Hypervirulent (hvKp) has attracted increasing attention in recent years. Diabetes and serotype K1 or K2 are risk factors for invasive liver abscess syndrome including liver abscesses and the metastatic complications such as bacteremia, meningitis, endophthalmitis, and necrotizing fasciitis. Simultaneous infections of the liver, lungs, prostate, brain, and eyes are exceedingly rare.

J Orthop Surg Res

October 2024

Orthopedics Department, Jiangshan People's Hospital, Jiangshan, 324199, China.

Aims: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a common degenerative joint disease characterized by pain and functional limitations. Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the effectiveness of bilateral locking plate (BLLP) fixation compared to unilateral locking plate (ULLP) fixation for managing unstable osteoporotic supracondylar femoral fractures (UOSFF), especially in cases involving bone defects.
  • Experimental models were utilized to apply different types of locking plate fixations, revealing that BLLP results in better stress distribution under load, indicating stronger stability than ULLP.
  • The research concludes that BLLP fixation is crucial in specific scenarios: when fracture lines are at sharp angles, of type "/", or when there are significant bone defects.

This study aimed to explore the role of lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) in adipose browning. Mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) were treated with differentiation induction reagents and Perifosine (Akt inhibitor), with the transfection of Atg5, short hairpin RNA targeting LBP (shLBP), and Atg5 (shAtg5). The expression levels of LBP, inflammatory markers , brown fat markers, lipid metabolism marker, autophagy markers, insulin signaling-related molecules , p-mTOR, mTOR, p-Akt, Akt, p-PI3K, and PI3K were quantified or determined by Western blot, qRT-PCR, and immunofluorescence assay.

Background: Venous air embolism (VAE) is a life-threatening event characterized as a series of clinical features of the disease caused by gas entering the venous circulation in the body.

Case Presentation: A 72-year-old male patient with an ankle fracture after trauma was admitted, and complained of chest pain and dyspnea after the ankle fracture resection and internal fixation. His heart rate and blood pressure dropped, and the patient was diagnosed with VAE according to a chest x-ray and clinical features.

Background: There is no unified standard to predict postoperative survival in patients with tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC), hence the urgency to develop a model to accurately predict the prognosis of these patients.

Aim: To develop and validate nomograms for predicting overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) of patients with TSCC.

Methods: A cohort of 3454 patients with TSCC from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was used to develop nomograms; another independent cohort of 203 patients with TSCC from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine, was used for external validation.

Association of continuous glucose monitoring-derived time in range with major amputation risk in diabetic foot osteomyelitis patients undergoing amputation.

Ther Adv Endocrinol Metab

May 2022

Department of Endocrinology, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital, 3 East Qingchun Road, Hangzhou 310016, China.

Objective: The metrics generated from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), such as time in range (TIR), are strongly correlated with diabetes complications. This study explored the association of perioperative CGM-derived metrics with major amputation risk in patients with diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO).

Methods: This study recruited 55 DFO patients with grade 3-4 wounds according to the Wagner Diabetic Foot Ulcer Classification System, all of whom underwent CGM for 5 days during the perioperative period.

Hereditary hearing loss is highly heterogeneous. Despite over 120 non-syndromic deafness genes have been identified, there are still some of novel genes and variants being explored. In the study, we investigated 105 Chinese Han children with non-syndromic, prelingual, severe-profound hearing loss by whole-exome sequencing on DNA samples.

Features of a simvastatin-loaded multi-layered co-electrospun barrier membrane for guided bone regeneration.

Exp Ther Med

July 2021

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, Zhejiang 310003, P.R. China.

A novel tri-layer membrane consisting of polycaprolactone (PCL) fibrous sheets and structured nanofibers with a gelatin (Gt) shell and a simvastatin-containing PCL core (PCL-Gt/PCL-simvastatin membrane) was prepared. The soft external layer comprised of Gt/PCL-simvastatin, the external layer of PCL and the middle layer of both microfilaments, interwoven together. The membrane was designed to promote osteoinduction and act as a barrier against cells but not against water and molecules in order to promote guided bone regeneration.

Background: Hepatolithiasis commonly occurs in the bile duct proximal to the confluence of the right and left hepatic ducts, regardless of the coexistence of gallstones in gallbladder or the common bile duct. Clinical research proves that minimally invasive surgery is effective in the treatment of hepatolithiasis. Although previous meta-analysis also shows that it could reduce intraoperative bleeding and blood transfusion, and shorten hospital stay time, there are few meta-analyses on its long-term efficacy.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) as a global health concern is closely related to inflammation and oxidation. Isoliquiritigenin (ISL), a natural flavonoid compound, has been demonstrated to inhibit inflammation in macrophages. Herein, we investigated the effect of ISL in protecting against the injury in STZ-induced type 1 DN and in high glucose-induced NRK-52E cells.
