The pedicle screw (PS) is widely used for spinal fixation surgery. However, PS malpositioning can cause critical complications; thus, the accuracy of ascertaining PS trajectory is paramount. This study aimed to demonstrate the accuracy and safety of a simple and cost-effective PS placement technique using a human internal reference frame for angle estimation.

Little is known regarding the postprocedural management of coronary artery perforation (CAP). The characteristics, outcomes, and management of 115 CAP cases among 13,453 patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) between 2001 and 2017 at Miyazaki Medical Association Hospital were analyzed retrospectively. The incidence of CAP was 0.

Background: The association between microscopic hematuria (MH) and albuminuria in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) caused by diabetes and hypertension remains unclear.
Methods: The Fukuoka Kidney disease Registry Study is a Japanese multicenter prospective cohort study of 4476 patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD. In this cohort, we conducted a cross-sectional study in 994 patients with diabetic nephropathy and hypertensive nephrosclerosis.

Background: Constipation is a common complication in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is involved in the pathogenesis of dysbiosis and progression of CKD. However, little is known about its association with disorders of the bone-cardiovascular axis in patients with CKD.
Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 3878 patients with CKD using the baseline dataset of the Fukuoka Kidney disease Registry study, as a multicenter, prospective cohort study of pre-dialysis CKD patients.

Objective: Radium-223 (Ra-223) dichloride is the bone-targeted radioligand therapy that prolongs overall survival (OS) in patients with bone-metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). We aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of this treatment in real-world practice.
Methods: We included Japanese men treated with Ra-223 for bone-metastatic CRPC from 10 institutions, retrospectively.

Background And Objective: The objective of this case report was to identify a second-hit gene that may promote Moyamoya disease (MMD)-like vascular formation in an individual having the p.R4810K variant.
Methods: We performed magnetic resonance imaging and genetic analyses of and in a 21-year-old woman, who showed Ehlers-Danlos-like symptoms and developed a first-ever unprovoked seizure, and of her healthy parents.

Background: To analyse the subsequent clinical course of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who either continued or discontinued biologic agents after hospitalization for infections.
Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 230 RA patients with 307 hospitalizations for infections under biologic therapy between September 2008 and May 2014 in 15 institutions for up to 18 months after discharge. The risks of RA flares and subsequent hospitalizations for infections from 61 days to 18 months after discharge were evaluated.

Introduction: The Halabi model predicts the overall survival (OS) of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with second-line therapy after docetaxel. We aimed to validate this model externally with an independent cohort, outside the setting of a clinical trial.
Methods: In a multi-institutional study, we included 66 patients treated with cabazitaxel after docetaxel for mCRPC.

Background: The Japanese operative-rating scale for laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (JORS-LDG) was developed through cognitive task analysis together with the Delphi method to measure intraoperative performance during laparoscopic distal gastrectomy. This study aimed to investigate the value of this rating scale as an educational tool and a surgical outcome predictor in laparoscopic distal gastrectomy.
Methods: The surgical performance of laparoscopic distal gastrectomy was assessed by the first assistant, through self-evaluation in the operating room and by video raters blind to the case.

Improvements in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence rate and survival have been frequently reported following virus eradication after hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC cure. However, the efficacy of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy in patients who included those with advanced HCC and decreased hepatic functional reserve is unknown. A comparative examination was retrospectively conducted of 141 patients with hepatitis C who started DAA therapy within 1 year after undergoing curative HCC treatment and showed a sustained viral response (SVR) and 327 patients who underwent curative treatment for HCV-related HCC and did not subsequently receive antiviral therapy.

Background: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is an established ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation (AF), however, PVI alone is insufficient to suppress AF recurrence. Non-pulmonary vein (non-PV) trigger ablation is one of the promising strategies beyond PVI and has been shown to be effective in refractory/persistent AF cases. To make non-PV trigger ablation more standardized, it is essential to develop a simple method to localize the origin of non-PV triggers.

Background: Returning to work is a serious issue that affects patients who are discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU). This study aimed to clarify the employment status and the perceived household financial status of ICU patients 12 months following ICU discharge. Additionally, we evaluated whether there exists an association between depressive symptoms and subsequent unemployment status.

Introduction: Ectopic beats originating from the pulmonary vein (PV) trigger atrial fibrillation (AF). The purpose of this study was to clarify the electrophysiological determinant of AF initiation from the PVs.
Methods: Pacing studies were performed with a single extra stimulus mimicking an ectopic beat in the left superior PVs (LSPVs) in 62 patients undergoing AF ablation.

We report the case of a 71-year-old man who was experiencing a gradually worsening, dull pain and a cold sensation in his right hand. Three months earlier, he underwent a percutaneous coronary intervention for angina pectoris using a transradial approach in his right wrist and developed an arteriovenous fistula (AVF), a complication of percutaneous coronary intervention. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a pseudoaneurysm and an AVF that were reducing the blood flow in his right hand.

Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is commonly diagnosed in cases where multiple hyperechoic nodules are observed in the liver. Pathologically, these nodules associated with PCT are focal fatty deposits. We report here, seven cases of PCT with fatty changes over multiple foci in the liver.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with the exacerbation of heart failure (HF). Although AF ablation has become an established treatment for patients with HF, it is usually an elective procedure. Here, we present a case of acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) exacerbated by refractory AF, which was successfully treated with emergent AF ablation.

However, the role of lung UA in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) remains uncertain. We hypothesized that increased lung UA level contributes to the progression of PAH.

Although both cinacalcet and etelcalcetide are calcimimetics that directly inhibit parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion by activating the calcium (Ca)-sensing receptor (CaSR), their binding sites are different. We report a first case of a hemodialysis (HD) patient with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), in whom cinacalcet, but not etelcalcetide, could reduce serum intact PTH (i-PTH) levels. A HD patient received total parathyroidectomy (PTx) with auto-transplantation 16 years earlier.

The causal effects of vaccines on Kawasaki disease (KD) remain elusive. We aimed to examine the association between vaccines administered during infancy and the development of KD in Japan. We conducted a multicenter prospective case-control study using questionnaires and compared the vaccination status of infants (age: 6 weeks to 9 months) who developed KD (KD group; = 102) and those who did not develop KD (non-KD group; = 139).
