Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Teduglutide Treatment in Patients with Short Bowel Syndrome in Slovakia-Multicenter Real-World Study.

(1) We present the first real-world-data study on teduglutide-treated SBS patients in the Slovak Republic and the first study to enable the comparison of the effects of teduglutide treatment between the adult and pediatric populations. (2) This was a non-interventional retrospective cohort study of adult and pediatric SBS patients treated with teduglutide. Primary and secondary endpoints were the results of teduglutide use at 12 weeks and 6 months after the initiation of treatment, compared to baseline.

The role of hyperleptinaemia and low values of interleukin 10 in de novo DSA production after kidney transplantation.

Background: White adipose tissue secretes a number of peptide hormones. The aim of this paper was to determine the role of leptin, adiponectin and interleukin-10 and interleukin-6 on the development of graft rejection in protocol biopsy after kidney transplantation.

Methods: In a prospective analysis (n = 104), we monitored the values of leptin, adiponectin, IL-6, and IL-10 prior to the transplantation and in the 3rd month after the transplantation.

Desmoplasia in non-small cell lung carcinomas is associated with low programmed death-ligand 1 expression and the absence of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes.

Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) is the most widely utilized predictive marker used to identify non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) patients most suitable for immunotherapy approaches. The relationship between PD-L1 expression, the presence of CD8+ T cells, and other clinicopathological characteristics of NSCLC patients has not been elucidated yet. In this retrospective study, we immunohistochemically determined PD-L1 expression (using clone 22C3) and CD8+ T cell count (using clone c8/144B) in surgical resection specimens from 698 advanced NSCLC patients.

Cytokines in Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Step Towards Earlier Detection and Targeted Therapy.

Symptoms of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) have typically late onset and correlate with its advanced stage. No biomarkers of RCC are currently available. The present study analyzed the immuno-biochemical profile of RCC by measuring the levels of cytokines engaged in RCC pathophysiology.

Effects of Inhalation of STIM-Orai Antagonist SKF 96365 on Ovalbumin-Induced Airway Remodeling in Guinea Pigs.

Airway remodeling (AR) consists of wall thickening and hyperreactivity. STIM (stromal interaction molecule) and Orai protein pathways mediate extracellular Ca signals involved in AR. This study aims to define the effects on AR of the STIM-Orai antagonist SKF 96365 given by inhalation in three increasing doses in ovalbumin-induced AR.

Flow Cytometry Panel-Reactive Antibody Screening of Anti-HLA Antibodies in the Waiting List Significantly Reduces the Occurrence of Acute Rejection After Kidney Transplantation.

Introduction: The presence of preformed HLA-reactive antibodies in recipient serum before transplantation has long been recognized as a prominent risk factor for a generally worse graft outcome. Screening and identification of HLA antibodies can be used to stratify patients into high- and low-risk categories.

Materials And Methods: We determined patients' anti-HLA antibodies using flow cytometry panel-reactive antibody (flowPRA) screening, specifying more than 5% after positive screening.

Complications of liver resection in geriatric patients.

Unlabelled: Introduction and aims. Liver resection is the treatment of choice for many primary and secondary liver diseases. Most studies in the elderly have reported resection of primary and secondary liver tumors, especially hepatocellular carcinoma and colorectal metastatic cancer.

Treatment of Ormond Disease and Idiopathic Membranous Glomerulonephritis by using Rituximab.

Treatment of retroperitoneal fibrosis usually involves corticosteroids with or without other immunomodulating medications or tamoxifen.  Rituximab, a monoclonal antibody that specifically targets CD20 on the surface of B-cells, is effective in achieving complete remission of proteinuria in patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy. We describe a case of a 45 years old man with idiopathic membranous glomerulonephritis (with proteinuria of more than 30 grams/24 hours) and simultaneously with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (with large number of cells CD20 in the histologic image).

Costs analysis of the treatment of imported malaria.

Background: To document the status of imported malaria infections and estimate the costs of treating of patients hospitalized with the diagnosis of imported malaria in the Slovak Republic during 2003 to 2008.

Case Study: Calculating and comparing the direct and indirect costs of treatment of patients diagnosed with imported malaria (ICD-10: B50 - B54) who used and not used chemoprophylaxis. The target sample included 19 patients diagnosed with imported malaria from 2003 to 2008, with 11 whose treatment did not include chemoprophylaxis and eight whose treatment did.

Validation of the Slovakian version of the P-QOL questionnaire.

Introduction And Hypothesis: This study aimed to validate the Slovakian version of the prolapse quality-of-life (P-QOL) questionnaire.

Methods: The P-QOL questionnaire was translated into the Slovakian language and administered to women recruited from a urogynecology outpatient clinic at a tertiary referral teaching hospital. After completing a questionnaire, all women were examined in supine position using the Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP-Q) Quantification system.

Electrolytic production of aluminium in former Czechoslovakia started in the year 1953 in the Žiar valley in the central Slovakia. However, till 1995 the hygienic conditions for health protection were not met in the factory. It underwent a reconstruction afterwards.
