Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain is of high interest for diagnosing and understanding degenerative ataxias. Here, we present state-of-the-art MRI methods to characterize structural alterations of the cerebellum and introduce initial experiments to show abnormalities in the cerebellar nuclei. Clinically, T1-weighted MR images are used to assess atrophy of the cerebellar cortex, the brainstem, and the spinal cord, whereas T2-weighted and PD-weighted images are typically employed to depict potential white matter lesions that may be associated with certain types of ataxias.

Objective: The complication rate for cranioplasty after decompressive craniectomy is higher than that after other neurosurgical procedures; aseptic bone resorption is the major long-term problem. Patients frequently need additional operations to remove necrotic bone and replace it with an artificial bone substitute. Introduction: When using radial MR image acquisition techniques gradient or sampling delays due to hardware imperfections can cause mismatch between the expected and the actual k-space trajectory along the readout direction. To provide a robust and simple correction of such system delays we developed a new calibration method which is independent of using any reference data or applying sequence modifications.

Objective: Digital X-ray radiogrammetry (DXR) is a computer-assisted technique used to quantify cortical bone density of the metacarpals. The influence of metacarpal bone rotation and type of cast material on bone mineral density (BMD) measurements using the DXR technique was tested.

Methods: The bone mineral density of the hand was measured by DXR, and rotation error (DXR-RE) as coefficients of variation were calculated, to verify reliability and reproducibility of this radiogeometric technique to assess in particular minor disease-related changes in the metacarpal bone mass.

Purpose: To demonstrate radial golden-ratio-based cardiac cine imaging by using interspersed one-dimensional (1D) navigators.

Materials And Methods: The 1D navigators were interspersed into the acquisition of radial spokes which were continuously rotated by an angle increment based on the golden-ratio. Performing correlation analysis between the 1D navigator projections, time points corresponding to the same cardiac motion phases were automatically identified and used to combine retrospectively golden-ratio rotated radial spokes from multiple data windows.

Neuronal network formation depends on properly timed and localized generation of presynaptic as well as postsynaptic structures. Although of utmost importance for understanding development and plasticity of the nervous system and neurodegenerative diseases, the molecular mechanisms that ensure the fine-control needed for coordinated establishment of pre- and postsynapses are still largely unknown. We show that the F-actin-binding protein Abp1 is prominently expressed in the Drosophila nervous system and reveal that Abp1 is an important regulator in shaping glutamatergic neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) of flies.

Molecular and cellular changes that precede the invasive growth of solid tumors include the release of proteolytic enzymes and peptides in the tumor stroma, the recruitment of phagocytic and lymphoid infiltrates and alteration of the extracellular matrix. The reactive tumor stroma consists of a large number of myofibroblasts, characterized by high expression of fibroblast activation protein alpha (FAP). FAP, a type-II transmembrane sialoglycoprotein is an attractive target in diagnosis and therapy of several pathologic disorders especially cancer.
