In the past decade, signature clinical neuropathology of blast-induced traumatic brain injury has been under intense debate, but interface astroglial scarring (IAS) seems to be convincing. In this study, we examined whether IAS could be replicated in the rat brain exposed to a laser-induced shock wave(s) (LISW[s]), a tool that can produce a pure shock wave (primary mechanism) without dynamic pressure (tertiary mechanism). Under certain conditions, we observed astroglial scarring in the subpial glial plate (SGP), gray-white matter junctions (GM-WM), ventricular wall (VW), and regions surrounding cortical blood vessels, accurately reproducing clinical IAS.

Objective: An enterohaemorrhagic (EHEC) outbreak at an institute with multiple facilities for children and adults with intellectual disabilities was investigated to characterize the cases and identify risk factors for infection.
Methods: A case was defined as a resident, a staff member or a visitor at the institute from 16 May through 30 June 2005 testing positive for type 2 Vero toxin-producing EHEC O157:H7 (confirmed case) or exhibiting bloody diarrhoea for two or more days (probable case). We collected and analysed demographic, clinical, laboratory and individual behaviour data to identify possible risk factors for infection and infection routes.

We sought to evaluate clinical outcomes and toxicities of radiation therapy (RT) alone compared to RT with concurrent chemotherapy (CCT) for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) treatment. We conducted a retrospective review of consecutive patients with biopsy-proven nonmetastatic NPC who underwent RT at our institution. From May 2001 to April 2015; 62 newly diagnosed NPC patients were treated with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D-CRT) or intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with or without CCT.

The purpose of this study was to investigate an association between the prognosis for oro-hypopharynx squamous cell carcinoma treated with radiation therapy and the pre-therapeutic level of C-reactive protein (CRP). Patient with oro-hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma who underwent definitive radiotherapy in our institution from January 2002 to August 2016 were enrolled. The patient were divided into elevated CRP (over 0.

Fatigue reduces productivity and is a risk factor for lifestyle diseases and mental disorders. Everyone experiences physiological fatigue and recovers with rest. Pathological fatigue, however, greatly reduces quality of life and requires therapeutic interventions.

A 43-year-old female was referred to our hospital for sudden onset of abdominal pain, fullness, and vomiting. Physical examination revealed abdominal distension with mild epigastric tenderness. Abdominal radiography showed massive gastric distension and plain computed tomography (CT) a markedly enlarged stomach filled with gas and fluid.

Decreased concentrations of plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and serum BDNF have been proposed to be a state marker of depression and a biological indicator of loaded psychosocial stress. Stress evaluations of participants in military mission are critically important and appropriate objective biological parameters that evaluate stress are needed. In military circumstances, there are several problems to adopt plasma BDNF concentration as a stress biomarker.

Background: Although the number of advanced lung cancer patients on hemodialysis is expected to increase in the future, there has been no established treatment regimen yet. We report our experience with gemcitabine safely administered to an elderly patient requiring hemodialysis who had advanced lung adenocarcinoma.
Case: A 87-year-old man had been on dialysis for chronic renal failure.

With the increase in terrorist activity in recent times, the number of blast injuries has also increased in civilian and military settings. In a recent war, the number of patients who suffered blast traumatic brain injury (bTBI) increased, so treatment of bTBI is currently a very important issue. Blast injury is complicated and can be divided into 4 categories: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary.

A 59-year-old asymptomatic man was incidentally found to have a periaortic mass and an elevated serum amylase level during his medical check-up. Additional findings, such as infiltration of immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-producing plasma cells in the mass lesion, elevation of serum IgG4 (1000 mg/dl), and pancreatic duct narrowing as evidenced on a magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography scan, confirmed the diagnosis as retroperitoneal fibrosis complicated with autoimmune pancreatitis. The patient responded favorably to steroid treatment before the appearance of symptoms.

Chest wall tumors are uncommon, but intercostal hemangioma is even more so: There have been only a handful of reports on it to date. We report on a 32-year-old man with a left-side chest wall mass detected on a chest roentgenogram and computed tomography scans. The tumor was completely resected by means of video-assisted thoracic surgery.

Angiosarcoma, a malignant tumor of vascular endothelial cell origin, is a lethal disease for which complete cure is rarely seen. The objective of this study was to determine the efficiency of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a new treatment for angiosarcoma. PDT (630 nm, 25 J/cm2) using Photofrin for a mouse angiosarcoma cell line of human origin (ISOS-1) showed that the rate of cell death increased with increase in the concentration of a photosensitizer (LD50: approximately 2 microg/ml).

A 61-year-old man was pointed out a small peripheral lung nodule and mediastinal lymph node swelling on the chest computed tomography (CT). At the operation, it was diagnosed squamous cell carcinoma and right upper lobectomy and nodal dissection were done. The tumor was 9 mm in size and diagnosed as well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma with metastasis to mediastinal lymph nodes.

Using CT perfusion studies we evaluated changes in the cerebral circulation before and after the intravenous administration of fasudil 60 mg in 8 patients 7 to 14 days after a subarachnoid hemorrhage. The mean duration to the peak of the time-density curve and the average peak value did not change. In areas with cerebral blood perfusion (CBP) less than 40 ml/100 g/min, the CBP increased from 34.

Chronic infectious diseases may increase the risk of stroke. We investigated whether periodontal disease was a risk factor for cerebral ischemia. A case-control study with 444 stroke patients, 194 hemorrhagic patients and 250 ischemic patients, and 164 hospital controls with nonvascular and noninflammatory neurological diseases, was performed.

A standard treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma with extrahepatic metastasis is not established and chemotherapy is ineffective. We experienced a case of hepatocellular carcinoma with bone metastasis that responded to concurrent TS-1/low-dose cisplatin (CDDP) therapy and radiotherapy. A 58-year-old male patient with left iliac bone metastasis after 2 hepatectomies was admitted to our hospital.

A 42-year-old female with descending colon carcinoma and synchronous unresectable multiple liver metastases underwent left hemicolectomy in September 2001. She was treated with chemotherapy centering on hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) following implantation of a reservoir in the outpatient setting.
