The intestine is highly vulnerable to various factors and has been proposed as a promising determinant for poultry health. Phytogenic or plant-derived feed additives can be used to help improve intestinal health. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of DNJ on the antioxidative parameters, including malondialdehyde (MDA), total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, and TNF-α), in plasma and intestinal tissues using layers supplemented with or without the DNJ extract of mulberry leaves (DNJ-E) via the ELISA method.

Objective: Tibetan chickens, which have unique adaptations to extreme high-altitude environments, exhibit phenotypic and physiological characteristics that are distinct from those of lowland chickens. However, the mechanisms underlying hypoxic adaptation in the liver of chickens remain unknown.
Methods: RNA-sequencing (RNA-Seq) technology was used to assess the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in hypoxia adaptation in highland chickens (native Tibetan chicken [HT]) and lowland chickens (Langshan chicken [LS], Beijing You chicken [BJ], Qingyuan Partridge chicken [QY], and Chahua chicken [CH]).

Quercetin (Que), widely found in a huge variety of plants, plays important roles in ovarian function. However, to data, there have been no reports about Que regulating granulosa cells (GCs) in prehierarchical follicles in chicken. Herein, GCs from follicles diameter from 4 to 8 mm in chicken were treated by Que in vitro culture to investigate how Que exerts its effect on follicular development.

Autophagy plays an important role in the pluripotency and differentiation of stem cells. Transcriptome data showed that the autophagy genes and were significantly upregulated in primordial germ cells (PGCs). The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome (KEGG) results showed that the lysosome signaling pathway, which is related to autophagy, was significantly enriched in PGCs.

Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of most common diseases in the world. Recently, alternative splicing (AS) has been reported to play a key role in NAFLD processes in mammals. Ducks can quickly form fatty liver similar to human NAFLD after overfeeding and restore to normal liver in a short time, suggesting that ducks are an excellent model to unravel molecular mechanisms of lipid metabolism for NAFLD.

RyhB-1 and RyhB-2 are small non-coding RNAs in that act as regulators of iron homeostasis by sensing the environmental iron concentration. Expressions of RyhB paralogs from Typhimurium are increased within microphages. RyhB paralogs restrain the growth of Typhimurium in RAW264.

AmpC β-lactamase genes are clinically important because they often confer resistance to most β-lactams other than 4th-generation cephalosporins and carbapenems. However, traditional and existing detection methods are expensive, labor-intensive and range-limited. We established an efficient multiplex PCR method to simultaneously identify six families of C β-lactamase genes, ACC, EBC, CIT, DHA, MOX and FOX, and evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of this assay.

The semen quality of breeder cocks profoundly impacted the numbers of matched layer hens and the economic benefits of the poultry industry. Adequacy and balance of poultry nutrition, especially the energy provision, critically modulated the reproductive potential of breeder cocks, however, the underlying mechanism was still unclear. For the purpose of this study, a total of 90 yellow-feathered 13-week-old roosters with the same age in days and similar body weight (1,437 ± 44.

High-resolution and efficient typing for the bacterial pathogen is essential for tracking the sources, detecting or diagnosing variants, and conducting a risk assessment. However, a systematic in-field investigation of Salmonella along the food chain has not been documented. This study assessed 12 typing methods, such as antimicrobial-resistance (AMR) gene profile typing, Core Genome Multilocus Sequence Typing (cgMLST), and CRISPR multi-virulence locus sequence typing (CRISPR-MVLST), to evaluate their effectiveness for use in routine monitoring of foodborne Salmonella transmission along the poultry production chain.

Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC), which has potential zoonotic risk, can cause severe systemic infections such as septicemia and meningitis in poultry. Colibactin is a hybrid non-ribosomal peptide/polyketide secondary metabolite produced by bacteria, which induces double-strand DNA breaks and chromosome instability in eukaryotic cells. ClbA is a 4'-phosphopantetheinyl transferase (PPTase) that is essential for colibactin and plays a role in siderophore synthesis.

The objective of this study was to determine meat quality distributions and assess hardness distributions in raw and cooked breast fillets with the woody breast (WB) condition, in addition to evaluating the relationship between water properties and WB severity. A total of 90 breast fillets were collected and categorized as normal (NORM), mild (MILD) and severe (SEV). Breast weight, drip loss, compression measurements, cook loss, shear and texture profile analysis (TPA) values were measured for each sample by fillet location (cranial to caudal) and sampling depth (cranial-superficial, cranial-internal, middle-superficial, and middle-internal) in the raw and cooked meat state.

In total, 636 genomes (43 populations) were sequenced from chickens of American, Chinese, Indonesian, and European origin. Evaluated populations included wild junglefowl, rural indigenous chickens, breeds that have been widely used to improve modern western poultry populations and current commercial stocks bred for efficient meat and egg production.

Wooden breast (WB) is a muscle disorder affecting modern commercial broiler chickens that leads to a palpable firm pectoralis major muscle and causes severe reduction in meat quality, resulting in substantial economic losses for the poultry industry. Most studies have focused on the regulatory mechanisms underlying this defect with respect to the gene and protein expression levels as well as the levels of metabolites. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play critical roles in human muscular disorders, such as the Duchenne muscular dystrophy, by regulating the muscle regeneration or fibrosis processes.

Although the genetic foundation of chicken body feather color has been extensively explored, that of tail feather color remains poorly understood. In the present study, we used a synthetic chicken dwarf line (DW), derived from hybrids bred between a black tail chicken breed, Rhode Island Red (RIR), and a white tail breed, dwarf layer (DL), to investigate the genetic rules associated white/black tail color. Even though the body feathers are predominantly red, the DW line still comprises individuals with black or white tails after more than 10 generations of self-crossing and selection for the body feather color.

Mottled eggs in layer chickens are gaining increasing attention because of the economic impact on the egg industry caused by the reduced sale value of commodity eggs. However, the genetic architecture underlying mottled eggs is not well understood. The genetic architecture underlying the mottled egg trait was investigated using genome-wide association studies (GWAS) by high-density arrays, using a total of 407 pink eggs and 799 blue eggs from an F resource population generated by crossing Dongxiang Blue-shelled and White Leghorn chickens.

The naturally isolated avian coronavirus infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) generally cannot replicate in chicken kidney (CK) cells. To explore the molecular mechanism of IBV adapting to CK cells, a series of recombinant viruses were constructed by chimerizing the S genes of CK cell-adapted strain H120 and non-adapted strain IBYZ. The results showed that the S2 subunit determines the difference in cell tropism of the two strains.

Although domestic ducks have been important poultry species throughout human history, their origin remains enigmatic, with mallards and/or Chinese spot-billed ducks being proposed as the direct wild ancestor(s) of domestic ducks. Here, we analyzed 118 whole genomes from mallard, Chinese spot-billed, and domestic ducks to reconstruct their evolutionary history. We found pervasive introgression patterns among these duck populations.
