Objective: To assess the prevalence of brain MRI abnormalities in people with epilepsy in rural China and to compare it with that of individuals in the United Kingdom.
Methods: Brain MRI scans were obtained in people with epilepsy who participated in a rural community-based program in China between July 2010 and December 2012. Individual epileptogenic lesion types were reviewed and their associations with seizure control examined.

Background: Large amounts of researches indicate that non-coding RNAs play a crucial role in many malignancies. However, the potential mechanisms of non-coding RNAs involved in osteosarcoma tumorigenesis remain elusive.
Materials And Methods: The expression of long non-protein coding RNA 691 (lncRNA 691) in cell lines and paired osteosarcoma tissues was compared by qRT-PCR assay.

Gastric cancer (GC), identified as the most common gastrointestinal malignancy, is one of the primary causes of cancer-related mortality in the world. Although surgery and chemotherapy for GC treatment have been improved, the 5-year overall survival rate is still unsatisfactory. Circ-NOTCH1 is a novel circular RNA derived from its host gene NOTCH1, and has not been studied in any cancers.

In this report, we present a pH-induced reversible assembly system (PIRAS) based on ferritin (Ft) for targeted tumor therapy. It has been developed to easily load and release of the anticancer drug resveratrol (RV), based on its natural pH-sensitivity and unique hollow cavity of Ft. A tumor-specific target peptide Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) was conjugated onto the surface of RV-loaded Ft (RV@Ft), to form biocompatible nanoparticles (RV@Ft-RGD).

This work aimed to investigate the role and related mechanism of limonin in regulating the stemness of cervical carcinoma (CC) cells. In the present study, we constructed adriamycin-resistant CC cells and found that they exhibited greater stemness than parental cells. Additionally, limonin attenuated the stemness of CC cells that were resistant or sensitive to adriamycin, as evidenced by the decreases in spheroid formation capacity, stemness markers expression and ALDH1 activity, whereas limonin did not affect the viability of normal cervical epithelial cells.

Melanoma is an aggressive type of skin cancer, characterized by high mortality rates worldwide. Therefore, the identification of new diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for melanoma is imperative. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in tumor initiation and progression.

Hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI) is tissue damage resulting from return of the blood supply to the tissue after a period of ischemia or lack of oxygen. Much of the morbidity associated with liver transplantation and major hepatic resections is, in part, due to IRI. Both innate immunity and autophagy play important roles in hepatic IRI.

BACKGROUND Studies have shown that intermittent hypoxia mimics obstructive sleep apnea in causing pulmonary inflammation, but the mechanism is not yet clear.TLR-4 is a recognized proinflammatory factor, so the purpose of this study was to assess the function of TLR-4 in pulmonary inflammation induced by chronic intermittent hypoxia simulating obstructive sleep apnea. MATERIAL AND METHODS Healthy male Wistar rats were divided into 3 groups (8 in each group): the normoxia control group (CG), the intermittent hypoxia group (IH), and the TLR4 antagonist TAK242 treatment group (3 mg/kg, daily), with exposure durations of 12 weeks and 16 weeks (HI).

Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a central role in hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). The significance of mitophagy in hepatic IRI remains poorly understood. The mechanisms that cause IRI are complex, and many factors are involved in the injury formation process.

Basement membrane thickening, glomerular hypertrophy, and deposition of multiple extracellular matrix characterize the pathological basis of diabetic nephropathy (DN), a condition which ultimately leads to glomerular and renal interstitial fibrosis. Here, we identified a novel microRNA, miR-130b, and investigated its role and therapeutic efficacy in alleviating DN. Introduction of miR-130b dramatically increased cell growth and fibrosis in DN cells.

Ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury causes cellular dysfunction and a series of immune or apoptotic reactions. Bach1 is a mammalian transcription factor that represses Hmox1, which encodes heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) that can degrade heme into free iron, carbon monoxide, and biliverdin, to play an important role in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic activities. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can be found in a variety of eukaryotic cells and viruses, a class of noncoding small RNAs that are encoded by endogenous genes.

The highly refractory nature of cervical cancer to chemotherapeutic drugs and its epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) are the key reasons contributing to the poor prognosis of this disease. Golgi Membrane Protein 1 (GOLM1), a protein involved in the trafficking of proteins through the Golgi apparatus, has been shown to be oncogenic in a variety of human cancers. Herein, we found GOLM1 was markedly up-regulated in cervical cancer and GOLM1 down-expression enhanced the anti-tumor effect of methotrexate.

Background/aims: Interferon regulatory factor 1(IRF-1) and high mobility group box 1(HMGB1) have been independently identified as being key players in hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). We attempted to determine whether IRF-1 activates autophagy to aggravate hepatic IRI by increasing HMGB1 release.
Methods: The hepatic IRI model was generated in C57BL/6 mice, euthanized at 2, 6, 12 or 24 h after reperfusion.

Either angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) or angiotensin receptor 1 blocker (ARB) attenuates cardiac remodeling. However, the overall molecular modulation of the reversing remodeling process in response to the ACEI or ARB treatment is not yet well determined. In this study, we examined whether gene expressions are modulated by ACEI (temocapril), ARB (olmesartan) or both in a murine model with transverse aortic constriction (TAC) and confirm whether periostin is a target gene of olmesartan in mice with myocardial infarction (MI).

Background: Central obesity and overweight/obesity can result in various chronic non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes mellitus. Waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) are widely used to measure obesity despite their limitations. For example, WC and BMI cannot be measured in pregnant women and subjects with abdominal ascites or masses.

In performing our experiment, impaired autophagy increased hepatocellular damage during the reperfusion period. It was demonstrated by the effect of blocking autophagy using bafilomycin A1 or knocking Atg5 gene out reduces the anti-apoptotic effect of Stat3. Here we focus on the role of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (Stat3) in regulating autophagy to alleviate hepatic IRI.

Objective: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is associated with the high premature mortality observed among people with epilepsy. It is, however, considered a rare event in China, probably because of lack of awareness and limitation of studies in the country. We aimed to provide some initial estimation of the burden of SUDEP in China.
