Background & Objectives: It is well known that cognitive impairment in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is characterized by executive dysfunction, rather than memory dysfunction, although the precise mechanism of this remains to be elucidated. The purpose of the present study is to examine the correlation between gray matter volume (GMV) and executive function in CKD patients.
Design, Setting, Participants, Measurements: This cross-sectional study recruited 95 patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD (NDD-CKD) with no history of cerebrovascular disease, who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Trail Making Test (TMT) in the VCOHP Study.

Background: The impact of renin-angiotensin system blockade (RASB) on the incidence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) remains unclear in IgA nephropathy (IgAN).
Methods: This study assessed associations between RASB treatment and the incidence of ESRD in IgAN using propensity score approaches. We retrospectively analyzed 1273 patients with IgAN biopsied between 1979 and 2010.

At SPring-8, synchrotron radiation-based X-ray phase-contrast tomography (PCXI) has been developed to measure the inner structures of biological soft tissue without destroying them. To resolve the three-dimensional (3D) morphology, we have applied PCXI to various cardiovascular tissue samples, including the thoracic aorta, ductus arteriosus, and cardiac conduction system. In the aortic walls, PCXI demonstrated differences in 3D structures of tunica media of aortic dissection.

We have reported relatively poor outcomes after sirolimus-eluting stent implantation in the OUCH study.
Methods: The OUCH-TL study is a prospective, non-randomized, single-arm registry designed to assess the results of paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) in HD patients with follow-up quantitative coronary angiography analysis.

Background: Bone contouring is currently the best treatment for fibro-osseous lesions after bone growth arrest. Navigation systems available for this surgery allow intra-operative visualisation with improved cosmetic outcomes. However, conventional navigation systems using superficial skin registration cannot prevent subtle discrepancies.

Background: Good outcomes have been reported regarding the use of cochlear implants for mumps deafness. The mumps virus induces meningitis and/or encephalitis, which can cause central nervous system damage resulting in retrolabyrinthine hearing loss, for which a cochlear implant would be less effective.
Cases: We installed a cochlear implant in two patients with bilateral mumps deafness; one achieved a good result with the cochlear implant, but the other did not.

Background: Telaprevir (TVR) plays a major role in renal damage and anemia associated with TVR/pegylated interferon/ribavirin therapy for chronic hepatitis C. Adjusting the TVR starting dose may reduce these adverse effects. We aimed to determine whether adjusting the starting dose according to renal function reduces TVR-associated renal damage and anemia and affects the sustained virological response (SVR).

Calcitriol, a non-selective vitamin D receptor agonist (VDRA) that suppresses iPTH is used for SHPT treatment, but its use is frequently complicated by hypercalcemia. Paricalcitol, a selective VDRA, demonstrated efficacy in iPTH suppression compared to maxacalcitol in a Phase 2 study (M11-609) in Japanese subjects.

Aim: To investigate the prognosis and to clarify the predictors of both patient and limb survival among hemodialysis (HD) patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) due to isolated below-the-knee (BK) disease.
Methods: An observational cohort study, analyzing a total of 546 HD patients with 681 limbs who underwent endovascular treatment (EVT) for CLI with isolated BK disease at 11 hospitals in Japan between March 2004 and June 2011, was performed.
Results: The mean patient age was 69.

Aim: Some patients develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) during nucleoside/nucleotide analog (NA) therapy even if alanine aminotransferase (ALT) or hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA levels are sufficiently reduced. The aim of this study is to identify the risk factors of development of HCC during NA therapy.
Methods: Six hundred and two patients were analyzed who were continuously receiving NA for chronic HBV infection.

Background: Brain atrophy has been reported in patients with end-stage renal disease receiving hemodialysis, although its mechanism is unknown. However, little is known regarding brain atrophy in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD). Therefore, we examined brain volume and its annual change over 2 years in PD patients compared with patients with non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (NDD-CKD).

It is unknown whether the use of diuretics is optimal over other antihypertensive agents in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) whose blood pressure remains uncontrolled despite treatment with renin-angiotensin system (RAS) inhibitors. In this study, we assessed the additive effects of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) on reducing proteinuria in CKD patients under treatment with losartan (LS). We conducted a multicenter, open-labeled, randomized trial.

Object: This study described clinicopathological characteristics of pseudo-occlusion (PO) of the internal carotid artery (ICA) with regards to the pathological mechanism and the benefit of carotid endarterectomy (CEA).
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 17 PO patients who underwent CEA. Clinical presentation, angiographic findings, surgical outcomes and plaque components obtained from CEA were investigated.

Objectives: To investigate the relationship between triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TG/HDL-C) and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Methods: We used data from 216,007 Japanese adults who participated in a nationwide health checkup program. Men (n = 88,516) and women (n = 127,491) were grouped into quartiles based on their TG/HDL-C levels (<1.

Background And Objectives: The risk assessment for developing ESRD remains limited in patients with IgA nephropathy (IgAN). The aim of this study was to develop and validate a prediction rule for estimating the individual risk of ESRD in patients with IgAN.
Design, Setting, Participants, & Measurements: A total of 698 patients with IgAN diagnosed by renal biopsy at Kyushu University Hospital (derivation cohort) between 1982 and 2010 were retrospectively followed.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate risk factors for re-recurrent carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in long-term renal hemodialysis (HD) patients. Fifteen wrists of ten HD patients, follow-up period of minimum seven years after reoperation of CTS, were included in this study. Duration of HD, period from first operation to reoperation, shunt side was involved or not, presence of trigger finger and cervical destructive spondyloarthritis, and operative procedure performed during the reoperation (synovectomy was performed or not) were evaluated.

Aim: This prospective study was designed to examine whether consumption of a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA)-enriched nutrient mixture as a late-evening snack (LES) helps maintain and/or improve liver functioning in liver cirrhosis (LC) patients who have undergone radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Methods: An equal number (10) of 30 LC patients who had undergone RFA for HCC was randomly assigned to a standard diet group (control) group, a morning BCAA (M-BCAA) administration group, or a LES with BCAA (LES-BCAA) administration group. Liver function testing was performed and Child-Pugh scores (CPS) calculated for each group to assess the improvement at 1, 4 and 12 weeks post-RFA.

We report a case of a 35-year-old female with herpetic meningoencephalitis confirmed by polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical study for herpes simplex virus-1 accompanied with a massive intracerebral hematoma as a complication. A hematoma localized at the medial temporal lobe and the medial frontal lobe occurred on the 11th day after initiation of acyclovir treatment. She subsequently required emergency surgery for temporal lobectomy, as well as hematoma and external decompression.
