Oxidative stress is closely associated with the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels. A comprehensive indicator for evaluating dietary and lifestyle exposures to oxidative stress is the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS), with higher OBS suggesting more substantial antioxidant exposures. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between OBS and eGFR levels.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ivarmacitinib, a JAK 1 inhibitor, in patients with moderate-to-severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who did not respond adequately to standard treatments.
  • - Participants were divided into three groups to receive either placebo, ivarmacitinib 4 mg, or 8 mg once daily, with primary outcomes measured after 24 weeks based on 20% improvement in RA symptoms (ACR20).
  • - Results showed significantly higher improvement rates in those taking ivarmacitinib compared to placebo, with manageable safety concerns, indicating it could be a promising option for this patient population.

Article Synopsis
  • - Study focused on the connection between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cognitive impairment, proposing hypoxic burden as a new indicator better than traditional hypoxic measures.
  • - Involving 116 patients, researchers assessed cognitive function and daytime sleepiness, using logistic regression models to analyze the relationship between hypoxic burden and mild cognitive impairment (MCI).
  • - Results showed that higher hypoxic burden, especially in REM sleep, was linked to a greater risk of MCI in OSA patients, suggesting hypoxic burden could be a key factor in evaluating cognitive function in these individuals.

Background: Simnotrelvir has demonstrated potent anti-viral activity against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In a Phase II/III study, Simnotrelvir plus ritonavir (S/R, co-packaged) shortened the time to the resolution of symptoms in adult COVID-19 patients. However, real-world data on effectiveness of simnotrelvir/ritonavir against SARS-CoV-2 during XBB variant surges are still limited.

World Neurosurg

October 2024

Associate chief professor, Department of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery, Jilin Province People's Hospital, No. 1183, Gongnong Street, 130000, Changchun, Jilin Province, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A 70-year-old man experienced progressive vision loss in his right eye over 2 months, with noticeable changes in the conjunctival vessels of both eyes.
  • Diagnostic tests, including macular OCT and a cerebral angiogram, revealed macular edema and a left carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) as the underlying causes.
  • After receiving treatment through endovascular interventional embolization to close the fistula, the patient saw improvements in eye redness and visual acuity at a follow-up visit one month later.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates S100β as a biomarker for astroglial damage and its effect on prognosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke after intravenous thrombolysis (IVT).
  • Researchers analyzed data from 1072 patients, measuring S100β levels 24 hours post-IVT, and found that higher levels were linked to worse outcomes, larger infarct volumes, and higher NIHSS scores.
  • Notably, S100β levels had a stronger correlation with outcomes in patients with dominant hemisphere strokes compared to those with non-dominant strokes.

Aims: O-Linked β-N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAc) modification, a unique post-translational modification of proteins, is elevated in diabetic nephropathy. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge on the mechanisms by which O-GlcNAcylation of proteins contributes to the pathogenesis and progression of diabetic nephropathy, as well as the therapeutic potential of targeting O-GlcNAc modification for its treatment.

Methods: Current evidence in the literature was reviewed and synthesized in a narrative review.

Whether the dynamic development of peripheral inflammation aggravates brain injury and leads to poor outcome in stroke patients receiving intravenous thrombolysis (IVT), remains unclear and warrants further study. In this study, total of 1034 patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent IVT were enrolled. Serum leukocyte variation (whether increase from baseline to 24 h after IVT), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), infarct volume, early neurologic deterioration (END), the unfavorable outcome at 3-month (modified Rankin Scale [mRS] score ≥3) and mortality were recorded.

Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of 5% lidocaine-medicated plaster (LMP) in patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN).

Background: TN is an excruciatingly painful type of neuropathic facial pain. Anti-epileptics are the first-line treatment for TN; however, these oral drugs alone sometimes fail to achieve satisfactory analgesic effects.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical cancer is a serious type of cancer that affects the cervix, characterized by high rates of incidence and mortality, along with a tendency to spread to other parts of the body.
  • Asiatic acid has shown potential in blocking cancer progression, showing effects like reduced inflammation and tumor growth, but its specific mechanisms in treating cervical cancer are not completely understood.
  • Research indicates that asiatic acid can inhibit the growth and spread of cervical cancer cells and may act on the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, but more studies are needed to clarify how it works.

Elevated RHAMM as a biomarker for predicting diabetic kidney disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Clin Kidney J

July 2024

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Metabolic Remodeling and Health, Institute of Metabolism and Integrative Biology, Liver Cancer Institute, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Background: Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) poses a significant challenge globally as a complication of diabetes. Hyaluronan (HA), a critical non-sulfated glycosaminoglycan in the extracellular matrix, plays a pivotal role in the progression of DKD. This study assesses the predictive significance of HA's corresponding receptor, RHAMM (receptor for HA-mediated motility), in DKD pathogenesis in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients.

Whispers of the polycystic ovary syndrome theater: Directing role of long noncoding RNAs.

Noncoding RNA Res

December 2024

Department of Pathology and Pathophysiology, Yan Bian University, Yanbian, Jilin, China.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a multifaceted endocrine disorder that implicates a spectrum of clinical manifestations, including hormonal imbalance, metabolic dysfunction, and even compromised ovarian granulosa cell (GC) activity. The underlying molecular mechanisms of PCOS remain elusive, presenting a significant barrier to effective diagnosis and treatment. This review delves into the emerging role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the pathophysiology of PCOS, articulating their intricate interactions with mRNAs, microRNAs, and other epigenetic regulators that collectively influence the hormonal and metabolic milieu of PCOS.
