Osteomyelitis is a refractory disease of orthopedics, part of which is caused by medical implants. The main difficulties in treatment are the barrier effect after the formation of bacterial biofilm, and the difficulty in achieving sustained antibiotic intervention. In view of this situation, we studied a hydrogel coating that can release CaCl and vancomycin in pH-responsive manner.

Astragalus polysaccharide is one of the most extensively studied traditional Chinese medicinal polysaccharides because of its immunomodulatory activity and has attracted considerable attention. Existing evidence suggests that its potential immunomodulatory mechanism is related to the modulation of intestinal microbiota. However, current research methods on the gut microbiota mainly focus on 16S rRNA sequencing, providing limited evidence of specific changes in functional bacterial groups in the intestine.

  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is linked with eye conditions like iridocyclitis (IC), potentially due to shared genetics, as indicated by increasing occurrences of both conditions.
  • A comprehensive analysis using genetic data revealed positive correlations between IBD, ulcerative colitis (UC), and IC, particularly on chromosomes 1 and 6, but showed weaker connections for Crohn's disease (CD) and certain types of IC.
  • The study identified specific genes, such as IL23R and GPR35, common to both conditions, highlighting a shared genetic foundation that may inform future treatment and prevention strategies for IBD and IC.

Biosensor National Special Laboratory, Key Laboratory for Biomedical Engineering of Education Ministry, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310027, P. R. China.

Bacterial-driven dental caries and tooth discoloration are growing concerns as the most common oral health problems. Current diagnostic methods and treatment strategies hardly allow simultaneous early detection and non-invasive treatment of these oral diseases. Herein, a wearable multifunctional double network hydrogel combined with polyaniline and barium titanate (PANI@BTO) nanoparticles is developed for oral microenvironment visualized sensing and sonodynamic therapy.

Modulating the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) while enhancing antitumor immune responses is a promising strategy. In this study, we designed an acid-sensitive nanosystem (MCCaNPs) to demonstrate effective immunotherapy against cancer through the systemic delivery of immune-stimulating chemotherapy combinations. A pH-responsive nanoplatform containing CaCO was prepared by the double emulsion method, and mitoxantrone (MIT) and celastrol (CEL) were simultaneously encapsulated as immunogenic cell death (ICD) inducers.

Aquaporins (AQPs) are highly conserved small transmembrane proteins that facilitate the transport of water and small solutes across cell membranes. Aquaglyceroporin 7 (AQP7), a significant member of the AQP family, is widely distributed throughout the body. For years, AQP7 was predominantly recognized for its role as a small-molecule transporter, facilitating the passage of small molecular substances.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers investigated the causal relationship between immune cell activity and heart failure (HF), exploring how metabolite levels might influence this connection.
  • Using a two-step Mendelian randomization approach, they analyzed genetic data to identify significant associations between specific immune cells, metabolites, and HF risk.
  • The study found that certain immune cells' influences on HF were mediated by metabolites, highlighting the need for further validation with larger sample sizes to reinforce these findings.

We introduce a one-dimensional (1D) residual convolutional neural network with Partial Least Squares (1D-ResCNN-PLS) to solve the covariance and nonlinearity problems in traditional Chinese medicine dose-effect relationship data. The model combines a 1D convolutional layer with a residual block to extract nonlinear features and employs PLS for prediction. Tested on the Ma Xing Shi Gan Decoction datasets, the model significantly outperformed conventional models, achieving high accuracies, sensitivities, specificities, and AUC values, with considerable reductions in mean square error.

The composition and ratio of unsaturated fatty acids in vegetable oils play a crucial role in determining their overall quality. In this study, we present a corona discharge ionization mass spectrometry (MS) method for the rapid differentiation of vegetable oil varieties and their geographical origins under environmental conditions. Abundant water dimer radical cations, (HO), were generated by the ionization setup, which effectively activated carbon‑carbon double bonds (C=C) to form epoxidized products.

State Key Laboratory of Public Big Data, College of Computer Science and Technology, Guizhou University, Guiyang, 550025, China.

Diagnosing diseases heavily relies on cell pathology images, but the extensive data in each manual identification of relevant cells labor-intensive, especially in regions with a scarcity of qualified healthcare professionals. This study aims to develop an intelligent system to enhance the diagnostic accuracy of cytopathology images by addressing image noise and segmentation issues, thereby improving the efficiency of medical professionals in disease diagnosis. We introduced an innovative system combining a self-supervised algorithm, SDN, for image denoising with data enhancement and image segmentation using the UPerMVit model.

Article Synopsis
  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a challenging inflammatory bowel disease, and this study explores the effectiveness of the natural compound Formononetin (FN), which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, against UC.
  • The researchers used a mouse model of colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and treated them with FN to assess its impact on macrophage activity and gut microbiota.
  • Results showed that FN reduced inflammation and improved gut microbiota balance, but lost effectiveness after gut flora depletion, indicating that FN's benefits rely on healthy gut microbiota.
