Background: Baker's rhinitis is a kind of occupational allergic rhinitis mainly caused by intranasal exposure to wheat and/or rye flour in bakery workers. Continuous exposure to flour may induce the onset of asthma in these patients.

Method: We experienced a case of 34-year-old male with baker's rhinitis without asthma, and investigated responses of IgE and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to flour extracts used in the bakery in practice.

Background & Aims: Acute pancreatitis is a major adverse event of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Rectal administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) decreases the incidence of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP). Little is known about the combined effects of sublingual nitrate and NSAIDs.

Background And Aim: Although previous studies compared the efficacy of infliximab (IFX) versus adalimumab (ADA) as the first-line biologics for Crohn's disease (CD), the difference in long-term prognosis based on which biologic was used first has scarcely been reported. In particular, the clinical courses after loss of response (LOR) of the first-line biologics are largely unknown.

Methods: A multicenter, retrospective study was performed.

Although previous studies have investigated the influence of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) on lipid profiles and thyroid hormone levels, there is little evidence regarding the effects of levetiracetam (LEV). Therefore, we conducted a prospective longitudinal study to evaluate the effects of LEV and carbamazepine (CBZ) treatment on lipid profile and thyroid hormone levels in patients newly diagnosed with epilepsy. Inclusion criteria were as follows: (a) age between 4 and 15 years, (b) diagnosis of epilepsy with at least two focal seizures within a year, and (c) newly treated with LEV or CBZ monotherapy.

Ovarian stromal cells as a source of cancer-associated fibroblasts in human epithelial ovarian cancer: A histopathological study.

PLoS One

March 2019

Department of Pathology and Experimental Medicine, Graduate School of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, Okayama, Japan.

Fibroblasts are a major component of cancer tissue and known to contribute to cancer progression. However, it remains unknown whether they are derived from local fibroblasts or of other origin. This study was designed to identify the contribution of local stromal cells to cancer stroma in human epithelial ovarian cancer.

The efficacy and safety of lenalidomide (LEN) consolidation therapy and subsequent LEN maintenance therapy after high-dose therapy with autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (auto-PBSCT) were evaluated in patients with newly diagnosed symptomatic multiple myeloma (MM). Forty-one patients were enrolled and received high-dose dexamethasone (DEX) therapy as an initial induction. The patients who did not respond to the DEX therapy were further treated with four cycles of bortezomib plus DEX (BD) induction therapy.

Objectives: We previously reported that the use of a stapler to divide intersegmental planes did not decrease preserved pulmonary volume or function relative to electrocautery. However, preservation of pulmonary volume or function can be compromised when a stapler is used with larger intersegmental planes. Here, we assessed the correlations between preserved lung volume and pulmonary function after segmentectomy and the size of the intersegmental planes, based on the division method.

Article Synopsis
  • Asymmetric ventriculomegaly, commonly seen in very low birth weight infants on MRI, is linked to white matter injury, but no standard evaluation for ventricular size asymmetry exists.
  • In a study of 294 VLBWI, researchers developed a lateral ventricular index (LVI) to assess the discrepancy in ventricular sizes and explored its connection to walking ability at 18 months.
  • Results showed that a higher LVI was found in non-walking infants, with an LVI cutoff of 21.5 indicating a risk for walking disabilities, highlighting its potential role in predicting developmental outcomes.

Calcific myonecrosis is a rare soft tissue condition. The first case was reported in 1960, however, the precise pathophysiology of calcific myonecrosis remains unclear. The disease was thought to arise from compartment syndrome within a confined space resulting in necrosis and fibrosis, subsequent repeated intralesional hemorrhage, mass enlargement and calcification.

Objectives: We reviewed surgical results of canal wall-down tympanoplasty (CWDT) with soft posterior meatal wall reconstruction (SWR) for acquired cholesteatoma (AC), and identified factors associated with surgical outcomes.

Methods: Results from 119 ears with AC (pars flaccida, n = 99; pars tensa, n = 20) that underwent CWDT with SWR were retrospectively reviewed. We defined postoperative balloon-like retraction (PBR) with web formation, which needed reoperation to clean accumulated cerumen, as postoperative deep retraction pocket (PDRP).

Introduction: We conducted a randomized controlled study to compare the survival benefit of paclitaxel plus carboplatin and oral uracil-tegafur (UFT) as adjuvant chemotherapy in resected NSCLC.

Methods: In an open-label multicenter trial, patients with pathological stage IB to IIIA NSCLC were randomized into a group receiving paclitaxel (175 mg/m) plus carboplatin (area under the curve 5) every 3 weeks for four cycles (arm A) or a group receiving orally administered UFT (250 mg/m) daily for 2 years (arm B). The primary and secondary end points were overall survival and relapse-free survival and toxicity, respectively.

Aim: To evaluate the virologic responses and clinical course of daclatasvir plus asunaprevir treatment in non-hemodialysis (non-HD) and hemodialysis (HD) patients infected with genotype 1 hepatitis C virus (HCV).

Methods: A total of 1113 non-HD patients and 67 HD patients were assessed. To evaluate pretreatment factors contributing to sustained virological response at 12 weeks (SVR12), univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out.

Background: Salmonella spondylitis is an uncommon complication of Salmonella infection in immunocompetent children. To prevent treatment failure and neurological deficits, it needs prompt diagnosis and sufficient effort to identify the causative organism. There are some options to identify the causative organism such as Computed Tomography (CT) guided biopsy or surgical debridement, however when to perform these invasive interventions remains controversial.
