Background: The increasing prevalence of myopia among Chinese children and adolescents, especially at younger ages, has emerged as a significant concern in recent years. Pre-myopia is a key period for myopia prevention and control in children and adolescents. Previous studies suggested auricular acupressure (AA) therapy might offer a viable approach to prevent and slow down myopia progression.

Gut microbiota and blood biomarkers in IBD-Related arthritis: insights from mendelian randomization.

With the ongoing rise in the incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), its extraintestinal manifestations have garnered significant attention. IBD-related arthritis is notable for its insidious onset and unpredictability, presenting considerable challenges for clinical diagnosis and management. Factors such as gut microbiota, plasma proteins, inflammatory proteins, and biomarkers found in blood and urine may be closely associated with IBD-related arthritis.

NRF2 is an important transcription factor that regulates redox homeostasis and exerts its anti-oxidative stress and anti-inflammatory response by binding to the ARE to activate and regulate the transcription of downstream protective protein genes, reducing the release of reactive oxygen species. Ferroptosis is a novel iron-dependent, lipid peroxidation-driven cell death mode, and recent studies have shown that ferroptosis is closely associated with acute lung injury/acute respiratory distress syndrome (ALI/ARDS). NRF2 is able to regulate ferroptosis through the regulation of the transcription of its target genes to ameliorate ALI/ARDS.

Effects of (L.) and its combination with irbesartan in the treatment of diabetic nephropathy via the gut-kidney axis.

Background: Clinical observations have recently shown that (L.) in the form of Huangkui capsule (HKC) and in combination with irbesartan (EB) is an effective therapy for diabetic nephropathy (DN) in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The present study aims to explore the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic efficacies of HKC and its combination with EB in DN via the gut-kidney axis.

Background: Thin endometrium (TE) is a common cause of female infertility in clinical practice. Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) therapy becomes a novel treatment for thin endometrium; however, its clinical application remains controversial. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the therapeutic effects of intrauterine autologous PRP infusion in women with thin endometrium through relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs).

Background: Epimedin A (EA) has been shown to suppress extensive osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption, but the effects of EA remain incompletely understood. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of EA on osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption to explore the corresponding signalling pathways.

Methods: Rats were randomly assigned to the sham operation or ovariectomy group, and alendronate was used for the positive control group.

Background: Managing adult degenerative lumbar scoliosis (ADLS) presents a complex challenge, requiring advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Objective: This study aims to evaluate and compare the efficacy and outcomes of oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) and minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) in treating ADLS, with an emphasis on surgical methods, recovery times, and spinal correction results.

Methods: We reviewed 42 patients with ADLS who did not respond to conservative treatments.

Effects of natural products on angiogenesis in melanoma.

Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer and originates from genetic mutations in melanocytes. The disease is multifactorial, but its main cause is overexposure to UV radiation. Currently, available chemotherapy expresses little to no results, which may justify the extensive use of natural products to treat this cancer.

Objective: To investigate blood pressure rhythm (BPR) in deficiency syndrome of hypertension (YDSH) patients and develop a random forest model for predicting YDSH.

Methods: Our study was consistent with technical processes and specification for developing guidelines of Evidence-based Chinese medicine clinical practice (T/CACM 1032-2017). We enrolled 234 patients who had been diagnosed with primary hypertension without antihypertensive medications prior to the enrollment.

In this study, we aimed to enhance the IR-induced immune response and generate reproducible AEs using the anti-alcoholism drug, disulfiram (DSF), complexed with copper (DSF/Cu) to induce tumor ICD. We measured ICD in vitro and in vivo.

Tobacco carcinogens metabolism-related genes (TCMGs) could generate reactive metabolites of tobacco carcinogens, which subsequently contributed to multiple diseases. However, the association between genetic variants in TCMGs and bladder cancer susceptibility remains unclear. In this study, we derived TCMGs from metabolic pathways of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and tobacco-specific nitrosamines, and then explored genetic associations between TCMGs and bladder cancer risk in two populations: a Chinese population of 580 cases and 1101 controls, and a European population of 5930 cases and 5468 controls, along with interaction and joint analyses.

Mitochondria complex I deficiency in Candida albicans arrests the cell cycle at S phase through suppressive TOR and PKA pathways.

How mutations in mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) proteins impact the cell cycle of Candida albicans was investigated in this study. Using genetic null mutants targeting ETC complexes I (CI), III (CIII), and IV (CIV), the cell cycle stages (G0/G1, S phase, and G2/M) were analyzed via fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). Four CI null mutants exhibited distinct alterations, including extended S phase, shortened G2/M population, and a reduction in cells size exceeding 10 µM.

Sigmoido-rectal intussusception anastomosis in the Altemeier procedure for complete rectal prolapse: preliminary results of a new technique.

Purpose: Our research introduces an innovative surgical approach, combining the Altemeier Procedure with Sigmoido-rectal Intussusception Anastomosis, effectively reducing recurrence, minimizing complications, and improving postoperative anal function in rectal prolapse patients.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study, conducted at tertiary referral hospitals including Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine's Affiliated Hospital, Linyi People's Hospital, and Pingyi People's Hospital, examined data from patients undergoing conventional Altemeier surgery or Altemeier combined with Sigmoido-rectal Intussusception Anastomosis. Analyzing hospitalization and follow-up data from January 2009 to December 2022, the study focused on prolapse recurrence, complications, and anal function as primary outcome indicators across these three study centers.

Cigarette smoking was known to accelerate the occurrence and development of bladder cancer by regulating RNA modification. However, the association between the combination of cigarette smoking and RNA modification-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (RNAm-SNPs) and bladder cancer risk remains unclear. In this study, 1681 participants, including 580 cases and 1101 controls, were recruited for genetic association analysis.

Alternative polyadenylation-related genetic variants contribute to bladder cancer risk.

Aberrant alternative polyadenylation (APA) events play an important role in cancers, but little is known about whether APA-related genetic variants contribute to the susceptibility to bladder cancer. Previous genome-wide association study performed APA quantitative trait loci (apaQTL) analyses in bladder cancer, and identified 17 955 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We found that gene symbols of APA affected by apaQTL-associated SNPs were closely correlated with cancer signaling pathways, high mutational burden, and immune infiltration.

Disrupted topologic efficiency of brain functional connectome in de novo Parkinson's disease with depression.

Growing evidence supports that depression in Parkinson's disease (PD) depends on disruptions in specific neural networks rather than regional dysfunction. According to the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data, the study attempted to decipher the alterations in the topological properties of brain networks in de novo depression in PD (DPD). The study also explored the neural network basis for depressive symptoms in PD.

Effect of short-term compression therapy after thermal ablation for varicose veins: study protocol for a prospective, multicenter, non-inferiority, randomized controlled trial.

Background: For patients with varicose veins, the goal is to relieve pain and swelling, reduce the severity of edema, improve skin changes, and heal ulcers associated with venous disease. Compression therapy is the cornerstone of their management. Several studies have shown that wearing an elastic bandage for the first 24 h and then a compression stocking for a week can effectively reduce the pain after thermal ablation.

Anti-CD3 monoclonal antibodies in treatment of type 1 diabetes: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Purpose: This meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of anti-CD3 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) for type 1 diabetes.

Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase and Cochrane until 23 February 2023 for randomized controlled trials that compared anti-CD3 mAbs with placebo in type 1 diabetes. The primary outcome was the area under the curve (AUC) of C-peptide, daily insulin dose or HbA.

Comparing the effects of GBA variants and onset age on clinical features and progression in Parkinson's disease.

Objective: Glucosylceramidase (GBA) variants and onset age significantly affect clinical phenotype and progression in Parkinson's disease (PD). The current study compared clinical characteristics at baseline and cognitive and motor progression over time among patients having GBA-related PD (GBA-PD), early-onset idiopathic PD (early-iPD), and late-onset idiopathic PD (late-iPD).

Methods: We recruited 88 GBA-PD, 167 early-iPD, and 488 late-iPD patients in this study.
