Objective: Decompression surgery is a mainstay of surgical treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). However, up to 30% of patients have low satisfaction due to residual symptoms. In the clinical setting, improvements in leg pain are more significant than those in leg numbness.

Objective: A minimum clinically important difference (MCID) has been increasingly well known in the current era of patient-centered care because it reflects a smallest change that is meaningful for patients following a clinical intervention. Previous studies suggested MCID values are disease and/or procedure dependent. No MCID values have been reported on the lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) following decompression surgery despite LSS is the most common spinal disease and the main treatment is decompression surgery.

Background: Trousseau's syndrome, also known as cancer-associated thrombosis, has several perioperative considerations, including the timing of surgery, anticoagulant therapy, and anesthetic technique. While appropriate anesthetic management is critical, few clinical reports have addressed the issue. Here, we report a patient with Trousseau's syndrome who successfully underwent gynecological surgery 1 month after a massive cerebral infarction.

Objective: Decompression surgery is the standard treatment for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS); however, despite the good clinical outcomes reported for this procedure, a relatively high dissatisfaction rate has been reported. We hypothesized that the previously used outcome measures do not accurately reflect patient satisfaction (PS). This study aimed to examine which outcome measures reflect PS accurately in patients undergoing decompression for LSS.

The serum concentration of thyrotropin (thyroid stimulating hormone, TSH) is drastically reduced by small increase in the levels of thyroid hormones (T3 and its prohormone, T4); however, the mechanism underlying this relationship is unknown. TSH consists of the chorionic gonadotropin α (CGA) and the β chain (TSHβ). The expression of both peptides is induced by the transcription factor GATA2, a determinant of the thyrotroph and gonadotroph differentiation in the pituitary.

Objectives: In patients who had undergone thyroidectomy in Japan for benign tumor, we determined whether thyroid lobe size correlates with temporary recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis (T-RLNP).
Methods: We retrospectively collected medical record data on usage of intraoperative neuromonitoring, laterality of thyroidectomy, amount of bleeding during surgery, duration of surgery, and whether the surgeon was a board certified otorhinolaryngologist as determined by the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan. Thyroid size was measured in preoperative axial computed tomography (CT) images.

Objective: Alcohol has been recognized as the main trigger for a cluster headache attack, but clinical features to distinguish between cluster headache in drinkers and nondrinkers are unclear. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the differences in clinical features of cluster headache between drinkers and nondrinkers.
Methods: This retrospective, observational study compared the clinical features of cluster headache between drinkers and nondrinkers among patients who were diagnosed with cluster headache between November 2004 and April 2018 at the Japanese Red Cross Shizuoka Hospital.

Decompression surgery is the standard treatment in lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). Recent studies have shown that patient satisfaction following decompression surgery does not correspond well with outcomes measured by conventional patient-reported outcome measurements. Recent study reported that the Japanese Orthopaedic Association Back Pain Evaluation Questionnaire (JOABPEQ) is the most accurate outcome measurement to reflect patient satisfaction.

Background: Intra-operative cell salvage is not routinely used during cesarean delivery because it is not cost-effective for patients at low risk of hemorrhage and there are theoretical concerns about amniotic fluid embolism. Some guidelines recommend using leukocyte depletion filters to decrease the risk of amniotic fluid embolism before re-infusing salvaged blood, but these filters are not available in Japan. We compared the efficacy and safety of leukocyte depletion and micro-aggregate filters in combination with intra-operative cell salvage during cesarean delivery.

Cefaly (Cefaly Technology, Seraing, Belgium) is a device that stimulates the bilateral supraorbital nerve transcutaneously. A previous study in Europe proved that Cefaly was an effective and safe device as a preventive therapy for migraine. However, there have been no studies on this device in Asia.

Background: The impact of a positive sagittal vertical axis (SVA) on the surgical outcome for lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) remains unclear, because sagittal imbalance in LSS may partly result from the tendency of patients to lean forward to reduce symptoms. Such an abnormality could be normalized by decompression surgery alone without corrective fusion. As this spontaneous correction is not well known, some surgeons perform only neural decompression in patients with positive SVA and decreased lumbar lordosis (LL), unless flatback-related symptoms are present, whereas other surgeons add corrective fusion to restore spinopelvic alignment.

Methods: VE was assessed according to a test-negative case-control design based on rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT) results. Children aged 6 months to 12 years with a fever ≥38 °C who had received an RIDT in outpatient clinics of 24 hospitals were enrolled for all five seasons since 2013/14.

Background Optimal maintenance therapy for lung squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has not been established. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of switch maintenance therapy with S-1, an oral fluoropyrimidine, after induction therapy with carboplatin and nanoparticle albumin-bound paclitaxel (nab-paclitaxel) in chemotherapy-naïve patients with advanced SCC. Methods Chemotherapy-naïve patients with advanced SCC received induction therapy with four cycles of carboplatin (at an area under the curve of 6, day 1 of a 28-day cycle) and nab-paclitaxel (100 mg/kg, days 1, 8, and 15).

Objective: Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) tend to bend forward to relieve neurological symptoms. They therefore have a positive sagittal vertical axis (SVA). The importance of the SVA value is well known in the field of adult spinal deformity; however, little is known about its impact on LSS.

Salivary duct carcinoma is a relatively rare salivary cancer, and most cases are androgen receptor -positive. Salivary duct carcinoma growth is suggested to be androgen dependent, which can reportedly be controlled by androgen deprivation therapy. However, the effectiveness and underlying molecular mechanisms of androgen deprivation therapy for salivary duct carcinoma remain unknown.

Switch maintenance therapy, using alternative agents that were not administered during induction chemotherapy, is a treatment option for advanced non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Bevacizumab is known to increase the efficacy of other chemotherapeutic agents; however, switch maintenance therapy with docetaxel and bevacizumab has not been adequately studied. The goal of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of switch maintenance therapy with docetaxel and bevacizumab following induction therapy with cisplatin, pemetrexed, and bevacizumab.

Background And Aim: This study aimed to elucidate whether interferon (IFN)-free direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy for hepatitis C after curative treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) promotes HCC recurrence in a real-world large-scale cohort.
Methods: This multicenter study was conducted by the Japanese Red Cross Hospital Liver Study Group. This retrospective study analyzed 516 patients who underwent antiviral treatment for hepatitis C with either IFN (n = 148) or IFN-free DAA (n = 368) after curative HCC treatment; 78 IFN-treated patients and 347 IFN-free DAA-treated patients achieved sustained virological response (SVR).
