Rice protein peptide (RPP) has been reported to alleviate the symptoms of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis, but its potential protective effect and fundamental neurobiological mechanisms against DSS-induced inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), coupled with depression and cognitive impairment, remain unclear. In this study, RPP treatment in DSS-induced mice inhibited decreases in body weight and colon length and improved intestinal barrier function and behavioral performance. RPP treatment enhanced phenylalanine and tyrosine metabolism in the brains of mice, and it upregulated metabolites such as l-dopa, phenylethylamine, and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetate.

Background: Facing the significant challenge of overcoming drug resistance in cancer treatment, particularly resistance caused by mutations in epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), the aim of our study was to identify potent EGFR inhibitors effective against the mutant, a key player in resistance mechanisms.

Methods: Our integrated in silico approach harnessed machine learning, virtual screening, and activity evaluation techniques to screen 5105 compounds from three libraries, aiming to find candidates capable of overcoming the resistance conferred by the T790M and C797S mutations within EGFR. This methodical process narrowed the search down to six promising compounds for further examination.

GAPDH suppresses adenovirus-induced oxidative stress and enables a superfast production of recombinant adenovirus.

Genes Dis

November 2024

Departments of Urology, Endocrinology, Orthopedic Surgery, and Gastroenterological Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing 400016, China.

Recombinant adenovirus (rAdV) is a commonly used vector system for gene transfer. Efficient initial packaging and subsequent production of rAdV remains time-consuming and labor-intensive, possibly attributable to rAdV infection-associated oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Here, we show that exogenous GAPDH expression mitigates adenovirus-induced ROS-associated apoptosis in HEK293 cells, and expedites adenovirus production.

Background: Higher red blood cell distribution width (RDW) levels are associated with mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, more convincing evidence is still lacking, and the relationship between hemoglobin-to-red blood cell distribution width ratio (HRR) and mortality in patients with COPD remains unclear.

Methods: This study is a prospective cohort study that includes 3,745 adult patients with COPD from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database spanning from 1999 to 2018 in the United States.

Background: The emergence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is marked by a growing trend towards younger individuals, while its developmental trajectory remains shrouded in uncertainty, accompanied by intricate prognostic implications. While frailty and sleep problems often coexist, the relationship between them remains unclear. Hence, this study aims to utilize the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database from 2005 to 2008 to analyze and explore the relationship between the level of frailty index (FI) and the risk of OSA incidence and survival outcomes.

Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Laboratory of Metabolomics and Drug-Induced Liver Injury, Frontiers Science Center for Disease-Related Molecular Network, and State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Health and Multimorbidity, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, 610041, Sichuan, China.

Background: Prediabetes mellitus (PreDM) is a high-risk state for developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and often goes undiagnosed, which is closely associated with obesity and characterized by insulin resistance that urgently needs to be treated.

Purpose: To obtain a better understanding of the biological processes associated with both "spleen-dampness" syndrome individuals and those with dysglycaemic control at its earliest stages, we performed a detailed metabolomic analysis of individuals with various early impairments in glycaemic control, the results can facilitate clinicians' decision making and benefit individuals at risk.

Methods: According to the diagnostic criteria of TCM patterns and PreDM, patients were divided into 4 groups with 20 cases, patients with syndrome of spleen deficiency with dampness encumbrance and PreDM (PDMPXSK group), patients with syndrome of dampness-heat in the spleen and PreDM (PDMSRYP group), patients with syndrome of spleen deficiency with dampness encumbrance and normal blood glucose (NDMPXSK group), and patients with syndrome of dampness-heat in the spleen and normal blood glucose (NDMSRYP group).

The Therapeutic Potential of Lactobacillus crispatus for Chronic Endometritis: A Comprehensive Clinical Trial and Experimental Investigation.

Probiotics Antimicrob Proteins

August 2024

Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the First Affiliated Hospital, Jiangxi Medical College, Nanchang University, Nanchang, 330006, Jiangxi, China.

Chronic endometritis (CE) is common in patients with infertility, and it is challenging to treat with antibiotics as bacteria often acquire resistance to the antibiotics, which leads to frequent recurrence of the condition. Probiotics, especially Lactobacillus species, are known for their usefulness in treating reproductive infections. This study evaluated Lactobacillus crispatus chen 01 (L.

Background: Atherosclerosis (AS) is a major contributor to cerebrovascular and cardiovascular events. There is growing evidence that ankylosing spondylitis is closely linked to AS, often co-occurring with it; however, the shared pathogenic mechanisms between the two conditions are not well understood. This study employs bioinformatics approaches to identify common biomarkers and pathways between AS and ankylosing spondylitis.

Article Synopsis
  • Curcumae rhizoma (CR) is a traditional Chinese medicine derived from various Curcuma species, commonly used to treat blood stagnation, but its quality control has mainly focused on chemical composition without assessing biological effects.
  • Researchers developed an effect-constituent index (ECI) to evaluate CR’s quality by measuring key active components and their biological efficacy relevant to clinical outcomes, specifically using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
  • The ECI was found to correlate significantly with CR's antiplatelet aggregation biopotencies, indicating that a thorough integration of chemical and biological assessments can better reflect the efficacy and safety of CR in treating blood stagnation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study tested how a compound called EGCG affects energy use and cell health in mice with kidney damage caused by a drug called doxorubicin (DOX).
  • Mice were split into different groups to see how EGCG alone or with DOX helped reduce kidney problems and harmful substances in the blood.
  • The results showed that EGCG improved kidney health by lowering damage and changing how energy was made in cells, which could mean it might help protect against kidney injury in humans too.
