Article Synopsis
  • - The study reports on rare cases of biallelic deletions in the ATPase family AAA-domain containing protein 3A (ATAD3A) gene, which can lead to infantile lethality characterized by conditions like pontocerebellar hypoplasia (PCH) and spinal cord hypoplasia.
  • - Genetic analysis through whole-genome sequencing revealed that these deletions resulted in severe malformations and a significant frameshift, suggesting they likely create a nonfunctional protein (null allele).
  • - Pathological findings in affected infants showed extensive damage to the spinal cord's gray and white matter, indicating that biallelic deletions in the ATAD3A gene should be considered when diagnosing mitochondrial diseases that

Improvements in the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) recurrence rate and survival have been frequently reported following virus eradication after hepatitis C virus (HCV)-related HCC cure. However, the efficacy of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy in patients who included those with advanced HCC and decreased hepatic functional reserve is unknown. A comparative examination was retrospectively conducted of 141 patients with hepatitis C who started DAA therapy within 1 year after undergoing curative HCC treatment and showed a sustained viral response (SVR) and 327 patients who underwent curative treatment for HCV-related HCC and did not subsequently receive antiviral therapy.

Background: Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is an established ablation procedure for atrial fibrillation (AF), however, PVI alone is insufficient to suppress AF recurrence. Non-pulmonary vein (non-PV) trigger ablation is one of the promising strategies beyond PVI and has been shown to be effective in refractory/persistent AF cases. To make non-PV trigger ablation more standardized, it is essential to develop a simple method to localize the origin of non-PV triggers.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to determine how well severity classification predicts outcomes in patients with adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) during initial treatment.
  • - Researchers categorized AOSD patients into mild, moderate, and severe groups and compared clinical features, finding that severe cases had more complications and lower rates of drug-free remission.
  • - Although survival rates were similar across groups, four of the five fatalities occurred in the severe category, suggesting that severity classification can be helpful for predicting AOSD outcomes.

Although both cinacalcet and etelcalcetide are calcimimetics that directly inhibit parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion by activating the calcium (Ca)-sensing receptor (CaSR), their binding sites are different. We report a first case of a hemodialysis (HD) patient with secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), in whom cinacalcet, but not etelcalcetide, could reduce serum intact PTH (i-PTH) levels. A HD patient received total parathyroidectomy (PTx) with auto-transplantation 16 years earlier.

  • A study examined osteoporosis medication usage in 497 patients over 60 years with fragility hip fractures (FHF), revealing that only 25.5% maintained continuous medication for three years, while 44.1% received no treatment.
  • It was found that a low Barthel index at discharge was a significant risk factor for both not starting treatment and not remaining on medication.
  • The findings suggest addressing the issues around low Barthel index could improve treatment persistence and overall outcomes for patients at risk of osteoporosis-related fractures.
