Objective: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery has its own set of risks and complications. This study from a single center and a single surgeon analyzes various risk factors for complications and tries to establish if there is a learning curve effect in minimizing the complications.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis of 519 patients (1024 leads) who underwent DBS surgery and 232 patients who underwent implantable pulse generator replacement (IPG), by a single surgeon, between the years 1999 and 2019 was performed.

Objectives: This study sought to describe worldwide variations in the use of myocardial perfusion imaging hardware, software, and imaging protocols and their impact on radiation effective dose (ED).

Background: Concerns about long-term effects of ionizing radiation have prompted efforts to identify strategies for dose optimization in myocardial perfusion scintigraphy. Studies have increasingly shown opportunities for dose reduction using newer technologies and optimized protocols.

We investigated the diagnostic utility and safety of intracoronary bolus administration of nicorandil compared with intravenous administration of adenosine for evaluating FFR in patients with intermediate (40-70%) coronary stenosis. The FFR values obtained with nicorandil and adenosine showed linear relationship. This correlation is statistically significant with regression coefficient of 0.

Article Synopsis
  • There is limited data on the impact of COVID-19 on kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) in emerging countries, specifically in India, where a study involved 250 patients confirmed positive for the virus.
  • The study found that KTRs presented with high comorbidity rates, especially hypertension and diabetes, and exhibited a range of COVID-19 symptoms, with 14% experiencing severe disease and a mortality rate of 11.6%.
  • Key risk factors for higher mortality included older age, severe disease, prior allograft dysfunction, and the need for intensive care, with significant mortality rates, particularly in ventilated patients.

Study Question: Is the DNA damage response (DDR) dysregulated in the eutopic endometrium of women with endometriosis?

Summary Answer: Endometrial expression of genes involved in DDR is modulated in women with endometriosis, compared to those without the disease.

What Is Known Already: Ectopic endometriotic lesions are reported to harbour somatic mutations, thereby hinting at dysregulation of DDR and DNA repair pathways. However, it remains inconclusive whether the eutopic endometrium also manifests dysregulated DDR in endometriosis.

A consensus has yet to emerge whether deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treatment-refractory obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can be considered an established therapy. In 2014, the World Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (WSSFN) published consensus guidelines stating that a therapy becomes established when "at least two blinded randomized controlled clinical trials from two different groups of researchers are published, both reporting an acceptable risk-benefit ratio, at least comparable with other existing therapies. The clinical trials should be on the same brain area for the same psychiatric indication.

Bi-allelic loss-of-function variants in genes that encode subunits of the adaptor protein complex 4 (AP-4) lead to prototypical yet poorly understood forms of childhood-onset and complex hereditary spastic paraplegia: SPG47 (AP4B1), SPG50 (AP4M1), SPG51 (AP4E1) and SPG52 (AP4S1). Here, we report a detailed cross-sectional analysis of clinical, imaging and molecular data of 156 patients from 101 families. Enrolled patients were of diverse ethnic backgrounds and covered a wide age range (1.

The optimum imaging modality for the screening of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1)-associated tumors is not well established. Here, we compare the performance of contrast-enhanced CT (CECT) versus Ga DOTA-NOC/TATE PET/CT in MEN1 patients. The retrospective case record study is conducted at a tertiary health-care center.

Objectives: This study sought to establish worldwide and regional diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) and achievable administered activities (AAAs) for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI).

Background: Reference levels serve as radiation dose benchmarks to compare individual laboratories against aggregated data, helping to identify sites in greatest need of dose reduction interventions. DRLs for SPECT MPI have previously been derived from national or regional registries.

Established and novel gender dimorphisms in type 2 diabetes mellitus: Insights from a multiethnic cohort.

Diabetes Metab Syndr

July 2021

Division of Cardiology, Cliniques universitaires St-Luc and Pôle de Recherche Cardiovasculaire, Institut de Recherche Expérimentale et Clinique (IREC), Université catholique de Louvain, Brussels, Belgium.

Background And Aims: In type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), sexual dimorphisms modulate the natural histories of hyperglycemia, anthropophysical/cardiometabolic phenotype, and susceptibility to chronic micro and macrovascular complications. The purpose of this work was to revisit known or new dimorphisms within a multiethnic cohort.

Methods: Among 1238 T2DM patients, men (63%) were compared to women (37%), including leading ethnicities: Whites (67.

: To evaluate the current utilization and challenges in fully implementing the use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) treatment in Asia and Oceania. : We conducted a medical literature search to identify DBS research performed by investigators with a primary affiliation in Asian and Oceania countries between March 1, 2013, and March 1, 2019, followed by an international survey-based study. Additionally, we obtained added information regarding the DBS challenges and opportunities from the technology/industry perspective within China and Japan.

The present, updated document describes the fourth iteration of recommendations for the hepatic use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound, first initiated in 2004 by the European Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. The previous updated editions of the guidelines reflected changes in the available contrast agents and updated the guidelines not only for hepatic but also for non-hepatic applications. The 2012 guideline requires updating as, previously, the differences in the contrast agents were not precisely described and the differences in contrast phases as well as handling were not clearly indicated.
