RBP4 promotes denervation-induced muscle atrophy through STRA6-dependent pathway.

J Cachexia Sarcopenia Muscle

August 2024

Department of Geriatrics, Zhongda Hospital, School of Medicine, Southeast University, No. 87 Dingjiaqiao, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

Backgrounds: Fat infiltration of skeletal muscle has been recognized as a common feature of many degenerative muscle disorders. Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) is an adipokine that has been demonstrated to be correlated with the presence and severity of sarcopenia in the elderly. However, the exact role and the underlying mechanism of RBP4 in muscle atrophy remains unclear.

A novel predictive model for optimizing diabetes screening in older adults.

J Diabetes Investig

October 2024

Department of Integrated Service and Management, Jiangsu Province Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China.

Introduction: The fasting blood glucose test is widely used for diabetes screening. However, it may fail to detect early-stage diabetes characterized by elevated postprandial glucose levels. Hence, we developed and internally validated a nomogram to predict the diabetes risk in older adults with normal fasting glucose levels.

Phase III multi-country studies (ZOE-50/70) demonstrated that the adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) was well tolerated and prevented herpes zoster (HZ) in healthy ≥ 50-year-olds, with a vaccine efficacy (VE) > 90% across age groups. These pivotal trials did not enroll participants from mainland China where RZV is licensed, therefore similar clinical data are missing for this population. In this phase IV observer-blind study (NCT04869982) conducted between 2021 and 2023 in China, immunocompetent and medically stable ≥ 50-year-olds were randomized 1:1 to receive two RZV or placebo doses, 2 months apart.

Background: Sarcopenia is characterized by progressive loss of muscle mass and function due to aging. DNA methylation has been identified to play important roles in the dysfunction of skeletal muscle. The aim of our present study was to explore the whole blood sample-based methylation changes of skeletal muscle function-related factors in patients with sarcopenia.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a health issue consisting of multiple metabolic abnormalities. The impact of exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on MetS and its components remains uncertain. This study aimed to assess the associations of individual urinary metabolites of VOC (mVOCs) and mVOC mixtures with MetS and its components among the general adult population in the United States.

Background: The aspartate aminotransferase/alanine aminotransferase (AST/ALT) ratio, also known as De Ritis ratio, has been reportedly associated with malnutrition which plays a crucial role in sarcopenia. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between AST/ALT ratio and sarcopenia in the Chinese community-dwelling elderly.

Methods: A cross-sectional study with 2751 participants (1343 men and 1408 women) aged ≥60 years was performed.

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are the major sources of contaminants discharged into downstream water bodies. Profiling the contaminants in effluent of WWTPs is crucial to assess the potential eco-risks toward downstream organisms. To this end, this study investigated the contaminants in effluent of 10 WWTPs locating in 10 cities of Yangtze River delta region of China by suspected screening analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • Older adults (60+) show weaker immune responses to two doses of COVID-19 vaccines; a study tests if a different type of vaccine (Convidecia) can improve immunity when given as a booster after an inactivated vaccine (CoronaVac).
  • The trial involved 199 participants aged 60+, comparing the effects of a third dose of either Convidecia or CoronaVac after receiving two doses of CoronaVac, assessing antibody levels and side effects.
  • Results indicated that the heterologous booster (Convidecia) significantly increased neutralizing antibodies against various COVID-19 variants compared to the homologous booster (CoronaVac), demonstrating better efficacy in older adults.

Background: Serum creatinine is associated with cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular events, however, the relationship between serum creatinine levels and cardiovascular risk is not well established in hypertensive population in Jiangsu Province. We aimed to evaluate the association of serum creatinine levels with traditional cardiovascular risk factors and 10-year cardiovascular risk in a Chinese hypertensive population.

Methods: Participants were patients with hypertension registered and enrolled in health service centers in 5 counties or districts from January 2019 to May 2020 in Jiangsu Province of China followed strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, demographics as well as clinical indicators and disease history and lifestyle were collected.

Biotransformation of emerging contaminants (ECs) is of importance in various natural and engineered systems to eliminate the adverse effects of ECs toward organisms. In wastewater, structurally similar ECs may transform through similar reactions triggered by common enzymes. However, the transformation pattern for them was scarcely studied.

To summarize and analyse of literature on the susceptibility genes of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) , and the key genes were screened and obtained by bioinformatics method, so as to provide reference for the prevention research of NIHL. In September 2021, Based on CNKI, NCBI Pubmed database and Web of Science database, this paper conducted bibliometric analysis and bioinformatics analysis on the genetic literature related to the susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss from 1999 to 2020. Endnote X9 software and the WPS office software were used for bibliometric analysis, and online software STRING and Cytoscape software were used for bioinformatics analysis.

In this article, the degradation of 4, 4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol (bisphenol AF, BPAF) by ozone was studied and toxicity of the degradation products was evaluated. Kinetic studies showed that acidic conditions were more conducive to the ozone degradation of BPAF than alkaline conditions. In the presence of common anions, Br and SO promoted the degradation of BPAF, whereas NO, NO, HSO inhibited the degradation, and the other anions and cations had no significant effect.
