Introduction And Importance: The importance of preoperative tumor site marking has increased over the years, as the method of intraoperative primary lesion identification and determination of resection margins is one factor determining whether oncological safety and function-preserving gastrectomy are possible during surgery. We hypothesize that preoperative placement of the near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) clip, ZEOCLIP FS, near the oral incision line of the gastric tumor will allow for Firefly recognition of the NIRF clip on da Vinci during surgery and easy determination of the tumor location and incision line. Hence, we report on two cases in which the procedure was performed.

Animation of latissimus dorsi flap in breast reconstruction: a retrospective analysis based on 203 cases.

J Plast Surg Hand Surg

October 2024

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Tokyo Metropolitan Cancer and Infectious Diseases Center, Komagome Hospital, Tokyo, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the common postoperative issue of breast animation after breast reconstruction surgery, focusing on factors that might influence its occurrence.
  • Among the patients analyzed, the incidence of animation was found to be 69.6%, and the only significant factor was the complete dissection of the latissimus dorsi muscle insertion.
  • The findings suggest that prophylactic denervation is not recommended unless there is persistent discomfort, highlighting the importance of proper surgical techniques to minimize animation and preserve nerve function.

  • This study looked at women with bladder cancer who had surgery to remove their bladder and other reproductive organs to see how many still had problems with their reproductive organs.
  • Out of 417 women, some had their uterus and vaginal wall saved, but about 9% showed signs of cancer in their reproductive areas.
  • The researchers concluded that doctors need to think carefully about whether to save these organs during surgery because there's a risk that cancer could still affect them.

Estimation of reference interval for neutrophil activity evaluation systems: a interim report.

J Clin Biochem Nutr

September 2024

Global Strategic Challenge Center, Hamamatsu Photonics K.K., 5000 Hirakuchi, Hamana-ku, Hamamatsu-shi, Shizuoka 434-8601, Japan.

Neutrophils play an important role in innate immunity and produce reactive oxygen species, but they can also cause inflammation and oxidative stress that can damage their own tissues. We have developed neutrophil activity evaluation systems that simultaneously monitors superoxide radicals and hypochlorite ions secreted by stimulated neutrophils in a few microliters of whole blood and have conducted clinical studies in humans. Here, we report normal reference intervals with our systems based on the results of 3,082 persons who underwent comprehensive cancer screening between February 2020 and March 2022.
