only fire when actions are carried out but are also activated in a wired manner through many cognitive processes related to movement such as imagining, perceiving, and observing the actions. Moreover, the recruitment of motor cortexes can usually be regulated by environmental conditions, forming a closed-loop through neurofeedback.

Objective: This study investigated if silver nanoparticles (AgNps) could promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of mouse embryonic fibroblasts.

Methods: Mouse embryonic fibroblasts were divided into two groups: Group 1 cells were cultured in DMEM/F12 medium and Group 2 cells were cultured in osteogenic medium. Both groups were then treated with 16, 32, or 100 μM AgNps.

Maresin-1 inhibits high glucose induced ferroptosis in ARPE-19 cells by activating the Nrf2/HO-1/GPX4 pathway.

BMC Ophthalmol

September 2023

Ophthalmology Department, Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Xiamen University, No.201-209 Hubinnan Road, Siming District, 361004, Xiamen, China.

Background: Maresin-1 plays an important role in diabetic illnesses and ferroptosis is associated with pathogenic processes of diabetic retinopathy (DR). The goal of this study is to explore the influence of maresin-1 on ferroptosis and its molecular mechanism in DR.

Methods: ARPE-19 cells were exposed to high glucose (HG) condition for developing a cellular model of DR.

This study aimed to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion (SCI/R) injury. Through RNA-Seq high-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics analysis, we found that EGFR was downregulated in the spinal cord of SCI/R mice and may function via mediating the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. In vitro cell experiments indicated that overexpression of EGFR activated the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway and reduced neuronal apoptosis levels.

The Burden of Cardiovascular Diseases Attributed to Diet High in Sugar-Sweetened Beverages in 204 Countries and Territories From 1990 to 2019.

Curr Probl Cardiol

January 2024

Department of Thoracic Surgery, The Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-Sen University, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. Electronic address:

This study examines the impact of sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption on cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and aims to provide evidence for preventive measures. The analysis involved a comprehensive scrutiny of CVD-related data from 1990 to 2019. Temporal trends of ASMR and ASDR were assessed using the Estimated Annual Percentage Change (EAPC).

Objective: Acetaminophen (APAP) is one of the world's popular and safe painkillers, and overdose can cause severe liver damage and even acute liver failure. The effect and mechanism of the xanthohumol on acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity remains unclear.

Methods: The hepatoprotective effects of xanthohumol were studied using APAP-induced HepG2 cells and acute liver injury of mouse, seperately.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Tiaogan Jiejiu Tongluo Formula (TJTF), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, is modified from the well-known ancient prescription Danzhi-Xiaoyao Powder (DXP). Owing to its ability to regulate liver, strengthen spleen, detoxicating, and dredge collaterals in Chinese medicine, TJTF is usually used to treat anxiety, hypertension, alcoholic fatty liver disease in clinical application. However, the protective effect and potential molecular mechanism of TJTF on alcoholic liver injury has not fully been clarified.

Food Funct

June 2023

Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, School of Public Health, Jilin University, Changchun, China.

: Precocious puberty, one of the common pediatric endocrine system diseases, has been related to reduced adult height, adverse psychological outcomes and long-term health consequences. Previous findings have found that low levels of vitamin D appear to be associated with the characteristics of precocious puberty such as early menarche. However, the effect of vitamin D on precocious puberty remains controversial.

Objectives: Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs) are common injuries in the general population. Abnormal mechanical conditions applied to defected cartilage are believed to be the culprits to deteriorating OLTs. This study aims to investigate the biomechanical effects of defect size of talar cartilage on OLTs during ankle movements.

The transcription factor Krüppel-like factor (KLF) 3 is one of the members of the KLF family, which plays an important role in tumor progression. Nevertheless, the role of KLF3 in the growth and metastasis of gastric cancer (GC) still needs to be elucidated. Bioinformatics analysis showed that KLF3 was overexpressed in patients with GC, and the high expression of KLF3 was correlated with poor survival.

Metformin attenuates fibroblast activation during pulmonary fibrosis by targeting S100A4 AMPK-STAT3 axis.

Front Pharmacol

February 2023

Pediatric Translational Medicine Institute, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China.

Fibroblasts activation is a crucial process for development of fibrosis during idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis pathogenesis, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1 plays a key regulatory role in fibroblast activation. It has been reported that metformin (MET) alleviated bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis (PF) by regulating TGF-β1-induced fibroblasts activation, but the underlying mechanisms still deserve further investigations. In this study, MET blocked α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) accumulation accompanied with S100A4 expression and STAT3 phosphorylation inhibition, resulting in attenuating the progression of lung fibrosis after BLM administration.
