Background: Rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) plays an important role during transbronchial sampling, providing an intraoperative cytopathologic evaluation. However, the shortage of cytopathologists limits its wide application. This study aims to develop a deep learning model to automatically analyze ROSE cytological images.

A Randomized Comparison Between Anterior Talofibular Ligament Repair Using Broström Operation with and without an Internal Brace.

J Foot Ankle Surg

June 2024

Foot and Ankle Surgeon, resident, Department of Orthopedics, Ruian City People's Hospital, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • * Nineteen patients underwent the repair with an internal brace (IB), while eighteen patients had it without the brace (TB), and both groups were evaluated using the Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) and Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM).
  • * The IB group showed significantly better sports activity scores (90.63) compared to the TB group (83.33), but both groups had similar daily life scores, and the IB group's overall medical expenses were higher.

Introduction: Intestinal barrier dysfunction is a pivotal factor in sepsis progression. The mechanosensitive ion channel Piezo1 is associated with barrier function; however, its role in sepsis-induced intestinal barrier dysfunction remains poorly understood.

Methods: The application of cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) modeling was performed on both mice of the wild-type (WT) variety and those with Villin-Piezo1 genetic makeup to assess the barrier function using in vivo FITC-dextran permeability measurements and immunofluorescence microscopy analysis of tight junctions (TJs) and apoptosis levels.

Objective: To study the histopathological staging of atrophic lesions of the gastric mucosa.

Methods: Histology and immunohistochemistry were used to closely examine 2144 specimens of atrophic gastric mucosa that were taken from endoscopic biopsies.

Results: When the gastric mucosa epithelium is affected by infection, chemical stimulation, immune factors, genetic factors, and other factors, it may cause an atrophy of gastric mucosa epithelium and a decrease in the number of glands, intestinal metaplasia, hyperplasia of smooth muscle fibers, and atrophy of stem cells in the proliferative zone.

Background: In head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) with human papillomavirus (HPV)-negative, deregulation of cell cycle is partly due to inactivation of p16INK4 and overexpression of cyclin D1. Here we investigated the in vitro and in vivo effects of the CDK4/6 inhibitor Palbociclib alone or combined with EGFR inhibitor Cetuximab in HNSCC.

Methods And Results: CCK-8, soft agar assay, colony formation assay, wound healing assay and transwell assay, β-galactosidase assay, western blotting, and cell-derived xenografts were used to investigated the in vitro and in vivo activity of drugs.

Several studies have reported that baseline symptom severity in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) is associated with the efficacy of antipsychotic medication. Overweight/obesity is common in SCZ and has also been reported to be correlated with therapeutic response to antipsychotics. This study aimed to evaluate whether baseline body mass index (BMI) and disease severity were associated with improvements in negative symptoms in patients with first-episode and medication-naïve (FEMN) SCZ.

Background: Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma is the second most common primary liver cancer after hepatocellular carcinoma with an increasing incidence worldwide. Surgical resection is still the only potential cure, and survival rates are dismal due to disease relapse after resection and/or metastatic disease. Positive resection margins are associated with recurrence, with conflicting studies regarding the benefits of wide resection margins to reduce recurrence rates.

Prognostic factors of poor postoperative outcomes in gastrectomies.

Front Surg

December 2023

Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery, Medical Centre University Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany.

Background: Gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide and is the third most common cause of cancer related death. Improving postoperative results by understanding risk factors which impact outcomes is important. The current study aimed to compare immediate perioperative outcomes following gastrectomy.

Introduction: Early gastric cancer with current Helicobacter pylori infection (HpC-EGC) is common, but it is still unclear whether H. pylori eradication therapy (Hp-ET) or endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) should be performed first. We evaluated Hp-ETs short-term effects on horizontal boundary delineations of HpC-EGC in ESD.

Aims: This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PARP inhibitor therapy in advanced ovarian cancer and identify the optimal treatment for the survival of patients.

Background: The diversity of PARP inhibitors makes clinicians confused about the optimal strategy and the most effective BRCAm mutation-based regimen for the survival of patients with advanced ovarian cancer.

Objectives: The objective of this study is to compare the effects of various PARP inhibitors alone or in combination with other agents in advanced ovarian cancer.

Objective: To explore the early onset, development and histological features of gastric signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC).

Methods: Three hundred and sixty-two patients with differentiated adenocarcinoma with signet-ring cells were enrolled. Histomorphological and immunohistochemical features and patterns of the specimens were observed in detail.

Background And Objectives: The distribution of coronary resting blood flow is critical for accurately calculating the computed tomography (CT) angiography-derived fractional flow reserve (FFR). However, the diagnostic accuracy of FFR calculated by the fixed exponents between two risk factors and coronary resting blood flow, including myocardial mass and diameter of the coronary artery branch, was insufficient compared with invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR). In this study, we proposed the individualized distribution of coronary resting blood flow based on coronary ultrasound blood flow measurement, to improve the diagnostic accuracy of FFR calculation.

Objective: To investigate the feasibility and efficiency of automatic segmentation of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) images in renal tumors by convolutional neural network (CNN) based models and their further application in radiomic analysis.

Materials And Methods: From 94 pathologically confirmed renal tumor cases, 3355 CEUS images were extracted and randomly divided into training set (3020 images) and test set (335 images). According to the histological subtypes of renal cell carcinoma, the test set was further split into clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) set (225 images), renal angiomyolipoma (AML) set (77 images) and set of other subtypes (33 images).

BMC Endocr Disord

May 2023

Department of Endocrinology, Shanghai Xuhui Central Hospital/Xuhui Hospital, Fudan University, 966 Huaihai Middle Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai, 200031, China.

Background: Hyperhomocysteinemia has been linked with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The present study investigated whether homocysteine (Hcy) serum levels might serve as a marker for the advancement of diabetic nephropathy (DN).

Methods: Clinical and laboratory indicators including Hcy, vitamin D (VD), urine protein, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and the urinary protein/creatinine ratio in subjects > 65 years with DN (n = 1,845), prediabetes (n = 1,180) and in a non-diabetes (control) group (n = 28,720) were analyzed.
