Nursing Home Staff Perspectives of the Benefits and Challenges of Providing Dementia Care.

Objectives: To capture nursing home staff perspectives on the benefits and challenges related to caring for residents living with Alzheimer disease and other related dementias. These perspectives will inform the initial development of strategies to help with staff retention.

Design: A secondary qualitative analysis of semistructured interviews conducted with nursing home staff, which was embedded within a pragmatic clinical trial.

Enhancing data standards to advance translation in spinal cord injury.

Data standards are available for spinal cord injury (SCI). The International SCI Data Sets were created in 2002 and there are currently 27 freely available. In 2014 the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke developed clinical common data elements to promote clinical data sharing in SCI.

Enhancing recovery: surgical techniques and rehabilitation strategies after direct anterior hip arthroplasty.

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common surgical procedure for hip joint pathologies, with the direct anterior approach (DAA) gaining popularity due to potential benefits in postoperative recovery. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of rehabilitation strategies following DAA THA, focusing on surgical techniques, postoperative care, and outcomes. The evolution of the DAA to THA is discussed, highlighting historical advancements and comparisons with other surgical approaches.

Climate change and its impact on health: a global collaborative learning model.

To address the health effects of climate change, leaders in healthcare have called for action to integrate climate adaptation and mitigation into training programs for health professionals. However, current educators may not possess sufficient climate literacy and the expertise to effectively include such content in their respective healthcare curricula. We, an international and interprofessional partnership, collaborated with experts to develop and deploy curriculum to increase health educators' and graduate health profession students' knowledge and competencies on climate change.

Addressing Sensory Challenges in Athletes with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Clinical Commentary.

Athletes with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience lesser care for injuries and athletic trainers (ATs) report feeling unprepared to provide care competently for this population. Provision of sports-related care can be impacted by sensory differences associated with ASD such as hyper-reactivity to sensation or poor integration of sensory information. An in-depth review of the literature using the Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) guidelines was used to identify articles that address the sensory features of autism for athletic trainers with the purpose of informing athletic trainers about the sensory features of ASD and to present the most current evidence-based recommendations for providing care to athletes with ASD and other neurodivergent individuals who present with sensory differences.

Perspectives of Nursing Home Staff: Application of Dementia Training Approaches.

Non-pharmacological strategies are prioritized to manage dementia-related symptoms in nursing homes (NHs). A multiple-case study design, embedded within a pragmatic trial, examined NH staff perspectives of applying a team-based (TB) or problem-based dementia training program to resident care. A purposive sample of staff was recruited from 23 NHs to participate in one-on-one interviews, which were analyzed using a rapid qualitative approach.

A Culture Shift for Excellence in Physical Therapy: Promoting Equity Through the Structural Determinants of Health.

Unlabelled: The purpose of this perspective is to discuss the imperative for curricular change that focuses on the utilization of structural competency to promote excellence in physical therapist professional education, transform society, and achieve health equity. Pedagogy centered around biomedical and social determinants of health (SDOH) models are limited in that they lack self-reflexivity, encode social identities like race and gender as risk factors for poor health, fail to examine structural causes of health inequity, conflate SDOH and the structural forces that shape their unequal distribution, and overlook instances of injustice. Promoting health equity will require structural competency, an approach that considers drivers of health beyond the individual and their conditions of daily living (ie, SDOH).

A Qualitative Investigation of Parent Perceptions of Home Exercises for Congenital Muscular Torticollis.

The purpose of this qualitative study was to describe parent perceptions of the home exercise program (HEP) for infants with congenital muscular torticollis (CMT), and how these perceptions evolved over a physical therapy (PT) plan of care. Twelve participants were recruited from a pediatric PT clinic, and nine completed interviews at three time points. Qualitative description and an iterative approach for thematic analysis of 27 interviews yielded three themes that corresponded to the research questions.

LGBTQIA+ Cultural Competence in Physical Therapist Education and Practice: A Qualitative Study From the Patients' Perspective.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of cultural competence and humility among patients of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) community in physical therapy. Researchers sought to understand the perspectives of adults over 18 years old who have received physical therapy and identify as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Methods: A phenomenological qualitative approach was utilized for this study.

An Exploration of Doctor of Physical Therapy Students' Belongingness in Clinical Education: A Validation Study.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to adapt and validate the Belongingness Scale-Clinical Placement Experience (BES-CPE) for Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students in the United States.

Review Of Literature: Belongingness is vital to one's mental, emotional, and physical health. Research has shown that belongingness is positively correlated with students' academic performance and achievement.

Parents' Perceptions of Eye-Gaze Technology Use by Children With Complex Communication Needs.

Purpose: Some preschool students with complex communication needs explore eye-gaze computer technology (EGCT) and adopt computer-based augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The objective of this study was to follow preschool explorers of EGCT who are now school aged to describe the children's use of technology and parents' perceptions of its utility for communication, participation, or leisure.

Method: Ten parents completed survey questions by Internet and phone and reported their perceptions of nine children's effectiveness in the use and acceptance of AAC and the support they received in implementing technology.

LGBTQIA+ Cultural Competence in Physical Therapy: An Exploratory Qualitative Study From the Clinician's Perspective.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to understand the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, agender, and other gender and sexually diverse identities (LGBTQIA+) health care experience and associated cultural competence from the physical therapist perspective (physical therapist and physical therapist assistant).

Methods: An exploratory qualitative approach implementing semi-structured focus groups and private interviews was utilized. To further anonymity, researchers allowed subjects to keep their camera off on Zoom.

Nurturing the Seeds of Participation: Unveiling the Foundational Path for Understanding Aging in Place Barriers and Facilitators From the Perspective of Older Adults Using Mixed Methods and Translational Science.

Participation in society is a cornerstone for quality of life, active aging, and aging in place. While the majority of older adults prefer aging in place, health and financial challenges can hinder this vision. Conducted in suburban South Jersey, this study utilized mixed methods, including surveys and interviews with older adult participants.

Feasibility of Improving Global Health in Underserved Populations by Utilizing Service-Learning and Pro Bono Physical Therapy: A Systematic Review.

Purpose: Restrictions in access and affordability of health care across the world limits global health. Pro bono physical therapy through service-learning in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) curricula has been proposed to address these limitations. However, there is a lack of research regarding best practice.

An Interactive Module to Enhance Clinical and Non-clinical Communication Skills With LGBTQIA2S+ Patients.

The Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, Two-Spirit, and all others (LGBTQIA2S+) community comprises a diverse array of people who challenge conventional norms regarding sexual orientation and/or gender identity. This group possesses a distinct set of social and cultural principles that necessitate personalized and all-encompassing medical attention. In light of the increase in the number of individuals openly sharing their LGBTQIA2S+ identity and a growing societal openness toward this community, most healthcare providers do not feel prepared with the requisite knowledge and skills to appropriately care for the needs of this community.

Promoting community engagement in spinal cord injury research: a case example.

Community engagement is an important method of knowledge translation in spinal cord injury (SCI) research where researchers collaborate with people with lived experience, care partners, and other research users to improve the quality of research. This perspective article aims to promote community engagement in SCI research by describing useful resources for its implementation and providing an example project using the North American Spinal Cord Injury Consortium (NASCIC) process for such partnerships. Researchers from the Jefferson College of Rehabilitation Sciences' (JCRS) Center for Outcomes and Measurement engaged NASCIC to create an advisory committee composed of four people living with SCI to make recommendations for the methods of a large-scale study to develop a clinical outcome assessment.

Understanding the Experiences of Family Caregivers of Nursing Home Residents With Dementia: A Grounded Theory Study.

Background And Objectives: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias progress over time and result in cognitive decline, loss of independence, and behavioral and psychiatric symptoms of dementia that can lead to nursing home placement. Research has focused on examining the effects of nursing home placement on the family caregiver; however, their experiences are less understood. We sought to investigate the experiences and perceptions of family caregivers of nursing home residents with dementia.

Bladder and bowel function effects on emotional functioning in youth with spinal cord injury: a serial multiple mediator analysis.

Study Design: Preliminary explanatory or mechanistic cross-sectional study.

Objectives: This preliminary cross-sectional study investigates the hypothesized serial mediating effects of bladder/bowel worry, social worry, and social participation in the relationship between bladder function or bowel function and emotional functioning in youth with spinal cord injury (SCI) from their perspective.

Methods: The Bladder Function, Bowel Function, Worry Bladder Bowel, Worry Social, and Social Participation Scales from the PedsQL™ Spinal Cord Injury Module and the Emotional Functioning Scale from the PedsQL™ 4.

Evaluating non-pharmacological approaches to nursing home dementia care: A protocol.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the daily challenges nursing home (NH) staff face caring for the residents living with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (). Non-pharmacological approaches are prioritized over off-label medication to manage the behavioral and psychological symptoms of ADRD. Yet, it is not clear how to best equip NH staff and families with the knowledge and strategies needed to provide non-pharmacological approaches to these residents.

The role of the insula in chronic pain following spinal cord injury: A resting-state fMRI study.

Background And Purpose: Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in the loss of motor and sensory function from disconnections between efferent and afferent pathways. Most SCI patients are affected with chronic neuropathic pain, but there is a paucity of data concerning neuroplastic changes following SCI. Chronic pain disrupts default networks and is associated with abnormal insular connectivity.

Patient Experience of Photobiomodulation Therapy in Head and Neck Chronic Lymphedema.

Lymphedema is a common late effect of head and neck cancer treatment that causes various symptoms, functional impairment, and poor quality of life. We completed a pilot, prospective, single-arm clinical trial to determine the feasibility and potential efficacy of the use of photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy for head and neck lymphedema. In this study, we report patients' perceived treatment experience of PBM therapy and provide suggestions to better understand head and neck cancer survivors' experience of PBM therapy.
