Objectives: Fires are among the most feared incidents that can occur in a hospital. Hospital fires will disrupt care continuity, may require the evacuation of patients and have the potential to result in injuries or even deaths. The aim of this study is to gain insight into hospital fires in the Netherlands over a 20-year period.

Background: Acute abdominal pain (AAP) constitutes 5-10% of all emergency department (ED) visits, with appendicitis being a prevalent AAP etiology often necessitating surgical intervention. The variability in AAP symptoms and causes, combined with the challenge of identifying appendicitis, complicate timely intervention. To estimate the risk of appendicitis, scoring systems such as the Alvarado score have been developed.

Objective: To compare nationwide outcomes of robotic liver resection (RLR) with laparoscopic liver resection (LLR).
Background: Minimally invasive liver resection is increasingly performed using the robotic approach as this could help overcome inherent technical limitations of laparoscopy. It is unknown if this translates to improved patient outcomes.

Introduction: Adjuvant chemotherapy improves survival in patients with resected pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). The decision to initiate chemotherapy involves both patient and physician factors, decision-specific criteria, and contextual considerations. This study aimed to assess medical oncologists' views on adjuvant chemotherapy following pancreatic resection for PDAC.

Although most patients with pulmonary carcinoid (PC) can be cured by surgery, relapse may occur until 15 years after resection in up to 10% of patients. This is unpredictable at the outset, necessitating extensive follow-up (FU). We sought to determine whether an immunohistochemical marker panel (OTP, CD44, Ki-67) could provide better indication for relapse-free survival (RFS) and increase uniformity among pathologists regarding carcinoid classification.

To assess the cost-effectiveness of low-dose aspirin compared to placebo for the prevention of recurrent preterm birth from a healthcare perspective. This was a cost-effectiveness analysis alongside a multicenter, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. We included women with a singleton pregnancy and a previous spontaneous preterm birth <37 weeks of gestation of a singleton.

Many European healthcare systems emphasize value-based care to improve outcomes and control costs. Assessing function and satisfaction in hand surgery relies on patient reported outcome measures. This study evaluates the use of these outcome measures across Europe, focusing on diversity and language validation.

Introduction: Hysterosalpingography (HSG) and hysterosalpingo-foam sonography (HyFoSy) are commonly used tubal patency tests during the fertility work-up. Besides its diagnostic purpose, HSG with oil-based contrast can also be applied for its fertility-enhancing effect, by tubal flushing. HyFoSy is considered as less painful compared with HSG, it lacks exposure to iodinated contrast medium and ionising radiation.

Background: For patients with metastatic bladder cancer (mBC) palliative chemotherapy is one of the main treatment options. Real-world insights into outcomes are available, but a comprehensive overview of specific treatment details like number of chemotherapy cycles received and (reasons for) adjustments is lacking.
Methods: A population-based study was conducted, including all patients diagnosed with mBC in the Netherlands between 2016 and 2021 who started chemotherapy as initial treatment.

Background: The fecal immunochemical test for hemoglobin (FIT) is now a widely used non-invasive test in population-based organized screening programs for colorectal neoplasia. The positivity thresholds of tests currently in use are based on the fecal hemoglobin concentration (f-Hb), but the rationale for the adopted thresholds are not well documented. To understand current global usage of FIT in screening programs we conducted an international survey of the brands of FIT used, the f-Hb positivity threshold applied and the rationale for the choice.

Background: Informal caregivers play a crucial role in dialysis care but may experience significant burden, potentially affecting both caregiver and patient outcomes. Research on caregiver burden and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and the relation to patient-reported outcomes (PROs) is lacking. Therefore, we aimed to (i) describe informal caregivers' experienced burden and HRQoL and (ii) investigate how these are related to dialysis patients' HRQoL and symptoms.

Purpose: The loss of olfactory function is known to occur in patients suffering from (behavioral variant) frontotemporal dementia ((bv)FTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), although different pathophysiological mechanisms underpin this clinical symptom in both disorders. This study assessed whether brain metabolism of the olfactory circuit as assessed by positron emission tomography (PET) imaging with 2-[fluorine-18]fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose ([F]-FDG) can distinguish these entities in different subsets of patients.
Methods: Patients presenting with cognitive decline were included from a prospectively kept database: (1) bvFTD patients, (2) AD patients and (3) patients with logopenic primary progressive aphasia (PPA).

In recent years, it has become clear that artificial intelligence (AI) models can achieve high accuracy in specific pathology-related tasks. An example is our deep-learning model, designed to automatically detect serous tubal intraepithelial carcinoma (STIC), the precursor lesion to high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma, found in the fallopian tube. However, the standalone performance of a model is insufficient to determine its value in the diagnostic setting.

Objectives: Iron deficiency anemia is a significant global health concern, diagnosed by measuring hemoglobin concentrations in combination with plasma ferritin concentration. This study investigated the variability in ferritin reference intervals among laboratories in the Netherlands and examined how this affects the identification of iron-related disorders.
Methods: Ferritin reference intervals from 52 Dutch ISO15189-certified medical laboratories were collected.
