Japan has maintained measles elimination status since 2015. However, sporadic outbreaks of measles have been continuously reported. Here, we report a case of a measles-infected postpartum mother and infant in Japan.

Validity of claims-based algorithms for selected cancers in Japan: Results from the VALIDATE-J study.

Purpose: Real-world data from large administrative claims databases in Japan have recently become available, but limited evidence exists to support their validity. VALIDATE-J validated claims-based algorithms for selected cancers in Japan.

Methods: VALIDATE-J was a multicenter, cross-sectional, retrospective study.

Clonal evidence for the development of neuroblastoma with extensive copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity arising in a mature teratoma.

Mature teratomas are usually benign tumors that rarely undergo malignant transformation. We report an advanced neuroblastoma arising in a mature teratoma of the ovary. Whole-exome sequencing identified extensive copy-neutral loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in both neuroblastoma and teratoma elements, suggesting that the neuroblastoma evolved from the teratoma.

Effects of Sodium Glucose Co-Transporter 2 Inhibitors in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus on Body Composition and Glucose Variabilities: Single-Arm, Exploratory Trial.

Introduction: Sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are widely used in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus; they prevent cardiovascular events and reduce fat mass. However, little is known about the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on type 1 diabetes mellitus as an adjuvant to insulin therapy. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the effects of SGLT2 inhibitors on body composition of patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus and assess blood glucose variability.

Engineered exosomes delivering specific tumor-suppressive RNAi attenuate oral cancer progression.

Exosomes are involved in a wide range of biological processes in human cells. Considerable evidence suggests that engineered exosomes (eExosomes) containing therapeutic agents can attenuate the oncogenic activity of human cancer cells. Despite its biomedical relevance, no information has been available for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), and therefore the development of specific OSCC-targeting eExosomes (octExosomes) is urgently needed.

Randomized phase II study of tegafur-uracil/leucovorin versus tegafur-uracil/leucovorin plus oxaliplatin after curative resection of high-risk stage II/III colorectal cancer (SOAC-1101 trial).

Purpose: This randomized phase II trial compared tegafur-uracil/leucovorin (UFT/LV) plus oxaliplatin (TEGAFOX) to UFT/LV as adjuvant chemotherapy for patients with high-risk stage II/III colorectal cancer.

Methods: From 2010 to April 2015, 159 patients who underwent curative resection were randomly assigned to receive TEGAFOX (85 mg/m oxaliplatin on days 1 and 15, 300 mg/m/day UFT and 75 mg/day LV on days 1-28, every 35 days for five cycles) or UFT/LV. The primary study endpoint was disease-free survival.

A Favipiravir-induced Fever in a Patient with COVID-19.

We herein report the first case of a fever induced by favipiravir, a potential coronavirus disease 2019 therapeutic drug. An 82-year-old man diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia was transferred to our hospital following a positive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 polymerase chain reaction test. He was treated with compassionate use of favipiravir.

Neurosurgical versus endovascular treatment of spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas: a multicenter study of 195 patients.

Objective: The purpose of the present study was to compare the treatment success rates of primary neurosurgical and endovascular treatments in patients with spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs).

Methods: Data from 199 consecutive patients with thoracic and lumbosacral spinal dAVFs were collected from 18 centers. Angiographic and clinical findings, the rate of initial treatment failure or recurrence by procedures, risk factors for treatment failure, complications, and neurological outcomes were statistically analyzed.

The frozen elephant trunk technique for acute retrograde type A aortic dissection: preliminary results.

Objectives: Our goal was to determine the early and midterm outcomes after total arch replacement with the frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique compared to those of the conventional elephant trunk (ET) technique for acute retrograde type A aortic dissection.

Methods: Between 2012 and 2019, a total of 49 patients had total arch replacement for acute retrograde type A aortic dissection. Patients were divided into the conventional ET (n = 17) and FET (n = 32) groups.

Flexor tendon rupture is a major complication after volar locking plating for distal radius fracture (DRF). Few studies have investigated changes in the rate of postoperative flexor tendon rupture in patients with DRFs. The present study aimed to investigate the changes in the rate of postoperative flexor tendon rupture and to assess plate placement and reduction positions.

A Prospective, Randomized, Open-Label Trial of Early versus Late Favipiravir Therapy in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19.

Favipiravir is an oral broad-spectrum inhibitor of viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase that is approved for treatment of influenza in Japan. We conducted a prospective, randomized, open-label, multicenter trial of favipiravir for the treatment of COVID-19 at 25 hospitals across Japan. Eligible patients were adolescents and adults admitted with COVID-19 who were asymptomatic or mildly ill and had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) performance status of 0 or 1.

Acute Gouty Arthritis During Favipiravir Treatment for Coronavirus Disease 2019.

A 42-year-old man exhibiting hypoxia was diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019. He had medical histories of type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hyperuricemia, and gout attack. He received favipiravir for compassionate use for 14 days.

Clinical Outcomes of Ready-Made J-Shaped Nail Fixation for Unstable Metacarpal Fractures.

The purpose of this study was to report the clinical outcomes of ready-made J-shaped intramedullary nail fixation for unstable metacarpal fractures. A total of 25 unstable fractures from 24 patients were evaluated in this retrospective study, comprising 20 metacarpal neck and 5 metacarpal shaft fractures. The mean follow-up was 22 weeks.

Effects of ipragliflozin versus metformin in combination with sitagliptin on bone and muscle in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: Subanalysis of a prospective, randomized, controlled study (PRIME-V study).

Aims/introduction: Recent randomized clinical trials have suggested that sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors might reduce cardiovascular events and heart failure, and have renal protective effects. Despite these remarkable benefits, the effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors on bone and muscle are unclear.

Materials And Methods: A subanalysis of a randomized controlled study was carried out to evaluate the effects of the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, ipragliflozin, versus metformin on bone and muscle in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (baseline body mass index ≥22 kg/m and hemoglobin A1c 7-10%) who were already receiving sitagliptin.

Safety and Efficacy of Ranibizumab and Luseogliflozin Combination Therapy in Patients with Diabetic Macular Edema: Protocol for a Multicenter, Open-Label Randomized Controlled Trial.

Introduction: Diabetic macular edema (DME) threatens daily life activities such as reading and driving and reduces the patients' quality-of-life. Recently, anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents have become a first-line therapy in DME. However, therapy with anti-VEGF agents has several problems: repeated invasive injections are required; medical costs are high; and a certain proportion of patients with DME are resistant to treatment with anti-VEGF agents.

Microsurgical versus endovascular treatment of spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas with intradural venous drainage: a multicenter study of 81 patients.

Objective: Spinal arteriovenous shunts are rare vascular lesions and are classified into 4 types (types I-IV). Due to rapid advances in neuroimaging, spinal epidural AVFs (edAVFs), which are similar to type I spinal dural AVFs (dAVFs), have recently been increasingly reported. These 2 entities have several important differences that influence the treatment strategy selected.

Background: A growing body of evidence suggests that inflammatory response markers such as the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) are associated with outcomes of various malignancies. However, no study has reported the prognostic value of NLR and LMR in patients with distal bile duct cancer (DBDC) to date. We investigated the prognostic significance of these inflammatory markers in patients with DBDC who underwent radical resection.

Ventral Longitudinal Intraspinal Fluid Collection in Patients with Cervical Disc Herniation: A Report of Two Cases.

We encountered two cases of cervical disc herniation, wherein cerebrospinal fluid collection in the ventral epidural space between the cervical spine and the thoracic spine was noted. The patients, two women aged 71 and 43 years, were diagnosed with cervical disc herniation and underwent anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Unexpected cerebrospinal fluid leakage was observed prior to exposure of the dura mater.
