The Y-linked SRY gene initiates mammalian testis-determination. However, how the expression of SRY is regulated remains elusive. Here, we demonstrate that a conserved steroidogenic factor-1 (SF-1)/NR5A1 binding enhancer is required for appropriate SRY expression to initiate testis-determination in humans.

Global conflicts and humanitarian crises have resulted in an unprecedented number of refugees and migrants. This challenges the limited resources of health care systems and jeopardizes the availability of transplant care for these deserving migrants and refugees. This was the basis for a workshop held during the Congress of the Transplantation Society (Buenos Aires, 2022).

Article Synopsis
  • * The timeline of infections post-transplant indicates that bacterial infections dominate initially, with viral and fungal infections becoming more prevalent later, and opportunistic infections usually occurring within the first 6 months.
  • * To effectively manage infection risks, it is essential to consider factors like time since transplant, patient history, and local infection trends, leading to a need for tailored regional guidelines for screening and prevention.

Background: The role of deep brain stimulation in the treatment of dystonia has been widely documented. However, there is limited literature on the outcome of lesioning surgery in unilateral dystonia.

Objective: We restrospectively reviewed our cases of focal and hemidystonia undergoing unilateral Pallidotomy at our institute to evaluate the short-term and long-term outcome.

Objective: To investigate the adverse effects of phthalate-induced ovarian toxicity on the ovarian reserve and ovarian function. To assess whether the accumulation of higher levels of selected phthalate metabolites in the follicular fluid (FF) of Indian women undergoing intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was associated with a decline in their antral follicle count (AFC) and/or serum antimüllerian hormone (AMH) levels, suggesting a negative impact on the ovarian reserve. To evaluate the effects of follicular phthalate metabolites on peak serum estradiol (E) levels and the total number of oocytes and mature metaphase II (MII) stage oocytes retrieved to assess the impact of phthalate toxicity on ovarian function.

Pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) is a vital tool in preventing chromosomal aneuploidies and other genetic disorders including those that are monogenic in origin. It is performed on embryos created by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Genetic counseling in the area of assisted reproductive technology (ART) has also evolved along with PGT and is considered an essential and integral part of Reproductive Medicine.

  • Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the central nervous system is a rare tumor that can recur and spread to other parts of the body.
  • Treatment options for its metastatic form are limited.
  • The case report highlights successful treatment with Lu177-FAPI-targeted radionuclide therapy after detecting high levels of fibroblast activating protein (FAP) in the metastatic sites, resulting in a significant clinical response.

Changes to sperm quality and decline in reproductive function have been reported in COVID-19-recovered males. Further, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants has caused the resurgences of COVID-19 cases globally during the last 2 years. These variants show increased infectivity and transmission along with immune escape mechanisms, which threaten the already burdened healthcare system.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research has pinpointed over 20 genes linked to Parkinson's disease (PD), yet most studies have concentrated on European populations, leaving a gap in understanding PD genetics in other regions, particularly South Asia.
  • The study recruited 674 PD patients, mostly under 50 years old, and 1,376 control subjects from India to investigate genetic risk factors, finding significant results in the SNCA region that aligns with European PD studies.
  • Notably, cases with specific gene mutations had lower overall genetic risk scores and the research identifies a link to the BSN gene, previously associated with neurodegenerative diseases, marking the largest genetic study of PD in South Asia and highlighting the need for further research in this area.

Purpose: To evaluate clinical outcomes of recurrent gynaecological cancers treated with reirradiation (reRT) using advanced brachytherapy (BT) technique.

Methods And Materials: Seventy-six women who underwent reRT with BT for gynaecological cancers at our institute between January 2000 and December 2019 were analysed to determine patient, disease and treatment characteristics and clinical outcomes. Descriptive analysis was used for demographics, and the Kaplan Meir method was used for survival analysis.

Background: There is no robust evidence-based data for ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABOiKT) from emerging countries.

Methods: Data from 1759 living donor ABOiKT and 33 157 ABO-compatible kidney transplantations (ABOcKT) performed in India between March 5, 2011, and July 2, 2022, were included in this retrospective, multicenter (n = 25) study. The primary outcomes included management protocols, mortality, graft loss, and biopsy-proven acute rejection (BPAR).

Improved detection and characterization of common focal liver lesions (FLL) are the main topics of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) guidelines on the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). On stateof-the-art CEUS imaging, to create a library of rare FLL, especially concerning their atypical imaging characteristics, might be helpful for improving clinical diagnostic efficiency. In this review, we aim to summarize the ultrasound and CEUS features of rare benign FLL.

Med Ultrason

June 2024

Department Allgemeine Innere Medizin, Kliniken Hirslanden, Beau Site, Salem und Permanence, Bern, Switzerland.

It is important to be familiar with the typical imaging features of the uncommon or even extremely rare focal liver lesions (FLL). Current guidelines of the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB) is aimed at assessing the usefulness of contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in the management of various FLL. In this review, we aim to summarize the ultrasound and CEUS characteristics with literature review of some extremely rare benign FLL, which might be helpful for improving diagnostic efficiency clinically.
