Which biomarkers predict hard-to-heal diabetic foot ulcers? A scoping review.

Drug Discov Ther

January 2024

Department of Gerontological Nursing/Wound Care Management, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) often develop into hard-to-heal wounds due to complex factors. Several biomarkers capable of identifying those at risk of delayed wound healing have been reported. Controlling or targeting these biomarkers could prevent the progression of DFUs into hard-to-heal wounds.

  • - This study examined the occurrence and importance of non-invasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features (NIFTP) in Japan by analyzing 4008 thyroid nodules from various institutions before the term "NIFTP" was introduced.
  • - Findings revealed that 80.8% of the nodules diagnosed as non-invasive encapsulated follicular variant of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and 31.0% of follicular thyroid adenomas (FTA) were considered NIFTPs, with a low overall prevalence of 2.3% across the institutions.
  • - The research indicated that NIFTPs are more frequent in FTAs than in PTCs, and cases with nuclear score

Article Synopsis
  • Emphysematous cystitis is a rare urinary tract infection that results in gas build-up in the bladder, and it can sometimes occur alongside pneumoperitoneum, raising concerns about potential bladder or intestinal perforation.
  • A case involving a 90-year-old woman with this condition was successfully treated conservatively with antibiotics and catheter placement, avoiding surgery due to her high surgical risk.
  • A literature review noted that despite uncertainties about bladder perforations based on imaging and physical signs, a significant number of patients with emphysematous cystitis and pneumoperitoneum can be safely managed without surgery.

This systematic review was performed to investigate the superiority of proton beam therapy (PBT) to photon-based radiotherapy (RT) in treating esophageal cancer patients, especially those with poor cardiopulmonary function. The MEDLINE (PubMed) and ICHUSHI (Japana Centra Revuo Medicina) databases were searched from January 2000 to August 2020 for studies evaluating one end point at least as follows; overall survival, progression-free survival, grade ≥ 3 cardiopulmonary toxicities, dose-volume histograms, or lymphopenia or absolute lymphocyte counts (ALCs) in esophageal cancer patients treated with PBT or photon-based RT. Of 286 selected studies, 23 including 1 randomized control study, 2 propensity matched analyses, and 20 cohort studies were eligible for qualitative review.

Eating alone and poor dental status have been reported to influence dietary intake in older adults. First, we compared nutrient and food intake and dental markers between women eating alone and together, who participated in a home health management program conducted by Kanazawa Medical University. The results showed the significantly higher intake of fresh fruit and some micro-nutrients and a lower decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index (better dental status) in women eating alone after adjusting for age, suggesting that dental status may mediate the association between commensality and dietary intake.

Introduction: Simplified, but effective, hyperphosphatemia treatments with novel mechanisms of action, tolerable safety profiles, and low pill burden are needed for patients undergoing hemodialysis. Tenapanor is a calcium (Ca)-free, nonmetal, nonpolymeric drug that reduces phosphate absorption by selectively inhibiting intestinal sodium-hydrogen exchanger 3. As the serum phosphorus (P) level-lowering effect of tenapanor has not been evaluated in Japanese patients with hyperphosphatemia undergoing hemodialysis, we evaluated its efficacy and safety in this population.

Objective Japan's shortage in labor force due to a declining birth rate and aging population has led to the rapid development of various systems and work environments to promote the employment of older adults. With increasing expectations for the active participation of older adults in the labor market, it is necessary to clarify the relationship between work and physical and mental health in this population, as well as the challenges they face. In particular, self-rated health is an important health indicator that captures the overall health status of older adults, which is strongly related to the decline in life functions and the increase in healthy life expectancy.
