Article Synopsis
  • HBV reactivation poses a risk for patients undergoing treatment with anti-CD20 antibodies for lymphoma, and this study analyzed an ultra-high sensitivity HBsAg test to improve preemptive antiviral treatment in those with resolved HBV infections.
  • Among 252 patients, 22 experienced HBV reactivation, with the new assay identifying significantly more cases compared to the conventional method, particularly detecting precore mutants linked to higher reactivation rates.
  • Key findings indicated that low anti-HBs titer, detectable HBV DNA below quantification, and positive HBsAg results from the ultra-sensitive assay were strong independent risk factors for HBV reactivation, suggesting its utility in monitoring patients at risk.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the effectiveness of the urine mass screening (SUS) project in Japanese schools from 2012 to 2017, focusing on the transition from initial screenings to follow-up investigations.
  • Data analysis revealed that only a small percentage of students with identified urine abnormalities received further evaluations, with 5.9% of elementary and 23.6% of junior high students not pursuing additional investigations.
  • The findings suggest a need for improved processes within the SUS project to ensure that students get necessary follow-ups for abnormal urinalysis results, particularly to prevent potential kidney disease.

Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is one of the major factors that affect morbidity and mortality in kidney transplant (KTx) patients. The rate of CMV seropositivity in children before KTx is lower than that in adults; therefore, pediatric KTx patients have a higher risk of CMV infection. In Japanese pediatric KTx patients, preemptive therapy for CMV infection is a main conventional therapy.

Background: The renal function of the remaining kidney in living donors recovers up to 60~70% of pre-donation estimated-glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) by compensatory hypertrophy. However, the degree of this hypertrophy varies from donor to donor and the factors related to it are scarcely known.

Methods: We analyzed 103 living renal transplantations in our institution and divided them into two groups: compensatory hypertrophy group [optimal group, 1-year eGFR ≥60% of pre-donation, n = 63] and suboptimal compensatory hypertrophy group (suboptimal group, 1-year eGFR < 60% of pre-donation, n = 40).

Calculating the Tumor Nuclei Content for Comprehensive Cancer Panel Testing.

J Thorac Oncol

January 2020

Department of Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics, Aichi Cancer Center, Nagoya, Japan. Electronic address:

Comprehensive genetic panel testing generally requires that the analyzed tissues have a percent tumor nuclei (%TN) content of 20% or more to achieve assay performance comparable to the validated specifications. Pathologists play a crucial role in ensuring that the optimal results are achieved by accurately assigning %TN content of the available specimens and selecting the best material to submit for sequencing. This study addresses the issues in evaluating %TN, such as intraobserver variability, and examines whether focused training and feedback can improve pathologist performance.
