Department of Electronic Engineering, Yeungnam University, Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do 38541, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

A non-enzymatic glucose biosensor was developed by utilizing the zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) synthesized by a novel green method using the leaf extract of Ocimum tenuiflorum. The structural, optical and morphological properties of ZnO NPs characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDAX) spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD analysis revealed that the ZnO NPs were crystalline and had a hexagonal wurtzite structure.

Root traits confer grain yield advantages under terminal drought in chickpea ( L.).

Field Crops Res

International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Patancheru, India; School of Plant Biology and Institute of Agriculture, The University of Western Australia, WA, Australia.

Chickpea, the second most important legume crop, suffers major yield losses by terminal drought stress (DS). Stronger root system is known to enhance drought yields but this understanding remains controversial. To understand precisely the root traits contribution towards yield, 12 chickpea genotypes with well-known drought response were field evaluated under drought and optimal irrigation.

An efficient and green synthesis of pyrazolyl-2,4-thiazolidinediones/pyrazolyl-2-iminothiazolidine-4-ones 7(a-j) has been developed using urea/thiourea as catalyst. Two methods (A and B) have been introduced for the synthesis of these compounds. Method A performed well for the condensation of pyrazole-4-carboxaldehydes 4(a-e) with 2-iminothiazolidin-4-one 5a and with 2,4-thiazolidinedione 5b at 110 [Formula: see text] for 16-20 min to furnish (Z)-5-((1,3-diphenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)methylene)thiazolidine-2,4-diones 7(a-j) in excellent yields.

A new hybrid template has been designed by integrating the structural features of nimesulide and the 1,2,3-triazole moiety in a single molecular entity at the same time eliminating the problematic nitro group of nimesulide. The template has been used for the generation of a library of molecules as potential anticancer agents. A mild and greener CuAAC approach has been used to synthesize these compounds via the reaction of 4-azido derivative of nimesulide and terminal alkynes in water.

A series of 1-[3-(4-methyl piperazin-1-ylmethyl) phenylsulfonyl]-1H-indole and 1-[3-(4-ethyl piperazin-1-ylmethyl) phenylsulfonyl]-1H-indole derivatives were designed and synthesized as 5-HT receptor (5-HTR) ligands. The lead compound 1-[4-methyl-3-(4-methyl piperazin-1-yl methyl) phenylsulfonyl]-1H-indole dihydrochloride (6b), in this series, has shown potent in vitro binding affinity, selectivity, good pharmacokinetics (PK) profile and activity in the animal models of cognition.

1H-1,2,3-Triazolyl-substituted 1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives containing structural features of ibuprofen/naproxen were synthesized for the first time using a Cu catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) strategy. An optimized reaction condition was established for this purpose and twenty new compounds were synthesized using this methodology. Several of these compounds showed good to reasonable antibacterial activities when tested against three gram-positive and three gram-negative species.

Shoot traits and their relevance in terminal drought tolerance of chickpea ( L.).

Field Crops Res

October 2016

International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Patancheru, India; School of Plant Biology and Institute of Agriculture, The University of Western Australia, WA, Australia.

Chickpea is the second most important legume crop largely grown under semi-arid tropics where terminal drought is one of the major constraints for its productivity. A trait-based selection had been considered more beneficial in drought tolerance breeding to overcome the environmental influence on drought yields. Large number of traits had been suggested in literature, with less indication on their importance and priority, for use in such breeding programs resulting in poor utilization of critical traits in drought tolerance breeding.

Background: The present study emphasizes on designing a new series of isatin-dihydropyrimidinone derivatives by adopting a hybrid pharmacophore approach. Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NP) are magnetically recoverable and are effective catalysts adequately used to synthesize Isatin-dihydropyrimidinones. Individual derivatives of Isatin and dihydropyrimidinone are equipotent to treat cytotoxicity.

Background: 1,8-Naphthyridine derivatives have attracted considerable attention because the 1,8-naphthyridine skeleton is present in many compounds that have been isolated from natural substances, with various biological activities.

Findings: N,N-dimethoxy-N-methyl-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carboxamide (1) on reaction with Grignard reagent forms 2-methoxy-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carbaldehyde (2). Compound 2 on reaction with different aromatic aldehydes provided 1-(2-cyclopropyl-1,8-naphthyridin-3-yl)-3-arylprop-2-en-1-ones (3a-e) and these compounds on cyclisation with hydrazine hydrate 99% yielded 2-cyclopropyl-3-(5-aryl-1H-pyrazol-3-yl)-1,8-naphthyridines (4-a-e).

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a multi-factorial disorder with high-penetrant mutations accounting for small percentage of PD. Our previous studies demonstrated individual association of genetic variants in folate, xenobiotic, and dopamine metabolic pathways with PD risk. The rational of the study was to develop a risk prediction model for PD using these genetic polymorphisms along with synuclein (SNCA) polymorphism.
