Case report: co-infection of and in lungs.

AME Case Rep

October 2024

Division of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Jiangyin People's Hospital Affiliated to Nantong, Jiangyin, China.

Background: There are hundreds of pathogens that cause lung infections. Compared to infections caused by a single pathogen, mixed infections account for a larger proportion of pulmonary infections and have a more severe clinical presentation, while treatment options differ between the two. We aimed to explore the advantages of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in the diagnosis and treatment of mixed infections.

Background: Recent advancements in contemporary therapeutic approaches have increased the survival rates of lung cancer patients; however, the long-term benefits remain constrained, underscoring the pressing need for novel biomarkers. Surfactant-associated 3 (SFTA3), a long non-coding RNA predominantly expressed in normal lung epithelial cells, plays a crucial role in lung development. Nevertheless, its function in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) remains inadequately understood.

Background: (Iron-Sulfur Cluster Assembly 1) is involved in the assembly of iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters, which are vital for electron transport and enzyme activity. Some studies suggest the potential involvement of in tumor progression through interactions with ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) and the tumor immune microenvironment (TME). However, there has been no systematic analysis of its role in FRGs and the TME or its predictive value for prognosis and immunotherapy response across different cancer types.

Biological scaffolds are widely utilized in hernia treatment due to their exceptional pro-regenerative properties, which mitigate scar formation. However, serious complications occurred, caused by inflammatory response, premature degradation, and mechanical failure. Consequently, improvements of the biological scaffold are necessary to mitigate these risks.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a debilitating inflammatory bowel disease characterized by intestinal inflammation, barrier dysfunction, and dysbiosis, with limited treatment options available. This study systematically investigates the therapeutic potential of a synbiotic composed of galactooligosaccharides (GOS) and Limosilactobacillus reuteri in a murine model of colitis, revealing that GOS and L. reuteri synergistically protect against intestinal inflammation and barrier dysfunction by promoting the synthesis of pentadecanoic acid, an odd-chain fatty acid, from Bacteroides acidifaciens.

Background: Testosterone deficiency (TD) is an urgent health issue that requires attention, associated with various adverse health outcomes including cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and metabolic syndrome. Remnant cholesterol (RC) has emerged as a potential biomarker for cardiovascular risk, but its relationship with testosterone levels and TD has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aims to explore the association between RC and TD in adult American males using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

Article Synopsis
  • A phase III clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of different radiation doses (high vs. standard) and irradiation fields (involved field vs. elective nodal) on survival outcomes for patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
  • Results indicated that there were no significant differences in overall survival (OS) or progression-free survival (PFS) between the different irradiation fields, but the high-dose treatment suggested an improvement in PFS compared to the standard dose.
  • The best prognostic outcomes were observed in the high-dose with involved field group (HD+IFI), while the standard dose with involved field group (SD+IFI) had the worst outcomes, and no substantial differences in severe adverse events were

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore whether there is a genetic connection between different sleep traits (like chronotype and insomnia) and periodontitis (a gum disease).
  • Using advanced statistical methods, the researchers analyzed extensive genetic data but found no significant influence of sleep traits on periodontitis or vice versa.
  • The findings indicate that there is no evidence of a two-way genetic relationship between sleep characteristics and the risk of developing periodontitis.

Background: The role of autoimmune diseases (ADs) in temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) has been emphasized in observational studies. However, whether the causation exists is unclear, and controversy remains about which specific disorder is destructive in TMDs. This Mendelian randomization (MR) study aims to estimate the causal effect of common ADs on TMDs.

Background: The epigenetic-age acceleration (EAA) represents the difference between chronological age and epigenetic age, reflecting accelerated biological aging. Observational studies suggested that oral disorders may impact DNA methylation patterns and aging, but their causal relationship remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to investigate potential causal associations between dental traits and EAA, as well as to identify possible mediators.

Background: The albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have been recently regarded as promising prognostic factors in various malignancies. The present study investigated the prognostic value of combining the AGR and NLR (ANS) for risk assessments in multiple myeloma (MM) with renal impairment (RI).

Methods: From 2011 to 2018, 79 patients with MM and RI were enrolled in this study.

The C-reactive protein-triglyceride glucose index (CTI) is emerging as a novel indicator for comprehensively assessing the severity of both inflammation and insulin resistance. However, the association between CTI and erectile dysfunction (ED) remains largely unexplored. Participant data for this study were sourced from NHANES 2001-2004, with exclusion criteria applied to those lacking information on clinical variables.

Hyaluronic acid-conjugated methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil for targeted drug delivery.

Int J Biol Macromol

July 2024

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou 225002, PR China. Electronic address:

The delivery of chemotherapeutical drugs via nanomaterials has become a focus of pharmaceutical research over several decades due to improved drug delivery to cancer cells, decreased side effects on normal tissues, and increased therapeutic efficacy. Herein, a novel hyaluronic acid-conjugated methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil nanodrug system has been developed to address the critical limitations associated with the high toxicity and side effects of methotrexate and 5-fluorouracil. Furthermore, this nanodrug system enhances the targeting capacity of drug molecules and facilitates the potential integration of multimodal drug therapies.

Introduction: The atypical chemokine receptor 2 (ACKR2) is a chemokine scavenger receptor, which limits inflammation and organ damage in several experimental disease models including kidney diseases. However, potential roles of ACKR2 in reducing inflammation and tissue injury in autoimmune disorders like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis are unknown, as well as its effects on systemic autoimmunity.

Methods: To characterize functional roles of ACKR2 in SLE, genetic Ackr2 deficiency was introduced into lupus-prone C57BL/6lpr (Ackr2-/- B6lpr) mice.
