Identification of novel pQTL-SNPs associated with lung adenocarcinoma risk: A multi-stage study.

Cancer Med

September 2024

Department of Epidemiology, School of Public Health, Nantong University, Nantong, Jiangsu, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the link between protein quantitative trait loci (pQTL-SNPs) and lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) risk by analyzing plasma from female LUAD patients and healthy controls, along with tumor tissues.
  • It identifies 7 significant pQTL-SNPs related to altered LUAD risk, showing decreased levels of certain proteins which may act as tumor suppressors in patients' plasma and tumor tissues.
  • The findings suggest that mutations in 4 specific pQTL-SNPs can affect the expression of target proteins (BST1, NRP1, and APOH), influencing the risk of developing LUAD either by promoting or inhibiting tumorigenesis.

Background: Pulmonary fibrosis is one of the main reasons for the high mortality rate among acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) patients. Mesenchymal stromal cell-derived microvesicles (MSC-MVs) have been shown to exert antifibrotic effects in lung diseases.

Aim: To investigate the effects and mechanisms of MSC-MVs on pulmonary fibrosis in ARDS mouse models.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify new plasma protein biomarkers for lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) through proteomics analysis and validation in LUAD patients and healthy controls.
  • GPI and PGD were found to be upregulated in LUAD patients' plasma, with a significant correlation between their plasma and tissue levels, as well as a negative correlation to tumor blood vessel normalization.
  • Findings suggest GPI and PGD could serve as potential diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers, helping to assess the risk of metastasis and tumor severity in LUAD patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Elderly patients with lymphoproliferative diseases, particularly those with lymphoma, are at a higher risk of severe COVID-19 infections, with a significant percentage being classified as severe or critical during the Omicron outbreak in China.
  • Factors such as age over 70, multiple comorbidities, aggressive lymphoma, and recent anti-lymphoma treatment were strongly linked to worse outcomes in these patients.
  • Interestingly, continuous treatment with BTK inhibitors appeared to reduce the severity of COVID-19 infections, while prior use of CD20 antibody treatments increased the risk of severe outcomes.

Reactive Oxygen Species Scavenging Injectable Hydrogel Potentiates the Therapeutic Potential of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Skin Flap Regeneration.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

April 2024

Microelectronics Industry Research Institute, College of Physics Science and Technology, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou 225009, P. R. China.

Cell-based therapies offer tremendous potential for skin flap regeneration. However, the hostile microenvironment of the injured tissue adversely affects the longevity and paracrine effects of the implanted cells, severely reducing their therapeutic effectiveness. Here, an injectable hydrogel (nGk) with reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capability, which can amplify the cell viability and functions of encapsulated mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), is employed to promote skin flap repair.

Hyperthyroidism is associated with a number of heart diseases, and it may aggravate previous cardiac problems or cause new ones, such as hyperthyroid cardiopathy. Cases of hyperthyroidism presenting with coronary vasospasm are rarely reported. Herein, we present a case of a 54-year male patient with recurrent left chest pain for 2 months.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how certain genetic variations (SNPs) affect alternative polyadenylation (APA) and their relationship with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) risk.
  • In a two-phase case-control study, researchers identified specific SNPs related to NSCLC, finding that the variant G allele of rs10138506 was significantly linked to an increased risk of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD).
  • Functional analysis showed that this SNP influenced the length of the mRNA's 3′UTR for the CHURC1 gene, suggesting a potential mechanism by which it elevates LUAD risk, warranting further research.

To explore the risk factors associated with septic cardiomyopathy and establish a predictive model of the disease based on left ventricular global longitudinal strain (LV GLS). Data from sepsis patients without a history of cardiac dysfunction who were treated in the Critical Care Department of the Northern Jiangsu People's Hospital from September, 2019 to January, 2021 were included in the analysis. The LV GLS was measured by echocardiography within 72 hours and the patients were divided into a septic myocardiopathy group (LV GLS>-17%) and a normal cardiac function group (LV GLS≤-17%).

Department of Critical Care Medicine, Jiangdu People's Hospital of Yangzhou, Jiangdu People's Hospital Affiliated to Medical College of Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, Jiangsu, PR China. Electronic address:

Objectives: The 2018 Surviving Sepsis Campaign (SSC) recommends rapid administration of 30 mL/kg crystalloid fluids for hypotension or lactate ≥4 mmol/L in patients with septic shock; however, there is limited evidence to support this recommendation. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between initial fluid resuscitation doses and prognosis in patients with septic shock.

Methods: This was a multicenter prospective observational study of adult patients with septic shock who were admitted to four intensive care units (ICUs) in a total of three Jiangsu Province teaching hospitals over a 3-year span from May 8, 2018, to June 15, 2021.
