Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver dysfunction characterized by excess lipid accumulation; non-alcoholic steatohepatitis can transform into more severe conditions, such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although several pharmacologic approaches have been evaluated in clinical trials, there are no approved therapies for NAFLD. Previous studies have suggested that taurine supplementation alleviates fatty liver; however, the underlying mechanism remains obscure.

A great effort to discover new therapeutic ingredients is often initiated through the discovery of the existence of novel marine natural products. Since substances produced by the marine environment might be structurally more complex and unique than terrestrial natural products, there have been cases of misassignments of their structures despite the availability of modern spectroscopic and computational chemistry techniques. When it comes to refutation to erroneously or tentatively proposed structures empirical preparations through organic chemical synthesis has the greatest contribution along with close and sophiscated inspection of spectroscopic data.

The highly enantioselective aza-Michael reaction of -butyl β-naphthylmethoxycarbamate to cyclic enones has been accomplished by using a new alkaloid derived C(9)-urea ammonium catalyst under phase-transfer catalysis conditions with up to 98% ee at 0 °C. The resulting aza-Michael adducts can be converted to versatile intermediates by selective deprotection and the cyclic 1,3-aminoalcohols by diastereoselective reduction with up to 32:1, which have been widely used as important pharmacophores in pharmaceutical development.

Since the 1990s, nitrate contamination of groundwater has emerged as a major environmental issue. Protein phosphorylation is one of the most widely observed and important post-translational modification (PTM) processes. Protein phosphorylation is regulated by protein kinases, each of which covalently attaches a phosphate group to an amino acid side chain on a serine (Ser), threonine (Thr), or tyrosine (Tyr) residue of a protein, and by protein phosphatases, each of which, conversely, removes a phosphate group from a phosphoprotein. These reversible enzyme activities provide a regulatory mechanism by activating or deactivating many diverse functions of proteins in various cellular processes.

Herein, we review the recent progress in the synthesis of representative nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), ibuprofen and naproxen. Although these drugs were discovered over 50 years ago, novel practical and asymmetric approaches are still being developed for their synthesis. In addition, this endeavor has enabled access to more potent and selective derivatives from the key frameworks of ibuprofen and naproxen.

Dinoflagellates are an important group of phytoplanktons, characterized by two dissimilar flagella and distinctive features of both plants and animals. Dinoflagellate-generated harmful algal blooms (HABs) and associated damage frequently occur in coastal areas, which are concomitant with increasing eutrophication and climate change derived from anthropogenic waste and atmospheric carbon dioxide, respectively. The severe damage and harmful effects of dinoflagellate phycotoxins in the fishing industry have been recognized over the past few decades, and the management and monitoring of HABs have attracted much attention, leaving aside the industrial application of their valuable toxins.

This study was carried out to identify and estimate physiological function of a new type of opsin subfamily present in the retina and whole brain tissues of Japanese eel using RNA-Seq transcriptome method. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression patterns of ocular melatonin in the annual reproductive cycle of the female grass puffer. Spawning season of the female grass puffer is from June to July in Jeju, South Korea. Time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay revealed that levels of ocular melatonin, which show an annual change, peaked in May (spawning season).

The sapphire devil (Chrysiptera cyanea) is a tropical damselfish that undergoes active reproduction under long-day conditions. To elucidate the physiological regulation of the brain-pituitary-gonadal axis in female sapphire devil, we cloned and characterized the genes of two kisspeptins (kiss1 and kiss2), three gonadotropin-releasing hormones (gnrh1, gnrh2, gnrh3), and the β-subunit of two gonadotropins (fshβ and lhβ) and investigated the gene expression changes during ovarian development. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses in various brain parts revealed high expression levels of kiss1, kiss2, and gnrh2 in the diencephalon; gnrh2 and gnrh3 in the telencephalon; and fshβ and lhβ in the pituitary.
