The coordinated action of a plethora of factors is required for the organization and dynamics of membranous structures critically underlying the development and function of cells, organs, and organisms. The evolutionary acquisition of additional amino acid motifs allows for expansion and/or specification of protein functions. We identify a thus far unrecognized motif specific for chordata EHBP1 proteins and demonstrate that this motif is critically required for interaction with syndapin I, an F-BAR domain-containing, membrane-shaping protein predominantly expressed in neurons.

Purpose Of Review: This review comments on the current guidelines for the treatment of wound infections under definition of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI). However, wound infections around a catheter, such as driveline infections of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) are not specifically listed under this definition in any of the existing guidelines.

Recent Findings: Definitions and classification of LVAD infections may vary across countries, and the existing guidelines and recommendations may not be equally interpreted among physicians, making it unclear if these infections can be considered as ABSSSI.

Association between hospital onset of infection and outcomes in sepsis patients - A propensity score matched cohort study based on health claims data in Germany.

Background: Hospital-acquired infections are a common source of sepsis. Hospital onset of sepsis was found to be associated with higher acute mortality and hospital costs, yet its impact on long-term patient-relevant outcomes and costs is unknown.

Objective: We aimed to assess the association between sepsis origin and acute and long-term outcomes based on a nationwide population-based cohort of sepsis patients in Germany.

Cortical thickness alterations and systemic inflammation define long-COVID patients with cognitive impairment.

As the heterogeneity of symptoms is increasingly recognized among long-COVID patients, it appears highly relevant to study potential pathophysiological differences along the different subtypes. Preliminary evidence suggests distinct alterations in brain structure and systemic inflammatory patterns in specific groups of long-COVID patients. To this end, we analyzed differences in cortical thickness and peripheral immune signature between clinical subgroups based on 3 T-MRI scans and signature inflammatory markers in n = 120 participants comprising healthy never-infected controls (n = 30), healthy COVID-19 survivors (n = 29), and subgroups of long-COVID patients with (n = 26) and without (n = 35) cognitive impairment according to screening with Montreal Cognitive Assessment.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) is a devastating disease affecting millions of people worldwide. Due to the 2019 pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), we are facing a significant increase of ME/CFS prevalence. On May 11th to 12th, 2023, the second international ME/CFS conference of the Charité Fatigue Center was held in Berlin, Germany, focusing on pathomechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment.

Enhancing student understanding of rheumatic disease pathologies through augmented reality: findings from a multicentre trial.

Objective: The possibility of combining real and virtual environments is driving the increased use of augmented reality (AR) in education, including medical training. The aim of this multicentre study was to evaluate the students' perspective on the AR-based Rheumality GO!® app as a new teaching concept, presenting six real anonymized patient cases with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA).

Tumors are a highly heterogeneous mass of tissue showing distinct therapy responses. In particular, the therapeutic outcome of tumor hyperthermia treatments has been inconsistent, presumably due to tumor versus endothelial cell cross-talks related to the treatment temperature and the tumor tissue environment. Here, we investigated the impact of the average or strong hyperthermic treatment (43 °C or 47 °C for 1 h) of the human pancreatic adenocarcinoma cell line (PANC-1 and BxPC-3) on endothelial cells (HUVECs) under post-treatment normoxic or hypoxic conditions.

Covid Pandemic Effects on the Physical Fitness of Primary School Children: Results of the German EMOTIKON Project.

Background: In spring of 2020, the Sars-CoV-2 incidence rate increased rapidly in Germany and around the world. Throughout the next 2 years, schools were temporarily closed and social distancing measures were put in place to slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Did these social restrictions and temporary school lockdowns affect children's physical fitness? The EMOTIKON project annually tests the physical fitness of all third-graders in the Federal State of Brandenburg, Germany.
