Scope: Particulate matter (PM) can cause cellular oxidative damage and promote respiratory diseases. It has recently shown that Sargassum horneri ethanol extract (SHE) containing sterols and gallic acid reduces PM-induced oxidative stress in mice lung cells through ROS scavenging and metal chelating. In this study, the role of alveolar macrophages (AMs) is identified that are particularly susceptible to DNA damage due to PM-triggered oxidative stress in lungs of OVA-sensitized mice exposed to PM.

Heavy metals found in the environment, including arsenic (As) pose significant risks to human health and present a risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA). This study researched the impact of As on cartilage degeneration by focusing on the role of As in causing OA in mice. We employed chemical inhibition and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analyses to identify the effect of As on chondrocytes as well as studying its accumulation in organs after oral administration in mice.

Happiness is predicted by social relationships in general and contact frequency in particular. This study aims to examine if the relative importance of social contacts with the closest family/relative, friend, and neighbor in happiness changes with advancing age. We used data for all participants aged 19 years and older (n = 229,099) in the 2019 Community Health Survey, which measured the frequency of contact with the closest relative/family, neighbor, and friend among a representative sample of Koreans between August 16 and October 31, 2019.

Serum and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase 1 (SGK1) is a serine/threonine kinase belonging to the protein kinase A, G, and C (AGC) family. Upon initiation of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) signaling pathway, mammalian target of rapamycin complex 2 (mTORC2) and phosphoinositide-dependent protein kinase 1 (PDK1) phosphorylate the hydrophobic motif and kinase domain of SGK1, respectively, inducing SGK1 activation. SGK1 modulates essential cellular processes such as proliferation, survival, and apoptosis.

Qualitative Geographic Information Systems (QGIS) represent an emerging geospatial and qualitative approach to comprehensively understand health issues. This scoping review gathers evidence from 38 articles to illuminate when and how QGIS is used to address health issues. QGIS can contribute to recent health-related studies focusing on determinants of health and health equity at the community rather than individual level, highlight relationships between place and health, and encourage participation from people and communities in health-decision making.

Although age-related characteristics of hepatic metabolism are reported, those in infants are not fully understood. In the present study, we performed untargeted metabolomic profiling of the livers of infant (3-week-old) and adult (9-week-old) male ICR mice using H-NMR spectroscopy and compared 35 abundant hepatic metabolite concentrations between the two groups. The liver/body weight ratio did not differ between the two groups; however, serum glucose, blood urea nitrogen, total cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations were lower in infants than in adults.

Inactivation of Capicua (CIC) or upregulation of yes-associated protein 1, YAP1, leads to broad RAS-RAF-MEK-ERK inhibitor resistance and tumor progression in multiple human cancers. Despite these shared malignant phenotypes, it remains unclear whether CIC and YAP1 are mechanistically linked. Here, we show that the ERK-regulated transcription factor CIC can directly repress YAP1 expression through non-consensus GGAAGGAA DNA-binding motifs in a proximal YAP1 regulatory element.
