The aim of the present study was to explore the effect of naringenin on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) in a mouse model, as well as the underlying mechanism. The animals were randomly assigned to four groups: PBS-treated healthy control (Control), LPS-induced ALI (LPS), vehicle-treated ALI (LPS + Vehicle), and naringenin-treated ALI (LPS + Nar) group. Naringenin (100 mg/kg) was administered orally for 4 consecutive days, starting 3 days prior to induction of ALI.

Recent evidence suggested an important role of matrix metalloproteinases 16 (MMP16) in the progression of several cancers. However, the contribution of MMP16 to colorectal cancer (CRC) remains elusive. In this study, we combined analyzed the MMP16 expression in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), GSE39582 database and in-house database.

Background: Numerous studies have demonstrated that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have many biological functions and play crucial roles in various human cancers, including cancer development, metastasis and prognosis of cancer patients. CCAT2, a novel long non-coding RNA, has been identified as correlating with several different types of cancers. However, the role of lncRNA CCAT2 in gastric cancer (GC) patients is unknown.

Abdominal pain and diarrhea were the most common symptoms in clinics, which could be caused by various diseases such as acute gastroenteritis, intestinal cancer and so on. Here, we report an unusual case of splenic arteriovenous fistula (SAVF) with splenectomy history. Our patient was initially presented with the symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Background: Previous studies have been inconsistent with respect to the reported associations between human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER-2/neu) overexpression in colorectal cancer. The aims of this meta-analysis are to assess its correlation with clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic significance in colorectal cancer.
Methods: Eligible studies were searched in Pubmed, Embase and Web of Science databases.

Background: Recent studies have shown that a protective stoma can reduce morbidity in low anterior resection for rectal cancer; however, the necessity of it is still controversially discussed.
Methods: We performed this meta-analysis to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the role of defunctioning stoma in low anterior resection for rectal cancer on the rates of anastomotic leakage and reoperation related to leakage with or without defunctioning stoma by calculating the pooled risk ratio.
Results: Studies and relevant literature published between 2004 and 2014 regarding the construction of a protective stoma after low anterior resection were searched though PubMed and EMBASE databases.

Aim: To provide a comprehensive evaluation of the role of a protective stoma in low anterior resection (LAR) for rectal cancer.
Methods: The PubMed, EMBASE, and MEDLINE databases were searched for studies and relevant literature published between 2007 and 2014 regarding the construction of a protective stoma during LAR. A pooled risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) was used to assess the outcomes of the studies, including the rate of postoperative anastomotic leakage and reoperations related to leakage.

Human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER-2/neu) plays an important role in the progression of several types of cancer. Numerous studies examining the relationship between HER-2 overexpression and prognostic impact in patients with colorectal cancer have yielded inconclusive results. We therefore conducted a meta-analysis to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the prognostic value of HER-2 expression on the survival, which compared the positive and negative expressions of HER-2 in patients of the available studies.

Objective: To evaluate the combination of the mortality in emergency department sepsis (MEDS) score with blood lactate level in the risk stratification of patients with severe sepsis in the emergency department (ED).
Methods: 665 adult patients with severe sepsis admitted from May 2011 to December 2012 in ED were found to be eligible for the study. MEDS score, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHEII) score, and arterial blood lactate was determined, and the outcomes in 28 days were recorded.
