Large-scale population cohort studies that collect genomic information are tasked with returning an assessment of genetic risk for hereditary cancers to participants. While several studies have applied to return identified genetic risks to participants, comprehensive surveys of participants' understanding, feelings, and behaviors toward cancer risk remain to be conducted. Here, we report our experience and surveys of returning genetic risks to 100 carriers of pathogenic variants for hereditary cancers identified through whole genome sequencing of 50 000 individuals from the Tohoku Medical Megabank project, a population cohort study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes between para-colostomy hernia (PCH) and para-ileal-conduit hernia (PICH) following laparoscopic repairs using data from 41 cases at Jikei University Daisan Hospital.
  • Results indicated no significant differences in patient backgrounds or hernia features, but PICH had a higher rate of severe intra-abdominal adhesions (60% vs. 23%) and longer operation times (223 minutes vs. 158 minutes).
  • The findings suggest that PICH repairs are more challenging due to these factors, highlighting the need for separate discussions on surgical outcomes for different types of stomas.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looked at women with bladder cancer who had surgery to remove their bladder and other reproductive organs to see how many still had problems with their reproductive organs.
  • Out of 417 women, some had their uterus and vaginal wall saved, but about 9% showed signs of cancer in their reproductive areas.
  • The researchers concluded that doctors need to think carefully about whether to save these organs during surgery because there's a risk that cancer could still affect them.
