Increased water intake is recommended for kidney transplant recipients; however, its efficacy remains controversial. We hypothesized that pre-existing histological findings of the allograft might modulate the impact of water intake. We retrospectively analyzed 167 adults with living-donor kidney transplants (April 2011-May 2020; median observation period, 77 months) whose baseline biopsy data were available.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on Traveler's diarrhea (TD), a global health issue, by analyzing cases of TD in patients returning to Japan from abroad to identify the responsible organisms by travel region.
  • - Data was collected from 919 patients diagnosed with TD between 2017 and 2022, revealing that 20% had identifiable pathogens, mainly diarrheagenic bacteria, with the most common being Vibrio species (64%).
  • - A specific C-reactive protein level (2.2 mg/dL) was found to help predict bacterial TD, potentially helping to avoid unnecessary antibiotic use when stool samples aren't available.

Background: In recent years, the usefulness of androgen receptor axis-targeted agents (ARATs) such as abiraterone, enzalutamide, and apalutamide for the upfront treatment of metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) has been demonstrated. However, it remains unclear which patients would truly benefit from these treatments. Furthermore, intraductal carcinoma of the prostate (IDC-P) is a known poor prognostic factor in patients with prostate cancer.

Objective Asymptomatic renal immunoglobulin A (IgA) deposition occurs in healthy subjects, but its etiologic role in disease is unclear. Galactose-deficient IgA1 (Gd-IgA1) is involved in the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy. We investigated Gd-IgA1 deposition in transplanted kidneys that were considered healthy showing subclinical latent IgA deposition one hour after transplantation.

The safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetics of copanlisib were evaluated in this phase Ib/II study in Japanese patients with relapsed/refractory indolent non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). The primary endpoint was safety at the recommended dose; efficacy endpoints included objective response rate (ORR), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival. In phase Ib, patients received copanlisib 45 mg intravenously on days 1, 8, and 15 of a 28-day cycle, and when tolerated, consecutive patients received copanlisib 60 mg.

The advantages of neuroendoscopic surgery are the wide viewing angle and the freedom of an axis of view with minimal surgical trauma. With the advent of the exoscope, which has similar advantages to endoscopy, such as a small body and ergonomically superior heads-up surgery, it has become possible to add a field of view that is similar to that of microsurgery to endoscopic surgery. By taking advantage of the features of these scopes, we report the usefulness of the minimally invasive combined exoscopic and endoscopic two-step keyhole approach (EEKA) for various types of meningiomas.

Article Synopsis
  • Previous studies on serum albumin concentration's effect on proteinuria remission in minimal change disease (MCD) showed mixed results, prompting this study to investigate its impact in a large cohort of 108 adult patients in Japan.
  • The study found that 96.3% of patients achieved remission of proteinuria, with lower serum albumin levels and higher estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) linked to earlier remission.
  • However, serum albumin levels were not associated with the relapse of proteinuria, indicating that while albumin concentration plays a role in remission timing, it doesn't affect the likelihood of relapse in MCD.

Improvements in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence rate and survival have been frequently reported following virus eradication after hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC cure. However, the efficacy of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy in patients who included those with advanced HCC and decreased hepatic functional reserve is unknown. A comparative examination was retrospectively conducted of 141 patients with hepatitis C who started DAA therapy within 1 year after undergoing curative HCC treatment and showed a sustained viral response (SVR) and 327 patients who underwent curative treatment for HCV-related HCC and did not subsequently receive antiviral therapy.
