The prognostic impact of BMI in patients with HR+/HER2- advanced breast cancer: a study of the SONABRE registry.

Purpose: This study determines the prognostic impact of body mass index (BMI) in patients with hormone receptor-positive/human epidermal growth factor receptor-2-negative (HR+/HER2-) advanced (i.e., metastatic) breast cancer (ABC).

Multicenter evaluation of the BIOFIRE Joint Infection Panel for the detection of bacteria, yeast, and AMR genes in synovial fluid samples.

The bioMérieux BIOFIRE Joint Infection (JI) Panel is a multiplex diagnostic test for the simultaneous and rapid (~1 h) detection of 39 potential pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes directly from synovial fluid (SF) samples. Thirty-one species or groups of microorganisms are included in the kit, as well as several AMR genes. This study, performed to evaluate the BIOFIRE JI Panel for regulatory clearance, provides data from a multicenter evaluation of 1,544 prospectively collected residual SF samples with performance compared to standard-of-care (SOC) culture for organisms or polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing for AMR genes.

Prospective multicentre study of indications for surgery in patients with idiopathic acute pancreatitis following endoscopic ultrasonography (PICUS).

Background: Cholecystectomy in patients with idiopathic acute pancreatitis (IAP) is controversial. A randomized trial found cholecystectomy to reduce the recurrence rate of IAP but did not include preoperative endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). As EUS is effective in detecting gallstone disease, cholecystectomy may be indicated only in patients with gallstone disease.

Trends and overall survival after combined liver resection and thermal ablation of colorectal liver metastases: a nationwide population-based propensity score-matched study.

Background: In colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) patients, combination of liver resection and ablation permit a more parenchymal-sparing approach. This study assessed trends in use of combined resection and ablation, outcomes, and overall survival (OS).

Methods: This population-based study included all CRLM patients who underwent liver resection between 2014 and 2022.

External Validity and Consistency over Time of Patient Segmentation Based on Disease Acceptance and Perceived Control in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Background And Aims: The patient segmentation model based on disease acceptance and perceived control may guide personalized care in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We aimed to investigate the external validity of the segmentation model and its consistency over time.

Methods: This is a multicenter longitudinal cohort study of adult IBD patients with questionnaires on disease acceptance and perceived control (6-items, 7-point Likert scale) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) (Short IBD questionnaire, range 10-70).

Therapeutic drug monitoring of methotrexate in patients with Crohn's disease.

Background: Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) has the potential to improve efficacy and diminish side effects. Measuring methotrexate-polyglutamate (MTX-PG) in erythrocytes might enable TDM for methotrexate in patients with Crohn's disease (CD).

Aim: To investigate the relationship between MTX-PGs and methotrexate drug survival, efficacy and toxicity METHODS: In a multicentre prospective cohort study, patients with CD starting subcutaneous methotrexate without biologics were included and followed for 12 months.

The course of self-perceived cognitive functioning among patients with lymphoma and the co-occurrence with fatigue and psychological distress.

Purpose: To investigate the proportion of patients with lymphoma with persistent clinically relevant cognitive impairment, and its relation to  treatment, fatigue, and psychological distress.

Methods: Patients with diffuse-large-B-cell-lymphoma (DLBCL), follicular-lymphoma (FL), and chronic-lymphocytic-leukemia (CLL)/small-lymphocytic-lymphoma (SLL), diagnosed between 2004-2010 or 2015-2019, were followed up to 8 years post-diagnosis. Sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained from the Netherlands Cancer Registry and the Population-based HAematological Registry for Observational Studies.

Apathy Symptoms, Physical and Cognitive Function, Health-Related Quality of Life, and Mortality in Older Patients With CKD: A Longitudinal Observational Study.

Rationale & Objective: Apathy reflects diminished motivation, goal-directed behavior, and emotions, as well as less engagement in social interactions. Apathy overlaps with depression and is associated with cognitive decline. In the older individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD), both depression and cognitive impairments are common, but apathy symptoms have been underreported.

Greater male variability in daily energy expenditure develops through puberty.

There is considerably greater variation in metabolic rates between men than between women, in terms of basal, activity and total (daily) energy expenditure (EE). One possible explanation is that EE is associated with male sexual characteristics (which are known to vary more than other traits) such as musculature and athletic capacity. Such traits might be predicted to be most prominent during periods of adolescence and young adulthood, when sexual behaviour develops and peaks.

Comparison of Supraflex Cruz 60 μm Versus Ultimaster Tansei 80 μm Stent Struts in High Bleeding Risk PCI Patients: Study design and Rational of Compare 60/80 HBR trial.

Up to 45% of patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) may have a high bleeding risk (HBR), depending on the bleeding risk definition. This condition is often associated with an enhanced risk of thrombotic events with a negative impact on short- and long-term outcomes, making the choice of an appropriate antithrombotic regimen after PCI particularly challenging. Advances in stent technologies, in which the introduction of newer generations of thinner strut drug-eluting stents (DES), have significantly reduced the rate of thrombotic complications and may justify a shorter dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) duration.

Ixazomib, daratumumab and low-dose dexamethasone in intermediate-fit patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma: an open-label phase 2 trial.

Background: The outcome of non-transplant eligible newly diagnosed multiple myeloma (NDMM) patients is heterogeneous, partly depending on frailty level. The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate the efficacy and safety of Ixazomib-Daratumumab-low-dose dexamethasone (Ixa-Dara-dex) in NDMM intermediate-fit patients.

Methods: In this phase II multicenter HOVON-143 study, IMWG Frailty index based intermediate-fit patients, were treated with 9 induction cycles of Ixa-Dara-dex, followed by maintenance with ID for a maximum of 2 years.

Towards patient-led follow-up after curative surgical resection of stage I, II and III colorectal cancer (DISTANCE-trial): a study protocol for a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised trial.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most frequently diagnosed cancers. Approximately 20-30% of stage I-III CRC patients develop a recurrent tumour or metastases after curative surgical resection. Post-operative follow-up is indicated for the first five years after curative surgical resection.

Results of Pyrocarbon Disc Interposition Compared to Trapeziectomy with Ligament Reconstruction and Tendon Interposition.

Background: To compare pyrocarbon disc interposition arthroplasty (PDI) with trapeziectomy plus ligament reconstruction tendon interposition (LRTI), the authors assessed whether PDI resulted in a higher pinch strength, and compared grip strength, range of motion (ROM), patient-reported outcomes, satisfaction, and complications between the approaches.

Methods: Because of scarcity of preoperative hand measurements, the authors performed a descriptional cross-sectional cohort study of patients operated on between 2006 and 2014, with a minimum of 5 years of follow-up. Patients were treated with PDI or LRTI.

AI-support for the detection of intracranial large vessel occlusions: One-year prospective evaluation.

Purpose: Few studies have evaluated real-world performance of radiological AI-tools in clinical practice. Over one-year, we prospectively evaluated the use of AI software to support the detection of intracranial large vessel occlusions (LVO) on CT angiography (CTA).

Method: Quantitative measures (user log-in attempts, AI standalone performance) and qualitative data (user surveys) were reviewed by a key-user group at three timepoints.

Simultaneous Assessment of mTORC1, JAK/STAT, and NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation Pathways in Patients with Sarcoidosis.

The unknown etiology of sarcoidosis, along with the variability in organ involvement and disease course, complicates the effective treatment of this disease. Based on recent studies, the cellular inflammatory pathways involved in granuloma formation are of interest regarding possible new treatment options, such as the mechanistic (formerly mammalian) target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) pathway, the Janus kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT) pathway, and the nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, pyrin domain-containing-3 (NLRP3) inflammasome pathway. The aim of this study was to explore the potential coexpression of these three inflammatory pathways in patients with sarcoidosis and see whether possible differences were related to disease outcome.

Effect of interprofessional and intraprofessional clinical collaboration on patient related outcomes in multimorbid older patients - a retrospective cohort study on the Intensive Collaboration Ward.

Background: The management and care of older patients with multiple health problems is demanding and complex. Interprofessional and intraprofessional collaboration has the potential to improve both the efficiency and the quality of care for these patients. However, it has proven difficult to demonstrate the efficacy of this approach in terms of objective patient-related outcomes.

Putting ICU triage guidelines into practice: A simulation study using observations and interviews.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted many countries to formulate guidelines on how to deal with a worst-case scenario in which the number of patients needing intensive care unit (ICU) care exceeds the number of available beds. This study aims to explore the experiences of triage teams when triaging fictitious patients with the Dutch triage guidelines. It provides an overview of the factors that influence decision-making when performing ICU triage with triage guidelines.

Long-Term Stroke Risk in Patients With New Ischemic Brain Lesions on MRI After Carotid Revascularization.

Background: Carotid artery revascularization can result in new ischemic brain lesions on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between periprocedural ischemic diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions after carotid artery revascularization and recurrent long-term cerebrovascular events.

Methods: A secondary observational prospective cohort analysis of existing clinical trial data was performed on 162 patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis that were previously randomized to carotid artery stenting or carotid endarterectomy in the ICSS (International Carotid Stenting Study) and included in the magnetic resonance imaging substudy.

Young-onset dementia in memory clinics in the Netherlands: Study design and description of PRECODE-GP.

The disease trajectory and healthcare requirements of patients with young-onset dementia (YOD) differ from those of older patients. Accurate data about YOD is crucial to improve diagnosis and optimize care. PRECODE-GP aims to set up a prospective national database of patients with YOD to gain insight into the occurrence and characteristics of patients with YOD in memory clinics in the Netherlands.

A Cost Overview of Minimally Invasive Total Mesorectal Excision in Rectal Cancer Patients: A Population-based Cohort in Experienced Centres.

Background: Total mesorectal excision has been the gold standard for the operative management of rectal cancer. The most frequently used minimally invasive techniques for surgical resection of rectal cancer are laparoscopic, robot-assisted, and transanal total mesorectal excision. As studies comparing the costs of the techniques are lacking, this study aims to provide a cost overview.

Participation rate and yield of two home-based screening methods to detect increased albuminuria in the general population in the Netherlands (THOMAS): a prospective, randomised, open-label implementation study.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has a rising global prevalence and is expected to become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030. Increased albuminuria defines the early stages of CKD and is among the strongest risk factors for progressive CKD and cardiovascular disease. The value of population screening for albuminuria to detect CKD in an early phase has yet to be studied.

Health-related quality of life and symptom burden in patients on haemodialysis.

Background: Patients on haemodialysis (HD) generally experience poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and a broad range of physical and mental symptoms, but it is unknown whether this differs between younger and older patients. We aimed to describe the trajectories of HRQoL and symptom burden of patients <70 and ≥70 years old and to assess the impact of symptom burden on HRQoL.

Methods: In incident Dutch HD patients, HRQoL and symptoms were measured with the 12-item Short Form Health Survey and Dialysis Symptom Index.

Reliability and Efficiency of the CAPRI-3 Metastatic Prostate Cancer Registry Driven by Artificial Intelligence.

Background: Manual data collection is still the gold standard for disease-specific patient registries. However, CAPRI-3 uses text mining (an artificial intelligence (AI) technology) for patient identification and data collection. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the reliability and efficiency of this AI-driven approach.

A significant proportion of classic Hodgkin lymphoma recurrences represents clonally unrelated second primary lymphoma.

Despite high cure rates in classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL), relapses are observed. Whether relapsed cHL represents second primary lymphoma or an underlying T-cell lymphoma (TCL) mimicking cHL is underinvestigated. To analyze the nature of cHL recurrences, in-depth clonality testing of immunoglobulin (Ig) and T-cell receptor (TCR) rearrangements was performed in paired cHL diagnoses and recurrences among 60 patients, supported by targeted mutation analysis of lymphoma-associated genes.
